I will certainly take photos to document the fact that the paintwork was due to minor issues for the next owner of the car.

Got me thinking if.......if I ever had to replace the rear bumper cover on my C4S, I would look into what it would take to mimic that look.

I wish I would of used a flex agent in my front bumper paint.

A body/paint shop that can do this full paint job will have a Standox paint system and use Standox paint.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's nothing major, but it still pisses me off. No note was left. It was hit on the back bumper, between the bumperettes and the reflector strip. It is pushed in about 1/2 an inch to an inch, and the paint has cracked like a spider web radiating out from the point of impact. The bumper cover will need to be repainted, and possibly replaced. We've been staying at a hotel for the past week as we are moving, and between houses. The C4S is already on a truck bound for Colorado. I'm guessing this happened at the hotel parking lot.
I was thinking about having some paint work done on the front to remove the multiple stone chips that are on the car. I guess now I'll just have the entire car repainted... at least they won't have to try to match or blend the paint.
I'm thinking that this would be an opportunity to replace the front and rear bumper covers if I wanted a more aggressive look, but I'm still leaning towards staying with the stock look and just getting it fixed and painted.
It will all be fine in the end, but I still think people suck.
I hear ya bud. Same thing happened to me in the parking lot of one of my stores. They hit the side of the rear bumper cover, it seems like they were either going in or coming out & angled their car too much & it scraped the side, dent it a little, & cracked the paint as well. No note either... Ya, people do suck.
On a more positive note... I would go with a Euro rear bumper cover while you're at it, & GT2 front end. Would look sweet.
I've thought about the GT2 front end. I'm not really into rear spoilers, and I have wondered if the GT2 front bumper cover would look "unbalanced" without a rear spoiler.
What's the Euro cover - is it the one without the bumperettes?
I would prefer OEM parts - would these be difficult to get if I wanted to go that way?
Thanks. It will probably be about a month before I can get anything done with our move underway. This gives me a little time to decide exactly what to do, and to find the right shop in the Denver area to do the repairs.
Dennis, sorry to hear the bad news.
Think carefully about having the entire car repainted. Repainting the front and rear bumpers are one thing, but an entire re-paint could kill any potential resale value. Take pics of the damage to the rear and the chips on the front prior to painting. Proof that the repaint was done to repair small hit and for cosmetic reasons.
Dennis - sorry to hear of your unfortunate incident. Take the time during your move to evaluate bumper alternatives- maybe a new look will come out of it? My wife's S8 got hit this week in a Starbucks lot - just door dings, but still - some people have no respect for others.
Bummer Dennis. What happened to responsible people, just what you need on top of a major move. Tim's advice is on the $, but whatever you decide will fix the current problem.
Thanks Tim. I will certainly take photos to document the fact that the paintwork was due to minor issues for the next owner of the car. That being said, I'm not really worried about resale value. This is a daily driver, not a concourse car.
As you may recall I bought this car in California from a guy who also used it as a DD. The great thing about a Cali car is no salt, and no rust. The disadvantage is that the dry air and the proximity to the beach and sand have literally sand blasted the front of my car. I recently had a quote for paintwork to remove the chips, and it included the nose, the hood, both fenders, the mirrors and the leading edge of the roof. It also required paint on the rear fender flares, in front of the back wheels. So, this car already needs fairly significant paintwork. Adding the back bumper to it makes the case for a total repaint to me. No attempts to color match or blend, just a fresh coat of Midnight Blue Metallic.
I came up on a 997 GT3 the other day on the interstate. I really liked the center exhaust on it. Got me thinking if.......if I ever had to replace the rear bumper cover on my C4S, I would look into what it would take to mimic that look. Just sayin'
Yeah, people suck.
I detailed my car yesterday. How in the hell could I get little door chips (very little, but) when the car sat in a garage most of the winter and it was always parked way away. It is funny to me, that I know EVERY LITTLE flaw in that car.
Be careful with the whole car repaint idea. Just the repaint on my front bumper cover is a perfect rematch of Arctic Silver in full sun or shade and the metallic particle density looks good as well, but the paint is too hard and not resiliant enough. It chips like crazy from small rocks and such. More chips in 4 k miles than in the previous 45k.
Even the best looking job when just done can deteriorate rapidly to the point of having a mess on your hands. I'd keep a well aged original paint job over an excellent quality repaint any day. I work with painters often in my business and have for decades.
FYI, it's worth the extra few hundred dollars to get anti-chip agents added to your clearcoat. It makes the clear flexible and rubberlike, hence resistant to damage. Most quality body shops are aware of this additive, but only use it on bumpers. Just ask them to spray it on the entire car.
That's terrible... as others have said - that's one of the reasons I hate to take my car anywhere.... I was at the airport last week and saw three 911s and thought to myself that the owners were braver than me for leaving their cars there. I hate taking my car anywhere where there's a chance that the parking lot will be crowded.
Too bad about the hit. No matter where I park my Porche how far away from the door when I come out there's at least one car next to it.
My Boxster has several door dings in its flanks from people opening their car's door into my car. I hope there's a particularly hot corner in Hell for these people.
I'd advise against a full repaint. If you can find a shop to do a good job on a full respray the shop can certainly do a partial respray on one or two panels and match/blend the paint so you won't be able to see the differences.
A full respray a big job to do right. Those panels that can be removed are removed, straightened, prepped, sanded, painted and finished. Those that can't be removed the weather stripping is removed or tied back and the panels are straightended, prepped, sanded, painted, then finished.
A good shop will then block sand (using a very fine sanding paper) the paint down to get the new paint thickness close to the factory paint thickness.
A lot of work. Expensive. A lot of places to screw up. Many shops will claim to be able to do a good job cause the money's good but only a few, maybe one can do you the kind of job you want.
A body/paint shop that can do this full paint job will have a Standox paint system and use Standox paint. This is the paint and paint system the factory uses. Porsche also recognizes Spies-Hecker and Glasurit paints and paint systems.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Take a look at Stuttgart Auto Body in Englewood, Colorado. I have no affiliation with them, but they've done excellent work on my Audis and I wouldn't hesitate to bring my 996 to them.
Dennis
If you need a shop recommendation let me know. I am going with a rear spoiler on mine. Highcard had a front and no rear done for a while. Search his posts.
See you soon I hope!
Dennis, sorry to hear about the "accident". Its amazing how this often these things occur. I just went through the same process with my DD and decided against the full respray for a lot of the comments mentioned. To do it right, is usually very costly...
Whatever you decide, good luck and I hope it works out like you want it!
Sorry to hear Dennis.
As others have said, you don't need to repaint the entire car. I'm confident the respray will match exactly like the rest of the car. Twice I was rear-ended in the 996 and another time I drug the front bumper over a curb ripping the bottom part about a foot.
All three times the paint matched the original.
I wish I would of used a flex agent in my front bumper paint. It chipped a lot after my dad resprayed. Sum bitch guy selling the paint claimed it wasn't needed.
BS, they do.
Dennis - it's all been said, but the less paintwork the better. Given the fact that a number of panels have to be done, it probably makes sense to have the whole car done. But, don't do it on the cheap. If you're going to do it, take it to a high end shop and have it done right. Good luck and sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Tim, you can bring your Honda up here - my kid will ram yours with his 2001 A4. Then you'll both be happy.
Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions. I appreciate it. I won't see the car again until it arrives in Evergreen on May 12th. This gives me a little time to consider my options. I don't have a real preference when comparing a full respray to matching and blending. I just want the car to look as close as possible to original. I definitely won't cheap it up. I'll keep you posted as things progress.
Meanwhile, I'll be driving the Cayenne which is generally parked by my wife with wreckless abandon, and is totally flawless!
Thanks again!
Dennis - since you'll be driving your P-car in CO, you might want to consider adding a clear bra to the front end of the car to protect against stone chips - they sand and rock the roads heavily here and it will just be a matter of time. I've also added the protectant to my headlights to minimize road rash.
