Suggestion

I don't know why Porsche used screw to protect the threads when a simple plastic plug would have done the job.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone have a roof rack for a 996 collecting dust? Would like to find one to throw bike/kayak on top of from time to time.

POST 2Original post

Dang, I got all excited hoping for a variant ont the "hood dent" thread

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

?? Not familiar with that thread.

POST 4Original post

Sorry, my bad. The thread is titled "hood ornament" Be sure to check post #5

POST 5Original post

Bill, you will find one, they are on ebay and elsewhere. When you go to install it, be VERY careful. You will have to remove the four 6mm screws in the roof. On my 99 C4, these were siezed tight. It is very easy to shear off the screwdriver slot. Then you are in for a tricky and difficult extraction process. So be careful. I don't know why Porsche used screw to protect the threads when a simple plastic plug would have done the job. Anyway, good luck. (You can tell I had a major problem with mine....) ...Rickker

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sounds like fun. yikes. I do have a torque hammer so if tight should do the trick.

POST 9Original post

Actually, the screws don't come out from the top. You have to remove portions of the headliner and dissamble what they are screwed into from below. I have a porsche roof rack sitting in my garage but it is missing pieces and I lost the keys. I have given up on it.

POST 10Original post

What!!U I just bought one and took out the 4 screws from the slots on the roof and screwed in the posts that accept the rack, real easy job.

I don't think we are talking about the same screws. I am referring to the 6mm screws, with a regular slotted head, that are under the flip up doors on the roof. These screws definitely come out from the top. The procedure to remove these is the first item in the instructions for mounting the roof rack, I mean Porsche Transportation System. ...Rickker

Well, perhaps they had been taken out before and lubricated. All I know is that mine, ('99C4) after close to 10 years in position, were very difficult to remove. I did manage to get one out, but the other 3 had to be drilled out, extracted and thread repair routine. ...Rickker

POST 13Original post

I had the same problem with the 4 screws on mine. Brumos got one out, then tried the others several times to no avail. The problem with drilling them out and retapping them, is that underneath that hole is a small amount of air, and then... your headliner. If you try too hard you could unintentionally drill through the headliner. Also, retapping requires some sort of fluid that will then drip down onto the inside of the headliner, spread, and discolor... No I did not find out the hard way. After several attemps to remove them, I finally did the logical thing... I sold the roof rack.

POST 14Original post

Wow! I'm amazed at this.Mine came right out, they are painted so some paint got scraped off the threads when they came out.I wonder if your problems are with too much paint on the threads.

POST 16Original post

Let us know how you make out with getting those 6mm screws out.... (Good luck!!) ...Rickker
