Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have 45K miles on my car and the rear pads need to be replaced. In others experience do the rotors need to be done now or can they wait. This is the REARS. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Based on my experience I'd say NO they probably don't, but then I think people replace rotors waaay too often. Measure the rotor thickness at a few different points around the rotor. If not below minimum thickness and no cracks, don't replace.

POST 3Original post

Get a micrometer and measure them and you'll know if they are within tolerance or not.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 6355961

Dell... when checking for thickness, do you measure the brake pad area (inner rotor) or the outer edge that has the "lip" from the brake pad NOT making contact?

POST 6Original post

The pad area. Although, if you do not have a proper micrometer it could be a little tough. I have one that will allow for that and then let you zero it out at any set location.

POST 7Original post

Rotor thicknesses are usually spec'd as a 'minimum thickness', so to corroborate Dell's reply, the pad area.

POST 9Original post

should not replace pads and rotors at the same time. Wait for a bit for pads to be worn. I replaced rear rotors at 60K miles, but I had track miles on top of normal street wear. Also depends on what compound pads you're running and if aggressive, whether you were putting proper amount of heat into the pads so it wouldn't eat up the rotors.

POST 10Original post

I wonder if some of those numbers are relevent to me. I have PCCBs on my 997 and mic-ed the front pads the other day. 9..71 mm. This is after putting some 34,000 miles on them. I guess these things don't wear much!
