Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I JB-Welded on a super magnet to a spare aluminum drain plug rather than purchase one of these (highly overstated that you may need to replace the stock one with every oil change!) I ran it for a couple of oil change cycles and found nothing attached to it (on my 3.8 Carrera S).
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil about 2k miles ago' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace !) i' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

As an alternative (which I did last time I changed my oil, though not as effective, I think) is to use a small strong magnet in the drained oil pan.

If I ever notice any metal fuzz on the plug when I put it in my 996, I'll have the IMS bearing replaced immediately, as the most likely culprit.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is anyone using it and find metal shaving on it? Has anyone tried this?

Always wonder if this is useful given there's already an oil filter...
Fixed. Thanks.
Yea, you would think Porsche would put one in if useful but then sometimes it's hard to understand them. e.g,. why the oil pressure sensor terminals are bare metal and not protected from the elements and left to corrode.
mine is arriving this week. i guess i won't be able to update if it attracts any particles until my fall/winter oil change. i plan on installing it for my spring oil change in the next couple of weeks.
They definitely work, I've used them on many cars. They are not to filter out the metal, but just to warn you that there is ferrous (bearing/race/ring, etc) wear. If I ever notice any metal fuzz on the plug when I put it in my 996, I'll have the IMS bearing replaced immediately, as the most likely culprit. You really should never see anything or so fine as to not tell that they are particles. As an alternative (which I did last time I changed my oil, though not as effective, I think) is to use a small strong magnet in the drained oil pan. Just move it around in the warm oil for a while and see if you pick anything up. Obviously, the drain plug has oil contact for a very long time and is a better indicator

I have one in my 996. I have an 00 996 with about 77000 miles (original engine). I changed my oil about 2k miles ago. The oil had about 5000 miles on it (yes I know...). I was quite surprised when I saw a fairly decent amount of super fine particles (fuzz) and one metal chunk (about the size of a grain of sand). I am not sure that the metallic drain plug is helping the engine however I think that it is more an indicator for me of engine wear. I would imagine that the fuzz that I was seeing was not the best sign.
That mindset was true with the old Porsche.... This is the era of maximum profit, and the magnet might cost them an extra 49 cents to apply to the plug, so it doesn't get applied... German accounting has far surpassed German Engineering with the M96/97 engine family and this is clear to see from my standpoint.
We developed these primarily for our engines. I dislike the factory drain pugs as their hex is only 8mm and after a few oil changes they strip out.
These use a 10mm hex and are made in the USA from billet aluminum, and like most of our developments they are totally overkill... The rare earth magnet they are equipped with will lift 3 pounds!
The magnet is just an added benefit, the larger hex (10mm) and better material is the real reason we made them...
Jake, thanks for your reply. BTW, how is the magnet attached to the drain plug? By friction fit or epoxy or something else? Any photo of it? There's no photo on your website.
Thanks
