Now that i finally quit smoking (not that I used my lighter or smoked in the car anyway), this is a good use of that hole in the dash!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

35 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If you are like me, you end up checking your brake pads for wear on a very regular basis. They can be hard to see without a flashlight, but who wants to carry around a big bulky flashlight around on a day-to-day basis? I found out that the LED rechargeable flashlight from the VW Phaeton fits perfectly in the cigarette lighter of the 996. It looks good and functions well, although it is a bit pricy at $32.95. You can order it from www.e-partssales.com . I am not affiliated. I just used it again this morning and am always thankful because I never used the original cigarette lighter, and the Porsche flashlight is far larger and uglier.

POST 2Original post

great idea. BTW, what pedals to you have? Thx, mark

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got the pedals from Gert Carnewal: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p96112.htm Just for reference, I have also attached a photo of the Porsche flashlight to show how ugly it is in comparison to the Phaeton's.

POST 4Original post

Cool, thanks. Looks like a very useful "mod". I searched on EBAY and found one for about $28 shipped with Buy It Now from a VW dealership. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW if interested. Thanks again for sharing! Now that i finally quit smoking (not that I used my lighter or smoked in the car anyway), this is a good use of that hole in the dash!

POST 5Original post

TD, the light doesn't drain your car battery? I was just asking since even when you car is off the cig lighter is still on.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think it draws only to charge, so if charged it doesn't drain, but I am NOT certain about that. In any event, it is only a trickle that should not be noticeable. Unplug and remove if you store for the winter.

POST 7Original post

Exc ellent mod TD, and thanks Arctic Fox for saving me 4 bucks!

POST 8Original post

Damn. The Phaeton flashlight will only work on 2002+ 996's. I guess it's time I trade my cabriolet in. Either that or stick to using my little MAG light in the door compartment.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Really? Why? I had assumed it would work in any cigarette lighter, whether Porsche or not. Why won't it work?

POST 10Original post

Not sure why it won't work but the Suncoast product page specifically said it is only for 2002 or newer cars.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

maybe when we meet for coffee you can try it in your car and see what happens . . . but I assume no liability We can report back here . . .

POST 12Original post

I think I heard somewhere that in '02 Porsche went to industry standard sized cigarette lighter plug.

POST 13Original post

I'd just get a LED light that runs on Lithium battery to put into your center console or glove box. My cig lighter is ued for radar at the moment.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

radar detectors are illegal in our area . . .

POST 15Original post

Besides, this is about the urge to mod... not actually about light... I have a $4 led light on my keyring. it's about the size of a nickel. works great. I'm thinking about this mod because of the disease....

POST 16Original post

Excellent idea. Artic Fox...thanks for the heads up...going to order it now. Let the modding begin!

POST 17Original post

Now I know why I had to return an Ipod charger- it would not fit my 01 lighter but worked fine in my other cars.

POST 18Original post

damnit, why did porsche have to make +02 models so different

POST 19Original post

Can you update the older unit with a +02 lighter assembly? Anyone got the part number?

POST 20Original post

You have it backwards. Porsche made the pre-'02 models different (from standard).

POST 21Original post

This mod is peanuts after my $130 gas cap extravaganza

POST 22Original post

OK...mine is ordered from Ebay! I have to admit I like that gas cap a lot but in NJ you can't pump your own gas so I will never see it.

POST 24Original post

MODS, MODS, MODS!!! Will it ever end!!!!! HAHAAHA

POST 26Original post

The mod fever runs rampant. I got mine. Thanks for the ebay "heads up". I got the gas cap mod too. I don't drive the car a whole lot so I only get to see it occasionally.

POST 27Original post

I just bought the VW light before I realized that it wont fit my 99 Anyway, I paid $28 for it shipped. It should be here in a week. If you are looking for one, email me, Ill sell this one shipped for the same price. Thanks!

POST 28Original post

Me too which is why I asked about updating the plug to a current spec. But no one responded. I may have to call the local dealer and ask what the part number is and how much $$$. -Darren

POST 30Original post

kirb - I like your new sig! Different from typical sig, but cool!

POST 31Original post

I picked up one of these lights the other day. It was cool and I loved the look. However it would not work in my '99 996 lighter socket as the socket diameter was greater than the light. Luckily the VW parts house took it back with no restocking fee. BTW, the local VW dealership in Austin had it for $25+tax. -Richard

POST 32Original post

Kirby, I like your new sig too, but the lettering is a bit blurred

POST 33Original post

like a northern pike to a Dare devil, i also reflexed and snapped one up.

POST 34Original post

I really wanted to get the Phaeton LED lighter flashlight but it won't fit in my 2000 Cab. Since I couldn't mod the lighter socket I did the next best thing...I modded my flashlight! I was at REI and saw the upgrade kit for about $7.00 and figured what the heck. It's quite a bit brighter than the old MAG Lite bulb, shines white light and should give me longer battery life out of the 2AA batteries. Good mod. http://www.niteize.com

POST 35Original post

Mine arrived today from the Ebay purchase...turns out it's Martens Volkswagen in Bethesda, MD. Very quick turn around time...I was impressed. I'll plug it in on the way home!
