So I will do a search on a wholesale dealer network that we're part of that only deals in the same type of cars as we do, clean ones with no stories.

The issue with it being so fast-paced is that you have limited time to inspect the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am in the hunting process of looking for a 996. I have used a few venues for this; Autotrader, Cars.com, and Ebay. The wildcard in this is that I also have a friend who is a dealer and can get me cars from auctions, I just need to pay him $2k above the cost of the car plus $500 fees. What I dont like about the auction is that I cant see or drive the car before purchase and also the car will most likely not be exactly what I'm looking for in terms of colors and options. Also, I am thinking of buying a beater for the rest of the summer because my current car is being sold then purchase the 996 in the fall/winter when prices are cheaper..... What have you guys found to be the best way of going about finding a reliable, clean 996? I am looking to spend around $43k total. Warranty would be nice but I'm not counting out cars without warranty. What do you guys think?

POST 3Original post

If you live in Jersey you should go to the Manheim Auto auction in PA, can probably find someone to charge $500 over cost of vehcile (plus costs) on the internet. Don pay your "friend's guy" $2K, these days thats about all you'll save going to an auction anyway (lots of "retail" customers now drives "wholesale" prices up). "ttowsontt" has a nice 2001 black w/ aero pkg for sale..... Otherwise you always take chances when buying used....... Good luck

POST 4Original post

What have you guys found to be the best way of going about finding a reliable, clean 996? I am looking to spend around $43k total. Personally I would never buy an auction car. Way too much risk for me. Didn't you read the recent post from the poster in Towson, MD? Although he didn't list a selling price for his 01 996, I think you should be in his price range and you will have far less risk buying from him than you would buying from an auction.

POST 5Original post

Buy the extended waranty, well worth it.. Very best of luck! you won't be sorry.

POST 6Original post

Hi Guys, I would say that if your only opportunity to buy at an auction is through your "friend" who is going to stick you with $2,500 in fees for his services that you should probably take a pass. I have several reasons for this; first of all buying at an auction is very fast-paced. This may not seem to be a big deal, but trust me, it is. The issue with it being so fast-paced is that you have limited time to inspect the car. I'll share two stories to prove my point. I work for a private (non-franchise) dealership called The Last Detail that specialises in no-accident, all-origional, low mileage highline cars. A former sales manager went to an auction and purchased a gorgeous 2003 BMW M3 with 5,000 miles on it. He realised that it had manual seats, but figured customers would get past that when they saw the mileage and condition of the car. What he did not realise is that the car also lacked a sunroof, which caused it to sit here for a LONG time. At another auction, a 2002 S55 was purchased. The weather at the auction was overcast and when he drove ti back to the dealer, it was sunny. When the car was viewed in the sun, we realized that the front left fender was an entirely different color. (For the record, I don't mean purple when it should have been red: the car was a Champagne metallic type color, and the fender was simply a different shade of that color) The car was returned to the seller as we would never sell something ilke that, we were lucky because the seller could have just told us we were out of luck. My point is, that the auction does not allow for a thorough inspection of the vehicle. Not to mention that you have no way of getting under the car to make sure everything down there is kosher. Here at The Last Detail, we do complementary inspections on used cars people are looking at elsewhere. I would highly reccomend finding someone local to you who does the same, or even pay a mechanic if you have to, it could be well worth it in the long run. So how can you find the car you're looking for? Well you seem to have covered the normal avenues. If you would like to give me a call at [phone removed] I would be happy to find out exactly what you're looking for (I know I don't have it in stock, at the moment we only have 2 911's an '02 911 Targa and an '02 Turbo. So I will do a search on a wholesale dealer network that we're part of that only deals in the same type of cars as we do, clean ones with no stories. If I find something, I'll tell you. if the dealer who has the car is closer to you than I am, I'll tell you where it is to make your life easier, and save you teh cost of shipping and the middle man I hope that helps, let me know if I can help you in any way. Jeremy
