All times I used a shop that was part of a chain of big rig truck stop oil changer that had an oil analysis machine on site and that I could watch the process.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, If you missed my post "Oil Filter Exam"...check it out. I would like to know if anyone knows a lab that can give me an analysis of the metal flakes in my filter? If possible, a lab that knows the Porsche metalurgy. Many Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Blackstone labs which does oil analysis, will give you a good reading of the metallic debris in an oil sample.

Blackstone of course gets lots of recommendation and I can't recommend any other over Blackstone. You can tell if there are ferrous or non-ferrous. Beyond that I'm not sure what value an analysis of the metal will provide you. Now it might be of some value if you had the oil analyzed. The few times I've had oil analyzed I collected a small sample from the draining stream of oil and this was fed into the machine. All times I used a shop that was part of a chain of big rig truck stop oil changer that had an oil analysis machine on site and that I could watch the process. After a while the printout came out with the results. If you just send in a flake of metal it might not be possible to analyze it without being in a sufficient quantity of oil. If the piece of metal gets picked up with the very small amount of oil that is analyzed the ppm count may be off the scale. But give Blackstone a call or visit their web site and see what's available, see if they'll provide you with instructions on how to get the metal flakes analyzed along with the oil. Sincerely, Macster.
