Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, title says most of it. My story is pretty simple: graduated professional school in May, working my way in as a partner at a great local practice, 27 years old, no kids, time to start shopping for a toy. I currently drive a 2002 Saab 95 Aero 5 speed, love that thing. Smooth ride, roomy for me, great gas mileage on the highway, just a great ride. But its boring. I want something fun, something new to me. I was turned on to Porsche's 5 years ago when my dad bought a 2001 C4 6 speed. Seal gray, black full leather interior, sport classic wheels, just a great and fun car. Ive had plenty of fun with that thing, and vowed when I finished school I would be behind the wheel of my own. That time may be getting near. I expect this process to take anywhere between a week and 12 months before I pull the trigger (basically need just the right car to show up) I've been reading this site, reading reading reading all I can, learning as much as possible. Getting a good feel for what is realistic for each model of car out there. I am astonished at the value an early 2000's 996 is. Reasonable price, relatively reliable cars, and best of all, a good daily driver. Being in Indiana and looking for a pretty much every day car, a C4 or C4S is almost a must in my mind. All wheel drive in a Porsche with the proper tires = genius in inclement weather. As I have been looking more and more, I am getting a little more interested in going the Turbo route. I know I will some day want to, hell they're just too gorgeous to say no to. The trouble I'm having is getting a good idea on pricing. I see pricing all over the place, from 50 at the top to 38 at the bottom for '01 - '03 turbos. I have seen some 2001s at near 50, and a few 2003 (high mileage, granted) as low as low 40s. What is a good price point for the 2001-2003 turbos? I am not looking for a garage queen with crazy low miles, only options I care about are Litronics (which I believe are standard on turbos?) and rear wiper would be cool, but not at all a must have. Love all the colors of the rainbow for 996's, not crazy about the deep red or arrest me red shades, but again, I am considering each example I see out there. So, any advice as I move forward (other than the standard, PPI, PPI, PPI!)? Good starting point for 01-03 turbos? Looking forward to becoming a part of the community John

POST 2Original post

Welcome John, congrats on your graduation. You are def on the right track when it comes to Pcar shopping...buy a well maintained used Pcar and you'll save thousands.... If and when the time comes that you may want to walk into a dealer and special order one, well...you'll get to that bridge one day also... Price ranges run just about where you have been seeing... C4S ( later years mkII version), can run from mid 30's and up. (Arnee's car comes to mind, but that was def a rare case). 01+ turbos with a well recorded history...38K and up, also depending on mileage, options, mods. Some cars FS are priced to sell and others will sit for a long time unsold due to unrealistic asking prices... Also, high mileage Pcars shouldn't deter you...it's the maintenance history that you should look alot more into. So.... keep on looking in the RL classifieds, or as a paid member, get in on the member classifieds...There have been some very nice cars FS here in just about every variety... You can also keep an eye on ebay, autotrader, etc... but you may not always get straight answers when inquiring on ownership, maintenance, etc. GL in your search...

POST 3Original post

Take your time and find the Porsche that fits your needs(desires) and price. Peruse as many for sale sights as you can, and try to drive a Turbo and a C4 and C4s so you can make an educated guess and narrow your search. Congrats on graduating, GL with your search.

POST 4Original post

Plenty of turbos for sale on 6speed. Its turbo traffic is like the 996 and 993 traffic here on RL. Good luck with your hunt and post pics when you take delivery.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Joined up as a paid member, will keep looking at members classifieds in addition to autotrader, ebay, craigslist, random used car lots! Love any insight people have about the 2001 turbos vs 2003 c4s

POST 6Original post

Welcome to RL! My only suggestion is that TT's is a LOT of car for a someone who has not had a history driving a rear engine car. Turbos are awesome cars and super fast. I guess I say because trouble can happen fast driving these cars if your not used to it.....also jealous. A good DD is a C4 or C4S. I have snows on and had a blast on the way home from work tonight with the fresh snow. Whatever you choose you will be a happy camper.

POST 7Original post

+1..... DD = carrera. Its not gonna be your last Porsche so save the turbo or gt3 as a special drive later on. Its easier live with going up in power, but not so easy the other way around.

POST 8Original post

What? You're saying that a stripped, caged de-muffler'ed C4S isn't a DD? This is news to me!
