Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report a fix

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Replace car' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace car' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace car', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

if the car pulls hard to redline, change your MAF.

Don't rule out your engine's oil viscosity when running an engine with hydaulic lifters.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I tried searching for some answers to this... but it was difficult to come up with a decent search string...
Coming from a Honda S2000 and spending a lot of time in M3s... I'm used to engines that pull harder and harder the closer they get to redline. I feel that my C4S pulls very hard, but as it nears the upper rev ranges, it starts to loose its breath.
Anyone else feel this way? TB cleaning needed? Could it just be the 95degree Houston weather?
Thanks and happy motoring.
Yes, I remember mine could of shifted a little sooner to help acceleration, maybe 200-400 RPMs (it was a Tip).
Don't forget the high humidity of Houston too.
But, I think the E46 M3's (if that's what you are referring to) fall on their face too before redline.
Might be something like your TB cleaning.
Mine pulls hard enough I have to pay attention to the gage when driving hard... no sense I'm at redline until the limiter tells me.
Actually, E36 - that car just gets angrier as it revs on. The S2000 as well - it pulls strong all the way up. I just feel like my 996 feels a little flat at the top...
I just assumed these cars performed best when shifted at redline, but perhaps not... When do you all shift when running wot?
I have found that shifting just before redline is the best. In this manner you will maintain your RPM's in the maximum bell curve for both HP and torque and will acutally accelerate better than if you shifted at or beyond redline. And remember if you do go into the redline the rev limiter will kick in as a protection. At least this happens on my 997S. Best RPM shift for me is between 6700-6800. Within that band she truly is a monster.

My '99 runs out of power only if I hit the rev limiter. It pulls hard and strong and I can't tell redline is approaching unless I look at the tach. I've had years of racing experience so I'm used to making use of all the high end power a motor will put out. I think the early 996s have a different feel (good) as far as throttle response and power delivery and also, they are lighter.
mine runs to 7000 strongly and only gets stronger. make sure your cam sensors are switching..... I had this happen and the car was dead after 4 or 5 grand gutless, it was fixed easily and runs fine.
ok stupid question (since this is my first 911)... i like the sound, and i hope (think) its normal, but the engine gets really raspy near redline... is this typical?
Yes, but to me (being a drag racer), S54's feels like they stop pulling before that. I always shift a car the split-second I feel the engine plane out, puts the engine in a better torque range to carry the car quicker IMO.
That is an old school theory, don't you think? The weight of the valvetrain in the M96 is very light (no pushrods, lighter spring rates) compared to an old V-8. I mean, we are still talking 40 weight oil that I assume most are running.
a MAF in its early stages of decline can cause this issue (so can a dirty one!). turn off the car, unplug the MAF, and go for a drive. if the car pulls hard to redline, change your MAF.
A hydraulic lifter is still a hydraulic lifter. As the speed of the piston increases, improper oil often prevents the lifter from a full pump which in turn decreases valve lift. This was, in fact, a problem in the old days and continues to be a problem today.
Remember, there is a HUGE range in allowable viscosity in 40 weight oils. Not all 40 weight oils are alike.
Mine pulls hard all the way. I upshift for dragracing at about 6700 indicated (1-2), then about 7000 for the rest of em...
Keep from smacking the rev limiter that way.
I know the actual RPM is higher than indicated and revs faster, especially in the lower gears. Mine has a LW flywheel though, so you may shift at a little higher revs. Never seemed the power was falling off at any point...
My car pulls really hard the last 1000 rpms or so before red line. In fact it sounds like it's opening up like an afterburner and just screams to redline. I do have the X51 factory installed so that could have something to do with it.
