Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I drive a 2017 Panamera Turbo, which I love. A friend of mine's son recently bought a 1998 993 and loves it. That got me thinking about adding a 911 to my stable for driving around when I am by myself (or at least without our dog), if it could be had at a decent price. I noticed that a 996 goes for about a quarter of the price of a 993. I gather relatively few 993s were built. Are there other considerations?

POST 2Original post

Which 996 model are you interested in? You are on a forum for the rarest versions of the 996 (GT2, GT3, GT3 RS) Might be better off asking on '996 Forum' .

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. I inadvertently posted in the wrong forum. Too many options!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the video, ssherman. Very helpful. Sounds like I would like the 996 better and it is way cheaper.

POST 6Original post

You really want to drive these variants, as they are all different and Im guessing one will speak to you more than another. You will not drive a 993 and say that it drives like a 996 and vice versa.

993 Buy in to the air cooled price bubble. But more acceptance from Anoraks. The styling is a bit hybrid for full classic acceptance compared with a G Body. Offset pedals, laughable air conditioning demisting ( I think these are safety not comfort issues) . 996 not buying into a bubble, won't be accepted by Anoraks, a plus in my opinion. Styling has become more resolved with time, future prices softer but less capital thrown. Air conditioning should be great. Car selection, pre-purchase "guilty until proven innocent" being prepared for maintenance bills both care and preventative applies to both. Ex 2.7 G body owner.

POST 8Original post

Both are fantastic cars, so it all depends on what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend. The 996 offers considerably more value for your money though: a 996.2 GT3 or 996 Turbo will only be marginally more expensive than a 'standard' 993.

POST 9Original post

Frankly, after owning two air-cooled Porsches (911SC and Carrera) and two water cooled Porsches (996GT3 and 997S), I am over the older air-cooled cars. If you want to buy a 993 for its coolness and as a collectible then buy it. But as driving experience, compared to any modern Porsche 911, it just won't hold up. Certainly not 4x the price. In fact, I would claim that my 996 GT3 is more collectable than a 993.

POST 11Original post

I've owned a '00 996 Carrera for three years and was ready for something different so I test drove two 993s (both manual RWD narrow body). I always loved the styling, and thought I would enjoy driving them more than a 996 since I'm a classic car guy at heart. But it was a disappointment. As good as they sound from the outside, from inside it's just... noise. Revving them out is a disappointment, the 993 engine is quite lazy while the 996 3.4 engine has a fun extra push beyond 5k rpm. Roadholding is in no way as agile and fun as a 996 C2 and you feel the extra weight that the 993 has. A 996 C2 is just more eager to go and more fun to drive, sounds better inside the car, and of course it's also more comfortable with better A/C etc. It's really a no-brainer. Eventually I switched to a 996 Turbo which is less agile than a C2 but makes up for it with a terrific engine. I also own a '70 2.2S which I dearly love so it's not that I always like newer cars. The 993 in my book is just not as good as most other 911s (still need to drive a 964 but I hear it's better). I do think a 993 can be really improved with the right mods but stock for stock, a 996 drives better. But, you really need to try and drive all of these yourself to make up your mind.

POST 13Original post

I've driven a couple of 993's and then my 996's, and there is a charm to the air cooled cars, certainly. However, the 996 is just the better car overall. The best way I can say this: The 993 feels like an "old car," and the 996 feels like a modern car. There's just that gap / divide, and you can't quite put your finger on it, but it's there. It's like driving an old pickup truck vs. a more modern one. It's just DIFFERENT. Overall, I could have bought a 993 when I bought my 996 Turbo, but I'm glad I bought my Turbo.

POST 14Original post

Theres more to it than old vs new. I generally like old cars better but in this case, its different. I see we had the same journey btw!

I had to google it also... " Anorak" is a British slang term which refers to a person who has a very strong interest, perhaps obsessive, in niche subjects. This interest may be unacknowledged or not understood by the general public"
