Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I paid 450 for 2 keys.....one new one and one needed to be replaced...maybe it was cheaper because I had one key and they only needed to replace the "head" and program it??

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So yesterday I posted my first thread, and I will get some pics, anyway I only have one key, previous owner either lost it or whatever, car is a 99 coupe, contacted local dealer $450.......for a key!!! The car has a compustar system on it, so only need the actual key, does it have a chip in it?? Any advice really appreciated...thx

POST 2Original post

In the interest of security, the keys are holders for a special chip which the car identifies as either the right chip or the wrong chip. Ye,--nothing cheap about this. Perhaps more dealers will learn to gather up ALL the keys when a car is traded in.

POST 3Original post

You can try a different dealer if you have one in your area. If not you are stuck to pay$$

POST 4Original post

Call around, key should be no more than $150-175 at a dealer and programming is an hours labor usually, even though it only takes 10 minutes.

POST 5Original post

check with sunset....they can get you a cheaper key fob...though it will still need to be programmed...anyone with PST2 or PIWIS....

POST 6Original post

if you just need a backup, call sunset to get a valet key without remote.

POST 7Original post

Also: If you are a PCA member you will get a price break from most dealers I think. Sunset is terrific - see what they say!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That is good info.......who are Sunset???? Yes I,m going to the corner with my "D" hat on...

POST 10Original post

welcome to the world of Porsche DONT WASH OR LOOSE YOUR KEYS!!!

POST 11Original post

I'm told cars that come with one key are very often repo cars. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's logical.....

POST 12Original post

I bought a repo truck in 1990 with 12k miles on it that had been driven from Washington state to Florida, the repo'd and returned to Washington somehow.... I owned it up until I bought the P-car last year (so 17+ years) and put 175k worry free miles... By far the best car (truck) I have ever owned - was in excellent shape when i sold it and the new owner contacts me from time to time to thank me for such a great truck. (and great deal he got) so it can happen

POST 13Original post

Sadly, extra keys are often stolen out of the car while at auction. They end up on eBay with Navigation discs, remotes, manuals, jacks, etc.

POST 14Original post

I have a new blank you can get cut and programmed. $150.00

POST 17Original post

and a happy ending.....

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 6646559

That's a fair price and about what I paid for a head and blank... you then have to add $80 for a locksmith to cut it (but not just any locksmith can do it) and $55 to get it programmed... If you can get a completely functional key for under $300 that's probably about the best you can do... which is what I did; my one-stop shop (dealer) wanted $350 plus the $55 to program the key... Wait you have the blank and your giving head ....LOL couldn't resist

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 6646559

If only the stealerships would include this, then I wouldn't feel so bad paying full price.

POST 21Original post

yes, while we program your new key, please insert your $#^*& in this hole.......If you are an average man, things should "finish up" about the same time HHAAAHAA

POST 22Original post

I paid 450 for 2 keys.....one new one and one needed to be replaced...maybe it was cheaper because I had one key and they only needed to replace the "head" and program it?? And now one of the keys doesn't work anymore.......so there goes another $....

POST 23Original post

Remember to use both keys occasionally...rumor has it if the key is not used for an extended period of time it will need to be reprogrammed...another scam...LOL
