Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
The biggest expense when I got mine done was replacing the rear main seal and the intermediate shaft seal.
Leading evidence: 'Replace rear main seal and the intermediate shaft seal' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rear main seal and the intermediate shaft seal' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey folks - I came rolling back into Rennlist the other day ito a new group and should have intro'd myself properly: Retired Navy guy working in the government RDT&E sector in N. VA/DC. I've been a 911 kook since my first 75' 911S back in the late 80's living the young officers dream in San Diego. I moved up to an 82' SC, then 'over' to a cool brown on brown vinyl 79' SC that I should have kept ( S/R delete and crank windows...what a great car), then to the holy grail (at the time) 84' Carrera. Off the Porsche fad for a few years then rolled back into it with a Black on tan 95' 993 then a GR 95' 993 - both gone now. (BTW: I got paid to shoot clay targets for US Navy while I was active duty (All American) and still shoot competitively, so anybody coming to the N. VA/DC area and want to knock down some skeet targets at the club between tournament weekends, let me know! We have 7 skeet and trap fields! I also give free tours of the Pentagon if anyone is interested.)
Back to cars - Cooled off for a year - now getting the itch for a water-baby. And so here I am again - after I swore off P-cars to my understanding wife - smack in the middle of an on-going midlife crisis episode that I'm sure no one on this forum can relate to - going nuts looking for a car that I *probably* don;t need
Lots of them out there and I am zeroing in on a 2001 Silver on Gray C4 6spd, 33K miles lots of options (but no LItronics - dang). One owner car that is hovering at 25.5K pending upcoming PPI. I had originally desired a Tip due to an over-saturated commuter area, but backed off a little since there are very few of them around. So now I'm back to manual shift - oh well.
BTW: Thanks to the orchestrators, technical & non-technical contributors and members of Rennlist - this is a very terrific forum!!!
BTWW: the guys on the hot air - I mean, aire-cooled side are very cool too
Now - any thougts on the car I have in my sights?
Marlon, welcome to the 996 Forum. Good luck on your search.
When you get the car be sure to post pics, otherwise that ******* Tim will be all over you for not posting.... oh wait.... I'm Tim.... uhmmm...... scratch the ******* part!
.
Welcome back into the fold. I'm looking forward to seeing pics as well.
Please search and refer to the *******'s...er...I mean Tim's list of mods.
I was almost banned before I even finalized my car purchase. I even posted pics before I bought it. Fortunately I was allowed to continue posting.
Ok - here's the run down following the PPI:
33K mile 2001 C4 6spd, asking $25.5K:
- weak battery
- clogged plenum drains (whats that???)
- Needs brake flush
- clutch hard (Needs flush?)
- main seal leaking
- spark plug tubes (???)
- valve cover bolts
I have not talked tot he mechanic at the dealer yet. Do I have any negotiating room???
When I bought my 996 it had a few issues too, including the leaking seal. I ended up negotiating with the seller to cover the cost for repairs. You certainly do have some room. Is this a private seller or a dealer?
I would get an estimate for all the repairs first. I wouldn't settle for less than half the cost of the repairs. The biggest expense when I got mine done was replacing the rear main seal and the intermediate shaft seal. The cost for these two items alone was ~$1,300.
Does the intermediate shaft seal allow replacement of the shaft itself? I've heard that this shaft is one of the early 996 engine failure modes. Seems like the RMS can be done at the same time a new clutch is installed???
