Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, has anyone had experience with installing the roof transport system on their 996? I am having trouble unlocking the tube ends with the keys that came with the unit (purchased used). Without unlocking I can not install the roof transport system. Is there any trick to unlocking them? many thanks, Sam

POST 2Original post

are you able to turn the key at all? if yes, then you just need to firmly pull the endcap off to get to the mounting screw. maybe spray with some dw40 or similar solution if difficult to turn the key.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6650211

No turn at all. I did try the DW-40 lubricant, no success.

POST 4Original post

They may be rusted! Looking at your picture the key appears to be in the unlocked position.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6650898

So the 12 o'clock position is "Open"? I pulled as hard as I can no movement. The bar is firmly attached to the base bracket and there is only access to one of the retaining screws so I don't think I can even loosen up the bar. I am not even sure if that's needed before sliding the black caps. Very frustrating. Sam

POST 6Original post

OK So I went in the garage again and looked closely at these locks. I was WRONG before, too early in the morning!! The vertical position is the LOCKED position to un-lock them you turn the key counter clockwise or to the LEFT. I only checked the right passinger ones as that is the side accesable to me where they are stored. So maybe you are turning the key the wrong way?

POST 7Original post

Question #2 You do need to slide that part back to access all the bolts(2) to install the rack.Do not pull the black lock assembly( once you get it out) too far out of the channel as it will break off the little plastic tab that holds it in the channel and they will keep falling out unless the lock mechanism is locked in. Hope this helps!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Maurice, I tried all your suggestions but no luck. I think it may be the key so I plan to take the rack to a locksmith and let them figure it out. Sam

POST 9Original post

sam, so i'm guessing the key just doesn't turn? i do remember my first time trying to open and the key wouldn't turn. turned out that i had to firmly push the key into the keyhole. then it would turn.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6652774

Correct. It just doesn't turn. I tried it in every possible way. Taking it to a locksmith today. thx, Sam

POST 11Original post

Check to see if there's a code on both the lock & key - they should match.

POST 12Original post

I looked at mine, and I only saw a number on the key.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Only code is found on key "036". I just dropped it off at the locksmith, they think a new key can be made. I'll know by tomorrow. Sam

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Problem solved. The locksmith guy made a new set of keys, locks open, cost $21. Sam

POST 15Original post

so what was the problem? original keys just worn out from years of use? wierd.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

locksmith guy said they were not the right keys. Sam

I was going to suggest this but thought it wouldn't have added to the thread! And I would have sounded like a smart ***.
