Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace by porsche' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace between 99 and 01' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My understanding is that ALL warranty replaced engines are REBUILT units NOT new.

I do recall that when I found out mine was replaced it made me feel very confident about my purchase of this car.

The 3.6 litre cars have variocam, which changed the configuration of the timing chains (and tensioner system?) but otherwise, the same IMS mounting system and the same sprocket design?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In my search for a 996, I find myself vascilating between the excellent value that the 1999 MY cars offer, and the potential added security of a later car. I want to stick with the 3.4 litre cars, since I prefer the headlights, and can't *afford* the premium the facelift cars demand.
So, I guess my question is, when did the intermediate shaft sprocket get upgraded? I know it's not a huge failure item, but in my head that might make the decision easier.
For instance there's a couple of 2001 models on cars.com which I'd like to stretch to, but I want to know if I'm getting anything substantially more for my money.
Thanks
I have a 2004 which broke and wiped out the engine in late 2003. I was told by the dealer that the BOLTS holding the assembly in place were too small and fail. The dealers try to replace them (upgrade) any time they can during other work like RMS, Clutch, etc. You might want to just find a car you like and see if the records indicate the IMS update at any point. eric
A 2004 that broke in 2003. Was it like brand new, or is there a typo? I'm looking at a 2002 model right now. 40somethingK miles. If the price works for me then I'm stretching to the 3.6 litre car. I'd hoped to get the upgraded IMS, but it sounds like I won't.
no the plus cars came out in 02
there are no bolts to change for strengh, the bolts are chnaged for oil leaks
the entire support was redesigned in 05-06
OK - so as I think I understand it, the 3.4 litre engines are all the same, with the possible exception of an RMS evolution. No mechanical diffferences. The 3.6 litre cars have variocam, which changed the configuration of the timing chains (and tensioner system?) but otherwise, the same IMS mounting system and the same sprocket design?
In the 997 series, the IMS was redesigned.
Have I got that right?
thanks
3,6 Engines keep failing too. I know of a 2003 996 3,6 with only 40k miles that failed last week due to IMS bolt breaking, and causing a real mess inside. I find this TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE for Porsche engines.
99firehawk,
There's been extensive discussion on this and other sites about IMS failure on 986/987/996/997 engines. Suppose stv951's acquaintance (who just lost a 996 3.6 engine last week) replaces his/her engine with a brand new one from Porsche. Will it have the identical IMS design of the original engine, or will it have a redesigned IMS?
Thanks.
My understanding is that ALL warranty replaced engines are REBUILT units NOT new. Therefore, they DO have the upgrade to the IMS. That is what I was told on this board but I cannot remember where I saw it. I do recall that when I found out mine was replaced it made me feel very confident about my purchase of this car. I do not baby it, and I have a ton of racing experience with two west coast driving championships in GT4 not to mention my NASCAR bumpin bangin and traden paint experience.
