Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

High to all, I was wondering what would be the best route to achieving a Black finish on my 18" Turbo style wheels on my 996, or at least that's what they are referred to on the window sticker!!! Also, any suggestions in the LA area?? And before anyone dings me, I DAFS! Cheers, K

POST 2Original post

you will get different opinions here. i recently did some reserch on this as well and ultimatley concluded that painting is the best way to go. the painting process is all about the proper preparation of the surface to achieve a good quality finish. the main draw back with powder coating is the heat that is required to bake the finish. many say that the temps can effect the integrity of the metal, espcially if the wheels are hollow spoke. also if the powder coating gets damaged it will be more costly to repair.

POST 3Original post

Since your wheels are factory and have a factory powder coat, I recommend getting them lightly blasted and going for paint. As for the powder coat, the annealing process takes place at a FAR higher temperature than can be achieved by most powder coating ovens. And...the powder coat process only requires 15-20min in the oven at 400 degrees. FWIW - I powder coated my factory GT3 wheels through a local metallurgist. Who said powder coating factory wheels is something he does all the time. However, I highly recommend getting the opinion of a qualified metallurgist rather than taking any of our opinions. Here are the folks I used: http://www.procryo.com/ Good luck... C.

it looks like you are not local but i just had my carrera classic pwr coated by American Briteworks and had them polished lip (clearcoated the barrel). They do alot of high end cars. Speak to Gwan American Briteworks [phone removed] Located in Garden Grove at Magnolia exit off the 22 Fwy. Good luck.

POST 6Original post

definatly go powdercoat. i had a painted set of HRE's on my old m3 and they chipped terribly (from the lug wrench and from unavoidable road debris). i have this of 996 HS's on now powdercoated black p.s. i've found that a google search of "custom powder coating" and your city/state yields good results

POST 7Original post

The guys at Wheel Dynamics in Culver City had my wheels painted somewhere before I picked them up. They did a pretty good job on them too. They could probably steer you in the right direction for getting them done locally.

Thanks to the above; calicoupe, midcont & JC3D. (JC3D - Impressive site - very creative and carries a lot of momentum. Have been in the industry myself for over 15 years now as a DM consultant... keep it up!) Back to the thread - I think I'm convinced on Powder! I think it will be more durable in the long run. Midcont - the wheels you showed on your '97 T, are exactly what I'm looking for. Will make some calls in the morning. Do you know what I can expect to pay for a set? K

Folks...for those who do not know....CONTACT A PROPER METALLURGIST. There are a lot of myths out there about powder coating. Research first. Take the knowledge here with a grain of salt. C.

POST 12Original post

Chad is spot on with his advice. Not ALL powder coating uses temps that can affect the integrity of the wheel. Personally, I would not do it for track wheels unless I could have it certified by a metallurgist. Hence, the reason my choice is paint.
