Leading evidence: 'pinhole in the oil separator belllows' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pinhole in the oil separator belllows' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bellows tube' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I checked the log file for the code - yes it is P1118 (ND).

Upon reseting, the check engine eventually returns.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got a check engine light with OBD 2 code P1118. Even though I have the 996 shop manual it does not have the DME5.2 codes in it. After a bit of searching I found a code list at RennTech.org. The list has P1117 & P1119, but not P1118. Upon reseting, the check engine eventually returns. I also noticed that there was a TSB W201 concerning O2 sensor heat faults and the codes in the vicinity of P1118 all referenced O2 sensor related faults. I registered (donated to RennTech) as the info they have is great.
What I want to know is how can I download the TSB for W201, and also interested to read TSB's associated with new DME software. Maybe getting the new DME software changes the thresholds and the check engine light will stay off.
If your car is a MY99 then it has DME 5.2 not DME 7.2 as spelled out in TSB W201 (for MY2000) cars.
Next time the light comes on again have the code read by someone else or verify that it is P1118 (and not P0118).
Are there any other indications? rough running?
(also you do realize this is Rennlist not Renntech.org... and thank you for your donation!)
Loren,
Happy to see your reply, as I have seen many helpful posts from you. I noticed that you post a ton in both forums. My RennTech access to the TSB's is now OK - very informative. The P1118 code was read with a laptop using the
www.OBD-2.com
software. I checked the log file for the code - yes it is P1118 (ND). When the check engine light returned some 100 miles later, the new code was P1126, which is described as "Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cyl. 4-6) - Rich Threshold. The engine seems to runs fine. I searched TSB-W201 for my VIN (
WP0AA2997XS627291
) but now that I can read the TSB's I see it is for DME 7.2 (MY2000). Still a bit curious about the fault detection thresholds and whether the DME software is well behaved. I checked the O2 sensor heater circuits by pulling the connectors under the air cleaners. All 4 sensors read 2.4 0r 2.5 Ohms, which seems normal. I'd replace any that are suspect, but they seem to be a 100,000+ mile maintenance item.
Naturally, upon the first fault occurrance last week I sprayed the connectors lightly with contact cleaner, even though they looked OK, but today I read TSB 2469 that says don't spray them - the wires themselves provide reference air to the O2 sensors and lubricants can block up the wires. I put on 200 highway miles yesterday without any new codes, I just cleaned the connectors up with circuit board "dry" cleaner - hope they are OK. Who would have thought the wires doubled as piping. I think I will give it a bit of time, and check them out next chance I get. You can see the O2 reading constantly oscillating from rich to lean, in the OBD-2 software, so I may plot that data out to see that all 4 sensors are regulating the idle O2 OK. If not maybe it is a good excuse to replace the whole exhaust with 4 new O2 sensors. - Thanks
I don't think the problem is the O2 sensor - the O2 sensor is reporting the problem. P1126 says that the DME can not make the fuel supply rich enough for the the 4-6 cylinder bank (running too lean). The possible causes are air intake leak, low fuel pressure, and fouled injector(s).

Hmm. An exhaust leak seems quite plausible. I did notice a little bit of corrosion in the system. I'll be sure to check it as soon as I get back home. (on the road in Greenville SC at the moment).
Maybe even a better reason to uprade the exhaust. At normal throttle my tires are louder than the engine. A bit more exhaust note would be nice.
