Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The carpet and bottom of the spare tire jacket in the trunk of my C2 is saturated with some kind of oily liquid. At first, I thought this was maybe motor oil as I keep a bottle of it in the trunk, but the bottle is wrapped in a sealed plastic bag w/ no visible leaks. The liquid seems to eat the paint off of printed cardboard boxes (this is how I first noticed that the carpet was saturated) which almost certainly means brake fluid, doesn't it? I've had to top off the brake fluid reservoir about 6 months ago, and brought it in to the dealer to have that done again today. I figured it was simply brake / clutch wear as I do drive the car a lot (~6000 miles over that period) and didn't add very much fluid the first time (about 1/2 way between min / max). FWIW, the brakes have always felt ok; not sure if a slow leak this would really impair their function that much though. However, now that I've noticed the floor of the trunk is covered in this stuff I figure I've got to have a leak. The only other thing I can think of is that the previous owner had a brake system flush done at some point (2-year service, I presume) and perhaps the fluid spilled out at that time. Either way, this sounds expensive. I think I'm going to crawl into a corner and cry for a bit and then call the dealer on Monday.

POST 2Original post

Clean the carpet and tire cover with the Gunk Engine Degreaser and plenty of water. The residue in the trunk needs the same treatment as the paint will be eaten off like the writing on the bottles. You can shop vac out the residule. Clean the fittings with a non-chlorinated brake cleaner, wipe off. Have a friend pump the brake/clutch and see if you can determine the origin. Fix as needed. Remember leaks flow down hill. Good luck. \

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The dealer told me that the fittings on the bottom of the brake fluid reservoir were loose. They tightened the fittings and removed, cleaned, and reinserted the carpet behind the spare tire / amplifier. They also cleaned the residue from the metal walls and floor of the trunk. I took the remaining pieces (front part of the carpet and the spare tire jacket) to a coin carwash and blasted them with soap and a pressure washer for about 30 minutes. Put them back in after they had dried. This seems to have done the trick (knock on wood).
