Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been a Boxster owner for many years and have loved it. I'm convinced now I need to upgrade to a 996. So 3.4L for the early years vs 3.6L for the later. What's good? what's not? Pro's and Con's? Preferences? Anything major to watch for when purchasing? Thank you all in advance for your wealth of knowledge. Mush appreciated. Future 996 Owner

POST 2Original post

LOTS of stuff if you search. Bottom line to me though, is that the performance difference isn't as big as the drivability difference. The 3.6 has a much better torque at lower revs which means it's much easier to stay in the power band. There are quite a few other differences in the '02's and later 996s besides the engine, of course. For most people, it's a matter of whether they want to spend the extra money on the '02 and later cars.

POST 3Original post

If you're coming from a Boxster, then both cars will seems NOTICEABLY more powerful (and this is from my own personal ownership experience with a Boxster S). Instead, I would focus on buying the best and newest car that meets your budget. If you have an unlimited budget, then I think you already know what you should buy and shouldn't be trying to save pennies. Otherwise, it all comes down to getting the most for your money.....and there are a lot of great specimens across all 3.4 and 3.6 model and price ranges.

POST 4Original post

When I first bought a 996 after having owned a Boxster S, I hated it. The 996 feels much heavier, and the stock U.S. suspension is very soft and "wallowy." I had serious buyer's remorse for the first couple of months. Then I installed PSS9s and GT3 sways and fell in love with the car. You have to understand this, though: IMHO, the Boxster is more of a traditional "sports car" and the 996 is more a powerful, luxurious GT car. So, whether you will be happy with it or not depends largely upon your expectations. Sure, the 996 has more power, but . . . . power is only part of the equation. Want a sports car? Get a GT3 or Cayman S. Want a GT? Few cars beat a 996.

POST 5Original post

If youre coming from a Boxster S, you need to get the 3.6.. difference is the low end torque is much better on the 911.. I agree with the suspension comment above... you will feel that your Boxster is more planted on highspeed... I have X74 suspension coming

POST 6Original post

I agree with TD and many will try to argue with us over this. I am sooooo glad that I made the move from a Boxster to my 996. With that said, if you are looking for pure performance vehicle I would stay with the Boxster and spend the difference on mods. The handeling charicteristics are awesome in the Boxster. With that said, I find my 996 more fun to drive. I love everything about it and although it is harder to handle on the autocross course, the 100+HP is very noticable, plus I have cup holders and a glass rear window Seriously, the 996 is the car I have alwasy dreamed of and there are very few times I miss my Boxster. Once I get the PSS9s like TD I may never miss it. Good luck!
