Happened to me last weekend on the 101 near Oceanside Ca - crested a small hill, still below the speed limit, got hit by LASER just before I was due to hit the gas..
Leading evidence: 'hit the gas' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'hit the gas' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check surveys, and make your own mind up' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use big L mode, it does cut down on the false blips.

If you're buying new however - check the surveys, and make your own mind up which is the best on the market.

Suggestion
The Passport scores very highly in all of these areas, giving better warning range, dramatically fewer false triggers, no cellphone triggers, no need to manually change modes to try and mitigate false positives, and in addition better detection of the newer instant-on POP RADAR.

No more police hiding 'behind' that gas station door opener signal to get you - you can see both triggers clearly on the Passport, and can even see if there is more than one trogger per band, ie more than one cop running RADAR in the trap area.

I have a belltronic..supposed to one of the best in the industry!.....well let me tell you...it goes of near every gas station, car dealer, parking lot etc.....but 2 days ago the best test of all.......(AND IT DIDN'T GAVE ONE BEEP!!!!)....a cop with a laser gun pointing in my direction about 400 feet away......what the hell????
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought an 02 996 Cab a few weeks ago and need to invest in a radar detector. I have been using a friends Passport and like it...but I have heard good things about the V1. Thoughts? Thanks.

Luckily the people in the oposite direction were flashing their headlights like crazy....but still shouldn't the super doeper radar detector go off??? If you ask me...keep your eyes open and the 300 bucks in your pocket!!
I have the passport and it has saved me numerous times. Nicolaas the laser detector on those wont help you anyway...they can only notify you that you been hit, and by that time it's too late. For laser guns you need laser jammers
Passport 8500 X50 - works like a charm
Speedzones Test
And on LASER - you can get reflections off other vehicles to warn you of RADAR ahead, and of course, you get a warning when they directly, even though you've yet to accelerate past the speed limit.
Happened to me last weekend on the 101 near Oceanside Ca - crested a small hill, still below the speed limit, got hit by LASER just before I was due to hit the gas..
Saved me a ticket for sure.

Direction is nothing without detection!!
Passport out guns the V1 on range - 'Its reported signal strength was double that of any other detector'
Seems logical that you'd want as much warning as possible to give yourself the chance to slow down...
That's straight out of the ads. Unfortunately for Valentine, independent tests say otherwise.
I had a Passport and a Valentine. I sold the Valentine and got a second Passport for the other Porsche for the wife. Passport works very well. Valentine probably works well, too, but there are so many false signals, it got to be really annoying, not to mention useless.
Whistler PRO-3450 hidden radar detector. This detector mounts anywhere...its is very small...and it is very inexpensive ($200). I have been using this detector for over a year and it has never missed.
i am a huge V1 fan. valentine was designed by engineers and not by marketing people. i believe that in correct hands and custom programmed for the environment you drive in, V1 is the best.
but you should really take this to a radar detector forum:
http://www.radardetector.net/
V-1, I've had mine for 5 years, works great, upgradable to the newest technology. The arrows are great, lets you know where the radar is coming from. I can't drive without it!
As discussed in independant tests, the V1 lacks range, and provides a large number of false positives - leading to people re-programming their units to mute these signals in order to try and reduce the apparant RADAR trigger rate.
There are reports in the previous thread, from a V1 user, that this lead to him being speed trapped, with the V1 turned on - as he hadn't flipped it back from this muted mode when he'd left an urban area.
Also - note that there are numerous reports of the V1 triggering on cellphone signals - miles from any other forms of interference.
As the whole point of having a detector is to have reliable warnings, with enough time to slow down, and not so many 'cry wolf' triggers that you start to ignore or actually mute them, you can see why the V1 has it's issues.
The Passport scores very highly in all of these areas, giving better warning range, dramatically fewer false triggers, no cellphone triggers, no need to manually change modes to try and mitigate false positives, and in addition better detection of the newer instant-on POP RADAR.
So it gives you a more reliable trigger, and more time to slow down, and it sees POP RADARs that the V1 fails to spot...
And it's cheaper, available at many retailers, is software upgradeable, is smaller and hence easier to conceal on install, and has a brilliant 'expert' mode display, allowing you to see multiple signals on multiple bands, simultaneously.
No more police hiding 'behind' that gas station door opener signal to get you - you can see both triggers clearly on the Passport, and can even see if there is more than one trogger per band, ie more than one cop running RADAR in the trap area.
V1 was top dog for a long time, but right now it's lost it's spot to the Passport X50 - it's just that the current owners would rather live with their bugs than buy an X50, which is understandable.
If you're buying new however - check the surveys, and make your own mind up which is the best on the market.
