Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Another cause is when you shift to 2 way too early.
Leading evidence: 'when you shift' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'when you shift' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pm's.....address included' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've done a search but I want to be clear. This issue is always an issue that needs to be corrected because it causes further damage, and is this covered under Porsche's Extended Warranty?
I first noticed the clunking a few months ago but thought it was just me not engaging or disengaging the clutch properly, since it doesn't occur often.
the problem occurs when you shift too slow and the rpm's drop too low. Another cause is when you shift to 2 way too early. shifting to 2 gets tricky if the rpm's are too low. it gets much easier if you stick in 1 until 3500-4000 rpm's.
Try shifting faster
or don't release the gas pedal fully while shifting from 1 to 2.
I could reproduce this "problem" on all m96 g96 996 I've driven.
my car is no different from new

^ oekodriver: i have the same thing happen to me when i drive in a "lazy" manner. it feels like the thump is comming because there is stress on the drivetrain and when engage the clutch..when the power is disconnected, the stress is free'd causing a sudden spinup in the engine.
i.e.: driving along in heavy traffic at slow speed, low RPM and engaging the clutch to prevent a stall. even without the shift the thump happens.
i.e. #2: shifting first 2 second, not getting off the gas completly and timing it just rite so i'm off the gas and on the clutch at the same time causes the thump.
its doesn't happen all the time, and i don't think it is a mechanical problem.
I get this too, I get it most of the time, but not always.. I do think that it is less apparent if I am at higher RPM's. I typically shift a 3K, is that too low for 1st to 2nd? what about the rest of the gears, they dont do the same clunk when shifting at 3K RPM.
Happens to me too, I find it happens beacuse I am shifting at a low RPM, or if I am lazy and or tired. I find this to happen more so in traffic, I really think its normal for our cars, and by all the replys i am sure it is more now then befor.
