Suggestion

If no liquid leaks evident but fumes smell is evident it can be a leak anywhere above the fuel liquid level....isolating the test area's and placing a small pressure with pressure gauge can test to see it pressure holds.......( later model cars actually do self-tests on the fuel tank and associated parts using an on-board small pressure pump and computer strategy)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone. 996.2 Carrera with fuel smell. Below is what I / we know Smell seems to be coming from the front right. Nothing on the left or rear New fuel cap. OE. Replaced around 3 months ago. Every time I smell the fuel I've tested opening the gas cap and there's no hiss. So in my mind it doesn't hold pressure. Mechanic did smoke test. no smoke no leaks No CEL No codes from ECU Mech pull the entire evap system apart. No cracks etc. Valves all working Check in/around fuel pump - no smoke. Top of fuel pump cover thingy - no cracks. Mech said first place he looked as is common. When I gave it to the Mechanic I gave it to him full of fuel. Seems worse on very hot days and where the roads are more bumpy which would, in my mind, suggest that the heat and jiggling of fuel would create more vapour and increase pressure in the system and it is escaping somewhere. Mech offered to throw parts at it but he's against that sort of trouble shooting for the sake of it and offered to look at it again mid April when he installs the new FVD sump and 997 oil return pipes. The next time I'll give it 90% empty. Any other thoughts / ideas?

POST 3Original post

Just a couple of High Tech thoughts and suggestions... The Charcoal Canister is suppose to capture the fuel fumes/smell from the tank in the Charcoal instead of releasing to Atmosphere.....If the Canister if full of raw fuel due to overfilling/packing the tank or malfunctioning control valves the fumes/smell could be coming from it.... Remove the Charcoal Canister to see if it is really heavy/full of raw fuel or loaded with fumes...( while driving the engine is suppose to pull fresh air through the Charcoal Canistor and burn the fumes in the engine) Any leak that is raw fuel or just fumes will cause the fuel smell...

Thanks Skip. As I'm replacing the sump (and oil) in a week I also completed an oil analysis which just came in. The oil is only 2100km old. The oil has 2% fuel dilution and a corresponding drop in oil viscosity which is now outside the range for a 5W-40 @ 100C at 12.14 cSt. Virgin sample reported 13.5 and the manufacture reports 14.2 Do you think the fuel smell and now the dilution in the engine oil might be potentially related? Documentation (previous owner) suggests all six injectors were serviced 3 years / 10,000km ago Previous oil samples did not report fuel dilution or significant viscosity drop

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 19950105

"Serviced" or replaced? Serviced means cleaned. That's great for flow, but will not fix leaking fuel injectors. If it were me I would replace the fuel injectors with new verified Bosch fuel injectors. While leaking injectors can cause additional fuel smell, they can also accelerate bore scoring which can reduce life of the engine dramatically.

POST 6Original post

I don't think the fuel in the oil or fuel injectors have anything to do with your fuel smell since you stated the smell is coming from the front of the car.... That is indicating two separate issues... ( not uncommon at all) so don't try to conflate the two, that can lead you down the wrong path...

POST 7Original post

I missed the fact that the smell is from the front. That definitely sounds like a full charcoal canister or a faulty vent valve like Skip said.

POST 8Original post

Your used oil analysis looks good except for the fuel dilution and lower viscosity ...This could be due to ageing 02 Sensors or Fuel Injectors.. I suggest you test the O2Sensors and also fuel trims and correct this issue first...Then correct the fuel smell but I think they are two separate issues...always treat them as separate issues until you have "proof" that they have a common cause...

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ie fuel dilution. I've got an idea. Since December (last oil change - all samples before fuel dilution was 0%) I've had access to PIWIS 3 (thanks to this forum). So I've been spending time in the car with the ignition on with the PIWIS connected. I'd then just go back into the house . Ie not start the car The ignition on would prime the fuel pump / fuel system and there would be pressure. The injectors may have leaked whilst been primed? I've pulled RKAT values and they're 0.7% and 0.78% bank 1/2 so that to me seems like during running the injectors are ok?

POST 10Original post

Injectors are wear items - they cannot be 'cleaned' just replace them at some point with nee Bosch as Skip said. I have heard of this before, pretty rare but the tank has a seal on the neck that can perish - not an available part it's moulded into the tank. Customer replaced the tank with a good used one and the fuel small went.

POST 11Original post

The biggest issue here is that he is not getting a code. This means from the gas tank to the gas cap the system is sealed per the emision requirement. The easiest way to check for a leak is to pull the fender liner and battery tray and smoke test the system. If there is an issue with the system u will find it. This is a good diagnostic test just to determine that the system is tight. As skip suggested the system may test properly and still have a component not function correctly like the charcol canister having fuel in it.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mechanic smoke tested and found nothing. Wonder if it would be worth leaving the fuel cap off and run the car (for how long?) to see if the system even throws an error for that. Wonder if it would be worth doing that.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 19954877

Did you ever solve this? I filled up my car yesterday and now am smelling fuel vapors. Took a look around and dont see any obvious liquid leaking, think Im going to start with taking a look at the charcoal canister.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20654513

It took a long time to track this down. In the end it was fuel seeping in/around the fuel filler's neck junction into the tank. To recreate the smell it needed to be a fairly full tank and you throw it around a corner or two. I ended up with a new fuel tank... and I think there was a cheaper answer but the mechanic kept at me about "Porsche Australia are seeing a lot of replacement tanks for 996s. They've done 5 this month...." I think the answer could have simple being a new gasket. $10,000 later. (Tank and 'while you're there pump....' ) Here is a photo that showed where it was escaping from Front underneath where you could see the fuel 'wetness' Old tank removed. That same location

POST 15Original post

I guess Australian cars have a different fuel tank from USA cars due to the " Right Hand Steering " ? That pic of the Tank looks quite different from what I remember....

POST 16Original post

Holly crap i had to do the math on that. Its $7k usd.......im in the wrong buisness.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20654563

Correct. Here's a fun fact. All LHD GT cars have 90L tanks. RHD are only 60L. Porsche just 'cut' through the tank (so to speak) for the steering rack. and the space on the other side is left void. They don't engineer a RHD tank

5.5K for the tank 2K for the pump plus labour (drop sub frame, R&R tank, install new pump etc..) plus GST / VAT / Sales Tax (10%) I think I got rinsed a little on labour... but not crazy.
