Suggestion · Original poster

I mentioned this to Dave at Wheel Enhancement and he concurred, saying that the 285/30 size wasn't a factory setting until 2002.

The acceleration doesn't seem to have been affected either, as I get to use my first and second gear a bit longer.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just put on 265/35/18 tires on the rear of my car for the first time....and I LOVE it. My shift points are all changed and it seems to feel like I get more use out of each gear now. I mentioned this to Dave at Wheel Enhancement and he concurred, saying that the 285/30 size wasn't a factory setting until 2002. This means that my car's gearing was tailored to the 265/35 size. And boy does it show. Has anyone else with an older 996 noticed this?

POST 2Original post

Glad to hear you say that - I have the 265s on my car - I just had my rear rims refinished and the guy said, "you know you can put 285/30s on those." I hadn't thought of the need, as the car feels great. Now I know I won't have to going forward!

POST 3Original post

I don't mean to discredit what you feel, but the typical difference in diameter between a 265/35 and a 285/30 is less than the difference in tread wear from new vs. 2/32". Also, the 265/35 is taller. Going from bald 285s to new 265s is going taller, so if there is any perceptible difference, the car should feel about 3% slower.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nope, not at all. The shift points are all different now, and it just seems more 'right' now. I agree, with the larger diameter I should lose some acceleration, but it also contributes to a higher top speed too (and possibly better mileage). Either way, it just feels better. The acceleration doesn't seem to have been affected either, as I get to use my first and second gear a bit longer.

POST 5Original post

285/30 rolling diameter is a little different for each brand of tire. I was just on TireRack checking out the specs for my coming wheel upgrade. When looking at tire specs, I was TOTALLY SHOCKED at how heavy the Goodyear F1 G3s are in 265/35 size! I couldn't believe it: 30lbs for the Goodyears, which are at least 5-6 pounds per tire heavier than a Michelin, and every other tire I looked at. I really want these tires, but I'm not a fan of adding so much rotational intertia- which is part of the reason I'm getting BBS wheels.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If those tires are really that much heavier, I would avoid them and get something else. That's a lot of extra unsprung weight.

POST 7Original post

This must be due to less tire weight as the rolling diameter differences don't explain what you're feeling.

POST 8Original post

That is very odd Paul. I went from 265/35 to 285/30 on my rears when I moved my MkI wheels (Sport Designs) to do track duty and added Carrera lightweights for DD duty and I notcied nothing. I ran the caluclations when I made the switch and the result was my 285 were 2.89% faster. Ad for the tires weights/rim weights, my new DD setup is almost 20# lighter total (all 4 combined).

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The Carrera five spoke wheels are super light, and you would be saving a lot of unsprung weight with them. I am going to go to the Carrera III wheels next year. As for my experience, it's really the change in how the gearing and shift points feel.

POST 10Original post

I guess I don't follow how the gearing would be affected. But you are right, the lightweights have seriously reduced unsprung weight. I should probably use them for the track!
