Cat-less cars are supposedly not street legal in the US, unless the car is so old it ran on leaded gas when new.
Leading evidence: 'Run on leaded gas' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check /ims)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Other things being equal of course (PPI results/bore check/IMS).

maybe I misunderstand but why would a car that is optioned to run with leaded fuel desirable?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Seen several threads about the X-51 option as it relates to building/rebuilding engines especially maximizing absolute performance. This thread is not about that.
Current owner of a 2004 40AE and love the engine. Its made me curious about maybe finding another 996 X-51 as I dont want to modify the 40AE away from stock. Not interested in engine mods, rather doing a build with suspension, exhaust, maybe some interior, etc.
If I manage to find a non-40AE with the X-51 option (understand they were rare), any sense of the price premium it would or should command? Other things being equal of course (PPI results/bore check/IMS).
Searching BaT results using X51 as a filter I found a vanishingly small number -- 7. All but one sold above $30K, and the one that sold for less was in 2019. I'd say figure on about $5K premium. That amount would go a long way towards beefing up a non-X51 motor...
They definitely don't come up for sale often...but periodically I do see them being sold privately without the seller realizing it has the X51 package so it's good to scour every possible listing if your serious. There were no 996.1's with the X51 package sold in North America when new due to emissions compliance. Your best bet is to scrutinize all 996.2 listings.
Bingo. I got one of these in my Targa. I have no documentation as I believe it was added after delivery at Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville. But has all the viewable X51 parts. Including this 😎
aluminum intake and baffles in the sump. Looking to sell it too.

No records from dealer. Carfax showed engine out at Brumos Porsche in 2004. I tracked down the salesman from Brumos who’s card was in owners manual on Facebook. He works at Porsche experience in Atlanta. He remembered the car and (for what’s it’s worth…) verified the original owner wanted to create a Gt Touring Targa.
Also PSE was added along with Aerokit.
It definitely sounds and feels different above 5500 rpm, in a good way. I ‘think’ I have the Power kit. I’m sure an FSI engine is more durable. But I’m happy with what I have, and I got that going for me 😎
you can search me on here to see more. 73k miles. Lots of interior carbon. 😎
Ive personally never seen a non 40 Anniversary X51 996.2 pop up for sale in the USA. Ive heard the option was more common in ROW markets. I would rather purchase a unique spec 996.2 and source X51 equivalent aftermarket parts. The other issue with non anniversary X51 cars is you can't find one with an LSD. The LSD really changes the driving experience and is one of the reasons the 40 AE cars are very desirable non GT 911's
Just mod your AE or find a high mileage one to do what you want. I've done some mods with mine and couldn't enjoy it anymore than I do. Make it yours. Have fun. No telling if these will or won't be worth a pretty penny eventually, just enjoy it how you want it and don't worry about anything.
I sold my C4S X51 with a $115k window sticker on BAT, it brought $54k with 95k miles. I had never seen another C4S like it and it was mint. If you get lucky you can find a used car dealer that doesn't know about it, just look for the intake manifold.
They are out there, but not very common!

If you can find a 996 with option M150, this may be a better option than the X51. I don't know if these show up in the US though, even in RoW markets it is rare.
Sorry.. maybe I misunderstand but why would a car that is optioned to run with leaded fuel desirable? I suppose it would make more power since no cats.. but living with that sounds awful.
Interesting. I agree, I dont think M150 would really be useful at all. Lead was a knock inhibitor long ago, but the same motor with no cats wont have much difference, not with modern OE high efficiency units.
The M150 allows the car to run on Premium 98 unleaded and doesn't utilise O2 sensors It allows the DME to run in open-closed loop control. The key is that it
does not have cats out of the factory!
So a not-insignificant weight reduction over the extreme rear of the car, marginally improved handling, allowing maximum exhaust flow with a sharper throttle response, faster rev matching, unleashing "free" horsepower and torque and, best of all, the raw sound of the flat six is realised again. Whilst the X51 adds bespoke rare parts to the 996, the M150 (which has the same power advantage more or less, especially if coupled with free flowing exhaust) is even simplier than a bog stock 996. You can also run leaded racing fuel in an M150 car if you so desire, although a DME tune would be needed to extract the full benefit. Lots of advantages to the M150 with no drawbacks, although it may depend on your local laws as to whether an M150 car is road legal. Here is Australia, they are.
Cat-less cars are supposedly not street legal in the US, unless the car is so old it ran on leaded gas when new.
Many people do run catless cars. I wouldn't; I can't stand the exhaust smell of uncatted cars.
It is the same here, unless the car was sold like that from factory, and the exhaust system is unmodified. And yes, the M150's do have a strong smell of petrol, which I don't mind.
