It'll be nice to have a nice high clearance and a car starter installed for those cold days because they all sleep outside.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

She may have, but it didn't help that she was stuck behind a line of 6 Pennsylvania drivers doing 30 mph in a 45mph zone.
Had some fun out in the snow, the car handles PERFECT !!
Lots of drifting as we made an ovel track in a large parking lot and could keep it sideways all the way around! some spin outs for fun and some "normal driving" too.
In Seattle it snows on average 1 time in 3 years, better enjoy it when its here. If the cars stay home I might go out later and get some daylight shots, these were pre-dawn.... Kids had a great time too!!!
I'm with you Ed - I was out in the snow Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Great stuff!!
Looking forward to tomorrow too. (6-10 inches in the forecast).
p.s. If you keep those seats, you should look for my heated GT3 seat thread...
Where are you located, I am in Bellevue. A solid 8 inches fell here. Big surprise! I might go out later, this morning pics were with about 3-4 inches.
Thanks for sharing
We are getting 6-10 inches of snow by tomorrow - my car is going nowhere!
I remember having to dig my 944 turbo out of the snow years ago, it was my DD in Chicago. I drove home 35 miles only to turn down my street and plow/pack snow under the front bumper and get stuck - a block from my driveway...
We have about six inch's here in Minnesota and I am taking mine out Saturday. I have a second set of wheels with Blizzak’s. It’s like a little Panzer.
Paul
Nice to meet you neighbor!
In this area when it snow's we like to find hills and watch drivers negotiate them. Today we saw about 6 cars get fairly bent up and sadly one was a Porsche Cayenne S. The drivers side took a couple hits, scrapes and bends. I felt sorry for the guy...
It became very icy on the hill later today and cars had plenty of problems. I put 4 chains on the suburban and helped a few of them out with another guy in a jeep
Here in San Diego we got about a foot in the hills 30 minutes east of us and it's should be cold enough to stay through the weekend... if they lift the chain requirement I'm going to sneak mine up there for a quick shot...

anybody ever told you to close the top when it snows??? Snow is some kind of frozen water and is not to good for your interior!! Just thought I let you know!
Boring....
Who needs awd or a C4 when you've got a 911?

LOL. I'm afraid mine doesn't come out to see the snow either (not that it snows much in DC) but, that's why I have a Grand Cherokee. I only have autocrossing pictures of my car and a few shots after I finished detailing it.
On a related note--snowing here in Stillwater, MN. Just pulling out from a shopping run and saw a black Audi R8 at the stopsign! Wow, nice looking car.
Seasons Greetings to all Porsche addicts!
Here are some old pictures, I just haven't taken many recently in Winter. Right now it's - 34 outside - bloody cold.
The picture I want to get and show off here would be the interesting vapor - exhaust "contrails" that you get when you gas it on the freeway at speed. You get this 8 foot "rooster tail" from the rear spoiler. I can see it in my rear view mirror, but would like to get someone to take a shot from the side. But I am not sure if any of my pals here wants to stand on the side of the road with a camera while I loop around to drive past him for a picture.
Thanks Meister Fahrer,
Those photo's are from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It went to -50 C last night with the wind chill. I almost forgot what that's like - it's been a few years since we had the real extreme low temps. My C4 with 150,000 Kms runs fine in the cold - so I am proud of my high mileage beast. Love this car for winter, and it's a great conversation starter that's for sure. "you drive that in winter?" everyone always says - so I like this thread topic.
I absolutely prefer driving my Porsche in winter - the speeds are slower, and it's easy to do the "Tokyo Drift" stuff without harming your rubber too much, or risking a bad crash. I wish they would run autocross in winter here.
I agree there should be more places to get out and drive in the winter for 2 reasons. (1) its FUN and like you say, slower (2) if more people understood what it felt like to slip a little, they would be much better drivers on the roads
In fast the opposite has become the rule here: go "practice" driving in some abandon parking lot, get yourself a big fat wreckless driving ticket????
I was lucky enough to get out in a nice lot before anyone was up this year. I had the whole lot, smooth, fluffy, slippery and extreamly well driven thanks to my Porsche. (as someone said "you got ***** driving that in the snow!") Its far more predictable than other cars.
VIDS - next time, I figured it out now!!! (the snow is much to deep, crunchy, Icy, bumpy, and torn up though to out in it now with the P-car)
The rain finally stopped here in So. CA for awhile so I thought I'd take her out to stretch her legs a bit... As part of my tribute to the sun I did a quick trip East and what do you know...
Yes, Virginia, it does snow in San Diego... This shot was taken on Mount Laguna, about 30 minutes east of home and at about 4,500 feet... When we flatlanders get rain, if it's cold enough, they get snow... and they got a lot of it this time around...
With that, I submit:

+1 this is a great mod, costs nothing but some time and looks WAY BETTER when done!
(well I did buy new bulbs for something like $15-20 silvers from xenonmods.com)
Tim,
Oooh... Great idea! I really like that - didn't know that could look so good! (Ed - thanks for the pics - the eye test [which looks better? A? or B?]) was really helpful)
Now... how do I do that? (The side markers were a piece of cake....) What's that part called? And where's the best source?
Thanks again!

Rudy,
No parts needed to remove the amber plastic! Just a little of your time. Now how cool is that? You may want to replace the amber bulbs with the silver coated bulbs.
This link has everything you need to know. You can click on the pics to enlarge them. Make sure you clink on the link within this link to read his instructions, because there are some good tips in there.
Amberectomy DIY
Uhmmm.... Phil, you are confusing the "amberectomy" with the "pumpkin harvest."
Some pre-face lift cars have an amber lens in the lower headlight assembly turn signal. This lens can be removed with a soldering iron after the headlight assembly has been removed from the car. Check out
ivangene's
pics #2 (before) & #3 (after).
I think in the future, you need to concentrate on resolving only the issues involving the color "green!"
<Tim thinks to himself> Wait until Wayne reads Phil's post! <hee hee>
OK, I'm an idiot. Pumpin harvest = DIM (did it myself). Amberectomy = NFW. Don't need that one!
Is there any way to block my post from Wayne's computer??
during the "operation" cover the hole with 3 layers of tin foil to avoid burning the edges. Use the soldering iron like a hot knife to CUT the lens. Start by making several holes (holes are easier to make than slicing) about 1/2 way up the lens, all the way around (its 3 sided) then slot the corners from the middle to the fathest away point. The lens should start to get loose and flop around. Take the needle nose pliers and pull off as much of the lower section (below your burned holes) as you can, the remaining 3 sided 1/2 will come out in one piece.
I have done this to 4 headlights now. The first took well over an hour because I spent 1/2 hour not understanding that the iron was supposed to cut the lens up and melt it into pieces. The other ones I did only took about 1/2 hour each (I have a wiener soldering iron, but too much heat seems worse than not enough as you can damage your light with too much heat)
I have to tell you, I love it and it really bothers me to see those amber lens in MKI lights since they can be removed and look so much better. There is NO OTHER AMBER on the car, why have it there????
GL with it, its a fun cold weather job and you wont even get dirty!! PLUS its basicly free!! (except new bulbs to make them really hot looking)
Tim,
Too cool! But strangely, I'm much more comfortable paying (or paying, plugging and playing) for things for the car then actually doing something myself (the downside of DIY is that there's no one to blame if it goes wrong other than the "y"...) But I might give this one a try...
The only thing missing from the link are the instructions for removing the headlight assembly from the car... Where is that to be found (on the truck I'd be unscrewing things until the part I wanted fell off... not on this car though)?
Thanks for the help!

About the NFW. I had originally typed something like "Phil, I hate to say this (not really) but you can not handle this mod." However, I decided that level of harshness should be reserved only for the Newbies, so I deleted it.
Only if you can intercept the 3 emails and 2 PM's I sent him!
Rudy,
Check your manual (OK this is a good excuse to use this emoticon ==>
)
for instructions on how to remove the headlights. You should have an "L" shaped tool in your tool pouch which is located trunk (probably inside the spare tire rim). The is the tool to unlock the headlights.
Oh yeah... A female friend of mine at work has a talking doll called "Mr. Wonderful" - when you squeeze his hand he says crap like "Gee Honey, I know you've had a long day, let me rub your feet", or "Is it okay if we just cuddle", or "No, those jeans don't make you look fat", or "Don't worry Honey, I'll take care of the dishes"... this is a no sh*tter... this doll has no less than 16 of these improbable phrases, the funniest one I think is "You're right dear, I don't know where I am - I'll just pull in over here and ask for directions"... which sort of falls within the family of RTFM...
But seeing how this is for my baby... I'll take the advice and run with it... As soon as I get up the nerve to do the surgery I'll post pictures (not likely anytime soon)...
Thanks again!

Headlights come out in less than 2 minutes... pull back the fake carpet in the trunk, pop off the rubber plug covering the access hole, insert tool and 1/4 turn... headlight is out
installing take special care to line it up and sort of "wiggle it" in place to ensure the connectors are all lined up, note... there is a bit of a hard twist on the wrench in both dirrections and a sort of loud sound when its done... you might think you broke something as its a bit un nerving. (or as I like to say "DE-UN-RE-Nerving- ish-ful-ed)
GL (when and if you go that way)
PS... if you want to send me your lights I will do the op and return them for free!! That way you can yell at someone and fell all warm and cozy inside
Ed,
Perfect! Much better then reading the manual (no offense Tim)... especially the part about the loud sound... that step would be key for me.
I did go through the links that Tim posted... looks easy enough... I suppose I could practice by playing that old "Operation" game ("Remove Funny Bone")... I don't have a lot of confidence in my "fine motor skills" but I suppose the fine for screwing this modification up is $500 or so to replace the whole assembly...
I do appreciate the offer, but I really don't get warm and cozy yelling at anyone... the warm and cozy comes from the safety net of paying a professional so that he can fix the problem at no additional charge if there's a screw up...
Anyway, I'll give it a shot (it took me a couple of days to get up the nerve to change the side markers and that turned out to really be a no-brainer... it will probably take at least that to do this one...)
Thanks for the instructions and the tips! Much better reading than the manual (getting to the manual is a whole other thread...)

Okay, I'm here... I couldn't ignore Tim's emails and PMs any longer.
You know I'm just disappointed that Phil would think that I would pick on him. I don't remember the last time I picked on him for making an ignorant comment with regard to his car.... then again, I think he has made so many at this point that they all blend into one long comment on cruise control (Phil, that's the green light on your dash)
Oh Phil, we need to get driving again. The good news was that only last night my wife mentioned organizing a drive in the Spring, so not all hope is lost.
yesterday I opened my garage door and showed the snow to my car.
I told it that if it was bad I'd send it outside.
... and you all know that I'm mean enough to do it - after all, look in the photo and you'll see that I already have my 3 year old clearing snow.
If I remember right (having a 9 and 10 year old) it was fairly easy to get them interested in doing that work... but hard to KEEP them interested... that's your challenge.
Nice pic, thanks for sharing
Thanks - glad you liked it.
I figured that to be the case. He's a good kid and loves to help out. Hopefully we can keep things that way.
We actually bought him the snow shovel for christmas and he loved using it (he previously had been asking to use our shovels).
He wasn't a big fan of snow last year - but he did really well yesterday when we were outside taking down the christmas lights. By the time we were done he had cleared most of the driveway all by himself.
I couldn't resist snapping some photos and when I saw that photo I had to post.
Thanks! I had fun snapping photos, but it was pretty cold out there yesterday.
...now where's Phil's snow photo? (no, not the one that you made for him!)
I'm glad someone resurrected this thread... this forum is a perfect pre-occupation while waiting for the hometown boys to spank the Stillers this afternoon...
My car is going in for her face lift this afternoon, so I thought I'd perform the surgery while they're working on the bumper cover... I found the correct bulbs for the side markers, but can't find a part number (for either Phillips or Sylvania) for the turn signals... Anyone have these part numbers handy? (the silver bulbs that look white, then amber when they're on...) By the by... I've come to discover that there is a MY 2001 996 and a MY 2001 1/2 (half) 996... What's the difference and how do I know which one I have?
That's a great picture Well 'ard - can't wait to show my 15 y.o... (that should fix his whining about taking out the trash...) WRT the snow shovels... I remember back in the day, that snow shovels made great snow sleds as well...
Thanks,
Rudy

yeah, I'm sitting there watching the Giants/Eagles game... I'm hoping for another Eagles loss.
Sorry to disappoint, but the Steelers will probably will later.
(and that's coming from a Patriots fan!)
We'll see... I'm watching the Giants/Eagles too and pulling for Philly... I'd sure like to see the Giants lose just to shut up all of the NY transplants around here... (Yes, some of us still do have hard feelings for Eli...)
As far as my Bolts... every time they've been to Pittsburgh in the post-season they were the underdogs... and we're 2-0 playing there in January...

I'm not a manning fan at all (either of them), but I hate Eagles fans more...you should hear them crowing all the time about their "great" (but dismally untalented and notoriously choking) football team. If they hadn't made the play-offs, then McNab and Andy Reid would finally be history and they could get around to admitting how bad they are and realize that they'll never win a Superbowl while those two are with the team.
As for the Steelers/Chargers matchup - The chargers have just been inconsistent this season that I can't see them beating the Steelers considering how consistent they have been.
What are you smoking? I'm a Bucs fan, and we happily beat the Eagles in the NFC championship game on our way to winning the SuperBowl in 2002, but McNabb and Reid have gone to the NFC Championship game 5 (is it 6 now?) times in 10 seasons. That is a fantastic statistic.
By the way, living as I do in NYC and following the Jets and Giants sentimentally, I have been calling for Eli Manning's removal since he was drafted. Way overrated and such a whiny nonchalant loser. Doesn't the guy have any heart or guts at all? He just stands their like a deer in the headlights without every attempting to find new ways to get the job done. I mean, where are the field photos that he should be studying? Why isn't he talking with his fellow players? It's as though he just wants to get out of the cold and go home...win or lose. Does he have any trade value?
I agree on Manning totally. I've never been a big fan of either Manning. It must be a family trait, as Peyton was also a whiner until he got a Superbowl and finally shut up. I at least have respect for Peyton's ability. Eli blew it for me with his childish behavior with regard to being drafted by the Chargers.
As for the Eagles , they were 9-6 for the season (remember that Dallas was 9-7!) - a lousy record that was lucky to get them into the playoffs - especially considering far better teams with better records did not make it to the play-offs! They got lucky! The only respectable teams that Philadelphia beat were the Giants and Dallas. I've seen too many games where they are just outright terrible in their play. They honestly do not deserve a good reputation. They usually make it to the play-offs not by their efforts, but by the other team falling on their sword. This weekend even the most loyal Eagles fans were saying that the Eagles didn't win the game, but the Giants simply decided to lose the game.
The Eagles may have made it to the play-offs on a regular basis, but the choke every time in the most bone-headed manner. There is no prize for second place. No-one remembers the loser of the Superbowl. The have never won a Superbowl and have choked on each of the two occasions that they have made it there - the last time when they played the Patriots McNab admitted to losing it under the pressure, even resulting in him throwing up on the midfield line. It was a lousy game and it was an embarrassment for my team to beat them - there's no honor in beating a bad team.
The sooner the Eagles get out of the playoffs, the better - then Eagles fans can get back to doing what they do best, which is whining about how they don't get any respect and that they deserve to do better, despite their inability to play well on a consistent basis. The only way to change this is to change the coach and the quarterback - both need to go and Eagles fans know it.
Just my $0.02.
didnt read that post (or the last few) but just a question.... is that football talk spattered all over my really cool thread?
Awe go ahead, <thinking> JERK
(just kidding so you know.......)
Nice pic!
We had an ice/sleet storm here in Dallas last night. The roads are very slick. It's so bad I won't even drive my POS Honda in it. Now THAT'S bad!
Around 5:30 this A.M. I decided to test the roads out in my ML. My neihborhood was fine but the 4 mile single lane road to get to the HWY was pure Ice. I had to place the two passenger side tires in the snow to make it back up the 30 degree hill to get back into my neighborhood. I wish I had my camera with me..
Um, now you've really hurt my feelings. I'll be glad to go driving in the spring. I think I'll take my kid's Mazda 3 on the route - just watch the side of your car, Wayne. That car has a tendency to "turn in" when least expected...
Wayne, \
First off...... where the hell have you been??? I was worried sick! I didn't know if you were still alive! You didn't call, you didn't PM..... oh wait...... sorry, I'm starting to sound just like my wife!!!
Make sure you set up your Spring drive on a weekend Phil is NOT on call, so he can't use that excuse again!
Nice to see you missed me.
I've been here, but to be honest I didn't have much to say.
The combination of too many stressful things happening on the home front and too many threads here with depressed people whining about the pitiful prices of our cars, I decided that I had nothing productive to say. It's far more uplifting to surf for ****.
If you have been following the business news you will have seen my company featured every day this week - either for our announced layoffs or the ongoing saga of being acquired.... all fun stuff.
...as for the spring drive... I haven't mentally committed to that yet. I have to see if our infant is up for sitting in the back of the car (or if I can get a navigator). To be honest I also ended the year so POed with the politics of our local PCA section that I'm still annoyed enough that if I were to do a drive I wouldn't invite any of them.
Amen... Nobody in So Cal is a fan either... not that we didn't make out in the deal, but when he thought he was going to "languish" in San Diego... geez... Like I said, we made out on the deal, but the NFL should have forced him to come or sit out, otherwise the draft and draft order is pointless...

Loved it and would really like to do the route again. Terrific route and incredible turnout. The gorgeous day didn't hurt either. Keep me posted if you're planning on the tour again this Spring.
Phil, I'll bet it was a nostalgic drive for you..... you got to see many of the original covered bridge structures that you helped build in your late teens and early 20's! Did you guys use wooden dowels or cut nails to build those structures?
I see you guys were having fun this afternoon! Must have been Phil's day off.
We are lucky enough that our county has more covered bridges than any other in the US... they're a real joy to see... it's just a pity that the teeenagers don't appreciate them and keep trying to burn them down.
I spoke with my wife about it this evening, so we might try for mid-April. I was also asked by a colleague today when we were doing the next drive, so I guess we might end up getting enough interest to make this happen... plus he drives his red turbo even less than Phil - it's really pitiful, so I have to give him an excuse to get the car out.
Wayne, come on!!! I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night!! It's ****in' impossible to drive a car less than Phil drives his C4S!
We should change Phil's model designation from C4S to S4E, which means.... Sits 4 Ever!
Good one!
Actually, I had to go back up to see what yo were referring to. I didn't realize it had posted twice. I went back and deleted the duplicate post.
I have noticed this happening quite frequently lately to a lot of guys in the Forums. Sometimes the connectivity to Rennlist is extremely slow, almost like I dropped internet connection. I guess that Rennlist has the hiccups?
True, but he's close... he has an '02 Turbo (a beautiful red on chipped to 500hp) and it has less than 15,000 miles on it. Pretty sad. He drives it only on the weekend (as he commutes by train into the city each day) and most of the time the kids get in the way of him driving it on weekends... depressing.
Well Phil, let's see!
'02 Turbo has 15,000 miles and is 7 years old, which equals 2,143 miles per year.
Your car is an '04 which makes it 5 years old and has what 3,700 miles on it? Uhmm... near as I can calculate it that is ..... OMG....740 mikes per year.
Like I said earlier "It's ****in' impossible to drive a car less than Phil drives his C4S!"
I rest my case!
Yes, I hate to admit it you're right.
I'm not sure which is a bigger travesty - buying a (then) new Turbo and not driving it, or Phil's pitiful 740 miles/year.
Don't get me started about your brother. You have told me about him in the past, and I think he is crazier than you are! That should make you feel better!
Phil, let's put that in perspective. When I had my 996, I had 740 fun-filled miles every 2.5 WEEKS!
Your "frequency quotient" is like being married to Jessica Simpson and only "hitting it" once per quarter. Maybe that isn't a good analogy, 'cuz at your age, you would probably be happy to be able to get it up 4 times per year!
Actually, no, I was joking then too.
Phil lives down the road from me. We know each other pretty well. Phil, Tim and I are good buddies that are always giving each other grief.
you know... I feel like Homer J Simpson.....
"Sooooo... if he's not your brother but you sayyyy he isss your brother..... then.... DOH!"
confused but coming around REALLY SLOWLY - LOL
(note to self, erase that memory I was trying SOOOO hard NOT to forget)
Ed, I have never met either Wayne or Phil in person, but I did have a phone conversation with Phil about 3 weeks ago. I was surprised that he wanted to talk to me after all of the crap I give him! Both of them are great guys!
I feel death coming on already.
I would love it if you lived closer. We could make for a dangerous trio.
I miss seeing Phil over the winter when he baby is stasis.
The OEM battery is only a year old - I figure if I wait til next year, my battery will sulfate, and Wayne can come rescue me again and I can shell out another $200 for a new battery. Just think Wayne, we can make it a biannual tradition! You can even get to pick the lunch place! My treat of course.
On a serious note, what is involved in disconnecting a battery? Are there special things to know and/or do once it is reconnected?
(Thinking I will try and get some info out of all this battery stuff Phil has gone thru)
Ed,
Make sure you have the stereo code for your car. If you don't have it hte stereo won't work and it will be a headache to get the code and activate the stereo. On the '03 & '04 (maybe the '02) the stereo code is stored in the DME so it will reactivate by itself.
Well, if you have the car on a trickle charger, or hook it up once a week, then you won't have an issue. The problem with Phil is that his advanced age means that senility frequently gets the better of him and he can't even remember where he put his keys, nevermind that he has to hook up the car for a charge.
Wayne, good point. Does his Audi TT have a START button? I figure it must because that is the only way he could remember how to start his DD each morning!
Your wife already has a room reserved in the south wing . Then to add insult to injury, she is going to drive the C4S to come and visit you every day. Can you say...... DAILY DRIVER?
Fun, fun, fun in the snow... leave house at 5am, hike 3 runs at Berthoud Pass, CO, then get to the office by 9-sh.

OK Guys, we have been realy lame on taking pictures.... so since its that time of year again, I found this thread and hope to get some new snow pics.....
All you garage queens can take pics of your cars looking at snow, those of you that drive in the bad weather, lets see some pics (For the NW crowd, rainy day pics might have to be substituted)
Yeah, they're okay as long as the temperature is above freezing and you take it easy until the tires have warmed up.
Sadly, they've now coated the roads with salt, so Im guessing thee car will be pretty much put to sleep for a couple of months.
Seattle decided to use salt this year too... we had "fog" the other day and the powers to be pushed the "panic" button and covered the roads with salt just to be on the "safe side"
I hate this city sometimes.......
if/when we actually get snow (like flakes, not even ground coverage) the news breaks in with "storm warnings" and stay tuned for our special "How to survive a winter storm" special 4 hour broadcast....
We even now have daily "wind chill factors" on the news so we all know how cold it "feels" GEEZ, its 40 degrees with gusts to 5 mph.... it "feels like" 31 which is BELOW FREEZING !!!
ridiculous on SO many levels....
we even name all of our storms so we can recall them year after year and remind the people how bad it was when "winter blast 2008" hit Seattle
Yeah, same as here - the media is populated with idiots. I just ignore them.
Sadly, it's hard to ignore the piles of salt all over the roads, that usually calls an end to the driving season for me. I'm hoping that I might get an odd day here or there before the end of the year, but that's wildly optimistic... If I don't get anything before thre New Year I'll fill up the tank and over-inflate the tires and call it a year.

Just finished putting my snow tires on.
No snow here on Cape Cod, Yet!!
As I may be tempted to take a run or two this winter, I have a ride set aside just for my winter driving, and I don't worry about getting stuck in the lane where the snow plow had left its trail. In fact with this little toy I don't worry about too much at all! I love driving this thing in Winter, Sumer, Fall and Spring. And much like the Porsche I am always getting comments about this little toy! (If you know anything about them then you know that there were only 35 made and only 28 released to the public.)
So enjoy my winter ride and if you see me pass and you are stuck, fee free to wave me down, I would be happy to help!!!!
It is a tad bit Slower then the 996, But I get more people stopping and asking about it then I do my Porsche? Oddly enough the number one question I get from people regarding the Porsche is "What kind of car is that?" Very strange?
On last friday, -1C ( 30F ):
Now we have -17C ( 1F ). Yesterday was warmer, -15, I was out with the car, works perfectly and runs nicely with winter tires too. I've also installed an Eberspcher heater to get it warmed also out of home.
Both cabin and the engine, heats & pumps the cooland and drives the car's own blower. Eberspcher Hydronic B5W S, remote controlled.
US dealer
60N24E, about.
Yup, big hype.
Yesterday they were saying that the snow would start late evening and continue until Sunday morning and that we would get 12-18 inches.
I got out of bed this morning and nada. They were still saying 12-18", but now it would start getting bad around 11:30am - white out conditions. We cancelled a christmas party for the kids.
We didn't even get half an inch before 2pm. It didn't even start coming down at a reasonable rate until 4pm.
They're still saying 12-15" but it will now be over by 10pm.
They're a bunch of f@#$ing idiots. I don't normally pay much attention to them and their magic 8 ball, but this time they really have excelled.
All day the tv stations had uninterrupted coverage of the much hyped and mostly non-existent "storm of the century". Ahem. Feel stupid yet? No, I didn't think so.
They claim that Philly got 23". I say claim because they also reported that my area got 12-15" and in reality we got 9"
It was a non-event that was particularly annoying because of their insistence that we would get more, even as the snow was coming down and it was obvious that there was no way we were going to get the snowfall that they were claiming.
Man what must I be doing wrong. I've had several SCs over the years...Scary as hell in the snow. It snowed here in Roseville, CA last week and the 996 was okay but I didn't push it much at all. Had a blast in my Sierra 4wd truck. Guess I need to grow a set?
C4CRNA,
tires were all season. I guess in California that means either dry or rain cause both cars would transition from wicked understeer to snap oversteer. Not to fun with my kids in the car and on a tight, steep, switchbacked road. Having written that, I'm a native Californian with next to zero snow experience other than the odd bad weather day up to the slopes. Would always see folks with ski racks on their 911s. With cables on my cars it got way better traction in rear than front by FAR. I know these babies must be good. Read Vic Elfords book and he did quite well in old school 911s in the Monte Carlo Rally Etc.
In the Philly suburbs, they forecast 10-20". We got 22". FIRE THOSE BASTARDS!
By any standard, this storm was huge for our area. There have been plenty of occasions where the local weatherdorks (one in particular, in a bow tie) get it really wrong and cause a panic for nothing. This storm was most certainly not one of those cases.
Guybrush, what color is that?
I left my car outside just so I could take a pic for you guys... It was about 15" here in southern MA. It looks like it only goes to the middle of the wheel, but that's because the wind is blowing from the other side.
Those are big hawaiian snow flakes. Well it is cold. Got down to low 70's maybe high 60's recently. No bridge to the mainland so I'm missing the fun of driving across lawns inadvertently.
Mabuhay, the color is Vesuvio Metallic. It was factory colour in 1999. At first I did not really like it but now I think it is cool. It is dark grey with some brownish purple in it.
I want to see some more snow pictures to remind me of creeping along in fresh snow playing the game of snow building up in front of the tires if I breath on the brakes making life a view of the dynamics of gravity and sliding here there and everywhere into lawns trying to get out of the neighborhood. I did kind of enjoy the doughnuts going down I-5 in Oregon compliments of the snow. More snow falling so I'm sure there's more to come.
Not my car but some worry about snow? Worried about temps?
These guys are rallying in the snow with the top down in a classic 356.
No salt probably.

Awful camera phone pic, but I had to move the Turbo out in the snow while I fried a turkey on Christmas Eve in the garage. It was sunny and in the 70's just the day before! That's Dallas weather for ya.
///Michael
Once you go fried, you'll never go back. Unless you like to make gravy from turkey drippings or like to stuff a turkey with stuffing (you can't do either frying).
30 min for the peanut oil to reach 350, and 45 min for a 13lb bird (3.5min/lb at 325 degrees). What you get is a crispy skin and a juicy turkey that stays juicy long after. I'm saving some breast meat for a buddy and it's still relatively juicy after 2-3 days sitting in the fridge.
I used injectable marinade from Tony Chachere and I also season the skin with cajun seasoning from Tony Chachere.
The only catch is being very careful as frying a turkey can end up in a fire disaster. You have to measure the correct amount of oil to use, monitor oil temp, and make sure the turkey is dry and free from water as much as possible before slowly lowering it in the fryer. What I did, fry a turkey in the garage, is really a no-no because of the fire hazzard. Turkey fryers are not UL listed because of that. Search YouTube for videos of what can happen if you don't have all your ducks in a row.
The leftover peanut oil will still be good for at least a couple of weeks so I may fry some french fries to "clean up" the oil then fry some chickens the same way.
///Michael
You know it must make some people feel real bad seing a porsche with 4 wheel drive just crusie by with no problems. I don't think some would understand its 4 wheel but eh. I've watched some youtube video of C4's and other flying in the snow. For non porschers it must break a lot of hearts seeing the porsche do its thing.
Idiots on radio and TV creating hype
note temp of ?? 500?? (before flames)
and I doubt the flames are normal when using oil to deepfry otherwise all the fastfood places have been making frenchfries all wrong!
Yeah, if the oil is burning, then it's probably not a good idea to fry a turkey at that point, LOL.
I was thinking more along the lines of this:
Here's a video from UL demonstrating the potential fire hazzards:
Ed, if you send me a self-addressed stamped envelope, then next time I fry a bird, I'll send you a sample.

Overfilling and temp control.... just like anyother cooking...
My wife insists on covering every pot UNTIL it boils over 6 or 7 times onto the stove
now for something differant
Adding a quick post to pop this back on top, those of you with awesome snow pics.... lets add them over here.... its been a long time thread, good one to keep around (plus I started it
)
Well, the temperatures hit the low 40's today - the roads were dry and salt free, so my baby came out for it's first drive of the year.... whoo-hoo - gotta love spring and the low rumble of my flat-6.
Apologies for the crappy cellphone photo.
... Phil is spinning in his grave
It was so nice to fire her up and put my foot down... the car hasn't been started since November, so I was getting really impatient for a drive.... the bad part was driving home from my racquetball game after work and getting stuck behind a POS Honda... that happened to be driven by my wife
Nice, Wayne! Glad you could get her out and about today.
Don't be too harsh on your wife. She probably had the gas pedal in the Honda floored...... don't ask me how I know!
She may have, but it didn't help that she was stuck behind a line of 6 Pennsylvania drivers doing 30 mph in a 45mph zone.
If there was a clear line available to overtake I would have done so in a really noisy, fast, and thoroughly enjoyable fashion - it's nice to at least have that option when I drive the Porsche... hard to do so in the Acura, as it's as responsive as a dead squirrel.
Don't do it - just got back from stellar conditions at K-Mart. Best I've seen in a while. It's been a long time since I've had to walk
down
to the stairs on the deck of KBL! Everything was superb.
Although didn't have the P-car. Drove the uberwagon (A6).
Just got back in Kittery at 3:45 this afternoon...2 days of sun and blue sky, great snow conditions and very few people on the slopes. Have you skied south mtn at Loon? The rain started in Manchester coming home.
Awesome - glad that you had a good time.
I've skied most of Loon - with the exception of the double black diamonds and the more difficult Black diamonds - my skills were not up to those when we lived in Mass.... now that we don't live in MA and don't get to ski as much I'm not sure that I'd be up to them now either.
Given the choice I'd go to Sugarloaf or Sunday River, but I can't handle the drive from PA.
OK guys who have not haanded over your family jewels to the little woman, lets get some snow pics!!
We dont have snow yet but its cold, wet, rainy and windy....perfect conditions for driving a car designed to handle the worst mother nature has to offer - I had a wonderful ride in again today (like everyday) and have a beautiful Porsche to thank for the huge smile on my face dispite the foul weather.... I know there are others out there doing the same because I followed a 993 C4 for a few miles today... exchanged a friedly "howdy" wave and our separate ways we went....
Something sexy about those wide body cars! (too bad they mess em up with AWD
)
Well this is the cleanest my car's ever been.
3 day snow camping trip in Yosemite. This is Badger pass for anyone familiar with the area...and for the record the car was on summer tires and it was FINE!
And Ed, you know you wish you had AWD. Feast your eyes on some sexy lines!
Great pic! I drove my 996 off and on the first winter I owned it on summer tires, and I had no issues. But that year, I didn't drive in the snow. Now with 4 Blizzaks it is a lot of fun, plus I get to use my Porsche.
So the reason I drove the car with summer tires in the snow was because I had chains I thought I'd put on. I didn't realize that fitting chains to a 295 size tire is pretty much impossible. After struggling for 30 minutes, I drove up to the entry booth(in the middle of a caravan of SUV's), stared the guy in the eye and said "I have awd, I'll be fine" and that was that.
I'm curious, has anyone succeeded getting chains on the rear wheels???
I didn't buy chains since I've got proper winter tires.
I'm still amazed that you were able to drive in snow like that with summer rubber. My car wouldn't have moved an inch in that. I guess not all summer tires are the same...
Well, we've just had a ton of snow here in Calgary, and here's a picture of my car this morning - best winter car I've ever driven for sure! I realize my cellphone picture is a little blurry, but I think it sums up well how cold and bleak things were this morning at 7:30 am!
[QUOTE=ivangene;8064375]AWE MAN!! - That's the type a pic I am looking for!!!!
My car looked like that several times last year, in the parking lot at work.
I just never remembered to bring my camera to work.
I'll try to do better this year!
This video is of the second session of the day, video wasn't working for the first session but you can see the snow on the buildings and the tire walls. I was on R-comp tires but they heated up just fine. Actually had some really quick laps... I figure a few extra HP from the cold air.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0-yD79m-7k
I drive the car year round but I think I'll get a 4x4 this year for the bad days. It'll be nice to have a nice high clearance and a car starter installed for those cold days because they all sleep outside.
I was just (re)adjusting the front wheel bearings Tuesday night and realized my winter tires are getting pretty worn....been tire shopping - its always a tough choice as to which brand/model/size
I told my indy that I was looking and I think they are going to source me some.... its good to have someone you trust help with these type of decisions - I am heading there this morning to take some pics of a wicked motor build.... I will post on the 911 board, you gotta see this thing!!
Marc... You running with all seasons on the pepper? Or dedicated snows, thinking of running snows on the X5, with all this snow early in the season it might just be worth it.
The snows I had were toast so I put Conti DWS tires on the 19"s
Pretty damn good for an all season, been in the snow here and in western NY with no issues.
Went skiing at Loon on Wed and Thurs, one pic of my clean 911 before leaving on Tues. afternoon, and a second pic Wed am at Loon after driving the last 40 miles or so in the snow, and then waking up to some light fresh powder covering my Porsche.
Nice to be able to drive my 996 all year, makes me appreciate the more I drive it.
A few iPhone pics this morning while I was out playing in the snow. I still chuckle at the looks I get driving this car in foul weather. They really stare when I put the top down.
So I'm curious, what is the significance of putting the Nurburgring sticker on? Have you driven the car on the 'ring? I see so many cars these days with that sticker.
I was driving in the snow last night, and a pickup truck slid off the road in front of me. I went around him, then pulled over and got out to check on him. He was able to back out of the snow bank he hit, but he seemed surprised about the car I was driving.
(I could also tell exactly what he did wrong... it was a curve, he touched the brakes, front wheels locked up and he started sliding straight, so his instinct was to press the brakes harder. He slid right off the road in a straight line.)
nice Van!
a number of years ago while riding in the passenger seat of my brothers VW camper van, we were on a snowy/icy curvy narrow road. Came up over a little rise and into a turn, he locked up the fronts.. I immediately turned to see the panic on his face - yelled "LET GO OF THE BRAKE" - then again and again louder and louder.....we went off the road and into a ditch (on my side) - I turned to him and said, why didnt you let go of the brakes!!! He says "if I wouold have, we would have crashed"
well that logic is tough to argue with huh
-
happens that a buddy with a 4x4 was following us (who also drove on the same section of road but not only had to deal with the icy turn, but a sliding Vanagon n front of him - and DIDNT CRASH) pulled us out of the ditch...the van would not roll... we figured we broke something, and after several minutes of checking realized my brother bent the brakes pedal pressing it so hard that it was hanging up on the body (the pedal goes thru the floor to a pivot point under the body) with some effort we got it to clear
All I could think is "Man good thing you pushed the brakes so hard or we would have crashed"
these cars are designed based on the ring.... prob the most demanding circuit in the world..... this engine test simulates the ring.

you wont see many GT Cars in the snow as they are not Galvanized (No Rust Proffing from Factory) not a good idea with the Salt...
here is me :P not the best shots but heyy its snowing!
The 997 GT3 is definitely galvanized...I'd be shocked to learn that the 996 GT3 wasn't...I seriously doubt they'd include a 10-year unlimited mile rust warranty on the GT3 RS if it wasn't galvanized.
+1 on the galvanized.
"An important aspect of this coupe is the standard safety equipment which includes a fully galvanized high strength steel body"
http://press.porsche.com/vehicles/11...ifications.pdf
http://www.pacificporsche.com/Porsche/911%20GT3/
http://press.porsche.com/motorsport/...ase.php?id=661
Fact checking is a wonderful thing.
i was told that when the 997.1 GT3 just came out... its possible the 997.2 is Galvanized as you have provided Info up there... But i was told that the 996 and 997.1 GT Cars were not Galvanized...
The GT cars do not have undercoating, and the rust perforation warranty is shortened significantly, though still existent. I believe all 911s have been galvanized since the early 70s and all Porsches starting at some point in the 80s (the 924 was only partially galvanized for some time).
My 40th and Sneaky Pete's '99 Aero wearing snow shoes.
Also my first experience with Griots waterless car wash. Too bad the melting snow made a mess of both of our cars.
It was pretty cool meeting my first RL member.
Haha. In time ill change that too. Spending my little bits of free time on getting it autox ready for this spring. Hope to see u at an autocross or our local cars n coffee this summer which gets together at that mcallisters.

OMG I would rather drive the Porsche than anything else ni the snow.... its like a snow-mobile....anyone comes close just drive out of their way so they can crash in peace!!
(that said the Burb will be going to work today
)
I'm glad to see you drive the ol' car in the snow...Those Nokians should do just fine; I know mine would have been done fine in that weather. Apparently, I'm missing all the snowy Seattle weather...I'm in Australia appreciating summer conditions...but I'll be back this Sunday.
We got ~8 inches of snow on Sunday, and I was a minor celebrity at work on Monday. Half the people didn't show because of the "storm", and the other half asked me, "Did you drive the PORSCHE in today?!?!" Yes sir I did!
No pics, though, lo siento....
Well...its that time of year - so here is my revival for the season. Fall is about over for most of us and time for Winter Pics...
be they covered in the garage or drifting snowbanks, in the ski resort parting lot or ? ? ? ?
POST THEM UP !!
Yeah, but do you mean it like... "Wow. That's cool. That dude DRIVES his car like it's meant to be driven"
or
"Wow. What a freakin' redneck, driving a Porsche with a ski rack on it."
I get both!
stickin with WOW!
I love seeing Porsche's at the ski resort parking lot!!
the main thing is you are using it...and not stuffing a board inside against the leather...so kuddo's!
your car can probably do more than you think it can...check out this Pelican Member...he drives his!!
(has 7 others but only drives this one...the other are ? for show ? )

My Massachusetts Porsche is my 550 Boxster S Anniv. model that I ordered and bought new. What makes you think there will be a "next guy"? I still love it and have no plans to sell it. I can't stand the idea of Road Salt eating it from the inside out.
we switched last year to salt here too...the stupid thing is that in Seattle the rain will wash away the snow in 24-48 hours so why are we salting the roads??
i agree, that it will destroy a car...just bustin yur chops a tad...all in good humor
Oh no problem, I meant the reply in jest as well. (hence the humorous icon)
When I only lived in MA, I used to keep it indoors when the roads were messy (salted) but I loved it when it would rain and wash off the roads. Then I'd take it out again.
Now I solved it by living in CA during the winter so no problem.
Tired of the Subaru already?
Oh, to the others--a little road grime and salt doesn't bother me, but driving boring cars while I have a Porsche in the garage sure does. The sooner I wear this one out, the sooner I get an even better one.
My son drove the Subaru on that day!
It's actually a great snow car. We've driven it up to the ski resorts several times.
FWIW, this road grime gave me a good excuse to wash and wax the 996. It looks much better now.
love these snow pics, but if your CAR has never been to the nordschleife, you shouldn't have a Ring' sticker on your car.
sorry. that sticker is a badge of honor, like most track stickers are.
i have driven the ring personally, so i have a ring sticker on my helmet. not my car.
Unfortunately I'll be out of town for Eiskana. I think it would have been fun. I drove through Georgetown today and there were lots of cars out on the lake.
Where's the Ring sticker? Did I miss that one?
Edit: I scrolled back far enough to find it...
started snowing here in NJ. had to go out take some pics and do some power sliding. unfortunately only I was awake, so no one to take pics of me getting sideways.
here is a cool pic i took
video that made me love my car:
You Tube
yes i know, i need a drop...massive at that.
no, no they dont. i tried to drive in the snow a few days ago and couldnt go over 20 without spinning out. It had nothing to do with driving badly, car just would spin out randomly while going straight. it really sucked!!!! the only reason i drove my baby in the snow was because i was hanging out with this girl. turned out, i almost wrecked my car. it sucked!!!!
Nice aurora borealis shot - we don't get that down here. Nor much snow. I was up skiing the other day and thought of the 'snow thread", thought I better take a pic ... perfect day.

PIAA ION YELLOW, i have had them now for 7 years on the car and still strong!!! Knock on wood!
And they definatly help in the Rain, Wet Roads, Fog and Snow
Nokya is also good, however "Life" is hit and miss.... i have Nokya Yellows on both my VW and GF's Kia... on the Jetta they are 15 months Strong, on the Passat they were 12 Months strong before one died and on the Kia it only last 2-3 Months before one died... So i guess with PIAA you get what you pay for
Wow that's cold
Hey Pete - how'd you manage to get a MkII gauge cluster fitted into a Mk1 996...is it just plug and play?
Also i noticed you switched PSM Off - is it better in those snowy conditions?
Thanks
No, it's not p'n'p. All started with turbo's engine that runs ME7.8...which needs mkII gauge cluster and HVAC...and ABS/PSM unit from a 4WD car...and some other stuff...like rewiring.
It's more fun.
