So, if you get a flat in the front, you would have a problem and be unable to use the spare.

Hi, I was wondering if the 996 standard spare tire for NB (mine is a 99) would fit on top of a set of girodisc rotors with oem calipers. I'd like to upgrade fronts but not at the expense of giving up the possibility of utilizing the spare tire. It would be for street use only.
The 17" spare will not fit over the Giro disc rotors in the front.
However, they will fit over the rears.
This is only a problem when you get a flat on a Rear tire, since you are supposed to put the spare on the Front, then move the Front tire to the Rear; as per the manual. I learned this the hard way after getting a flat tire at the Track and had to figure out how to get home.
I was able to limp-along with the spare placed on the Rear. I did this for about 50 highway miles and survived. I did not go over 45-50 miles per hour and was very careful about bumps, turns and potholes. I was concerned about the thin spare and weight of the engine and had a friend follow me for a few miles. It felt OK and my friend said it looked OK (no bulging, bouncing, etc), so I kept going. It was a Sunday, with few choices for an instant tire purchase, so I went home, then took the car to a tire store the next day.
IMHO - the Giro Disc rotors are worth the "risk" due to the performance benefits at the track - less heat and better modulation. However, for daily driving or even "spirited" mountain driving, the stock rotors do just fine.
I am not sure about how the brakes will feel with just the front brakes getting the larger rotors.
Perhaps, someone else can comment to how this would affect the balance of the brakes.
To confirm, the spare will not fit over the front Giro Disc rotors. The spare will fit over the rear Giro Disc rotors.
So, if you get a flat in the front, you would have a problem and be unable to use the spare.
It is very close and you might be able to use a spacer. (I may look more into testing this option...)
If you have a flat in the rear, you will be able to use the spare, but not as per the manual.
You will have to use the spare on the rear (not put the "good" front on the rear, with the spare going on the front as per the manual).
