I had the IMS bearing replaced this last week by Akers in Seattle.

Suggestion
You could use the audio output directly from the ipad, add a aux input to the becker, and power the ipad completely separately.

Suggestion
An aftermarket radio with good Apple integration (Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS for example) will allow you to 1) Power and charge the ipad directly from the head unit, 2) use the lightning USB connector to feed a digital audio signal to the head unit, 3) control music either from the head unit or the ipad.
Use line level outputs of an aftermarket deck and connect

I'm not familiar with the pre-MOST bose amp, but I assume you can use the line level outputs of an aftermarket deck and connect to your existing amp/speaker setup if you don't want to upgrade them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally getting around to posting a couple pics of my 02 996 which I picked up a week ago. Really happy with the car and I'm glad I used to this forum to learn all about the 996 and take my time with the purchase. I had the IMS bearing replaced this last week by Akers in Seattle. The original bearing was fine but I'm glad I replaced it and it was worth the money for me. Thanks to everyone for their help, now onto the driving!
I bought my 02 996 this but unfortunately, traded my 928 in. I still have the 951 beast. 996 is nice to drive and the wife actually likes it. Dealer replaced IMS, RMS clutch, belts, shocks and a few other items for me. Car is great so far. And Silver
Congrats on the very nice looking new toy! If you haven't done so yet, join us in the PNW region of the PCA. Nice interior. My typical suggestion is to get rid of the cassette holder (cassette holder!?!) in the dash and replace it with an inexpensive cubby tray. The cassette holder just pulls out. You can get the cubby tray at bumperplugs.com or suncoastporsche.
Congrats on the new ride! (go peek at it again in the garage. It's ok, we won't tell anyone.)
ps. Love the side skirts!
Thanks everyone for the welcome and comments on the car. In terms of mods, I do want to get rid of the cassette holder and ash tray. I'm likely going to put in an iPad mini but I'm debating on if I keep the CDR-220 or put in something else. I find the Bose stereo creates a lot of vibration coming from the rear bass units and I'm wondering if that's normal. I'll hunt around the forums.
Feel free to PM if you want any more info on
how I did mine
.
If you used the stock Becker CDR-220, it would be pretty loosely integrated with the iPad. You could use the audio output directly from the ipad, add a aux input to the becker, and power the ipad completely separately. Not the best setup for sound quality, and you can't control anything but volume with the radio controls.
Plus the audio quality of the Becker head units is pretty marginal.

Congradulations and good luck, great to be aware of the potential problems and fixes for our vehicles, this site can be invaluable when it comes to that, that being sed it's also important to take some of the threads with a "grain of salt" the gloom and doom reported about IMS and the M96 engines are greatly over blown.im not sure of your situation, wether or not you needed this repair(was there a leak etc?)true you now can relax knowing the repair is complete.i guess my point is you may have jumped the gun based on the things you have red here about the infamous IMS issues,I can tell you that your going to love your new wheels! These cars are built very well and with the proper maintenance you will be enjoying for a long time. Now good luck and try not to catch the Porsche upgrade fever! That a slippery slope $$$$$$$$ hahaha.......
Yes, I've been drooling over your iPad Mini install and will likely do this soon. That was an epic post! Thx for the input on tradeoffs between CDR-220 and aftermarket options.
