you can bypass the 500 payment by getting a pre-buyers check from a us porsche dealership and asking for a letter stating no-recalls, cost me $270 and i new exactly how the car was no over-revs, no faults etc.

It sounds as though there have been reams of people who have used the $10 hack with the litronic headlights with no ill effects - some even install it only long enough to pass the RIV inspection and then remove it.

Does anyone know if there is a negative long-term effect from using the "hack"?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
My local Porsche dealer told me that if I was to import a 03 C4S, the DRL's cannot be programmed. There would have to be some sort of module installed which would be roughly 300$
Is this true?
Once in Canada I would have to pay $500 for the Importation Quality Assurance Process, and then any addition mods required/needed, example: DRL's.

Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Alin
Just do a search under daytime hack and you will find a couple $10 solutions to the problem. They involve taps to the fusebox and very little in the way of supplies. One of the posts even has pictures.
See if you can get a US Porsche dealer who has service history on the car to issue the "no recall" letter. RIV will want a printout of the service summary to accompany the letter. That will save you the $500 Cdn Dealer fee. You'll still need a Cdn safety. The DRL's are a no brainer but get an Indie to do it. Dealers got the name Stealers from this kind of crap.
There's lots of threads on this. Do a search on the Cdn RL forum
Good luck
When I go to see the car, I'll have it inspected by the local Porsche dealer there.... I will do my best to get the "No Recall" Letter during that whole ordeal!
Thanks for the tip! I'll search for threads on the Canadian RL forum for sure!
I searched the threads for "importing" in the Canadian RL forum and to be honest, not much recent info came up. Mainly all older posts/threads....
But I think I understand the process pretty well.... I just want to benefit from all the tricks and ways to avoid the local stealer here once all is said and done.
Here's a link to the DRL hack - works the same on the 986 and 996. About $10 in parts.
996/986 DRL Hack
BTW, the $500 is a cash grab from the Porsche dealers. If you get the Recall Clearance letter from a dealer in the US, you won't need to pay it all. PM me if you have any questions about the importation process!
Thanks for the Hack link!
I'll try my best to get it from a Porsche dealer once I go for my inspection. If all goes well, I'll avoid my Porsche dealer here forever lol!
Yes, I've had plenty of experience with Markup Motors from my days in Ottawa. The techs were pretty good, but the service advisors have always been quite a handful (esp. Les).
LOL I know man, trust me!
But I know a good mechanic there which can help me if needed. This is why I will probably stay away from them as much as possible....
DRL hack cost me actaully less than $10, child restraint anchor was placed on front seat for inspection at Canadain tire (the anchor cost $8 I believe and can be returned for refund after).
Recall Clearance letter recieved through a member on Rennlist.
Local dealer wanted $1200 + cost of changing DRL's.
For some reason I can't find the fuse taps... Does anyone know where I can get these?
What does a child restraint anchor look like? not sure if I would need that....

I was never able to find them. Take the car to AutoImport on Woodward and Jason can do it for you with a jumper wire. They took care of the inspection for me at the Canadian Tire nearby including the child retraint anchor.
Did you pay 200$ at canadian tire?
Because when I chose the Ottawa location 2 Canadian tire's came up at one VW restoration shop in Manotik. If i go to the VW guy, he doesn't charge anything... I just need to pass the inspection.
I'll try going to the guy at AutoImport for the DRL's... Where can I buy a child restraint anchor?
Canadian Tire will include it during the RIV inspection.
Just ask AutoImport to help you with the RIV. Canadian Tire has the exclusive contract with RIV and AutoImport set it all up for me.
I've had a great experience with AutoImport! I got my alignment done there for my previous car. I will also go to them for my next alignment once I slap on new tires.
Thanks, I will check them out shortly for the RIV inspection!
I am the soon-to-be owner of a 2003 C4S and I intend to be hacking it with Yoseif's $10 hack. It sounds as though there have been reams of people who have used the $10 hack with the litronic headlights with no ill effects - some even install it only long enough to pass the RIV inspection and then remove it. I don't believe this should have any long-term ill effects.
I once modified the headlight harness on a 2004 Toyota Sienna to upgrade the headlights to HIDs. In doing this, as I'm a bit of an electrical nut, I discovered that the "feed" wire for normal halogen headlights and HIDs carries pretty much the same voltage, etc. (I metered it on my workbench) The difference with the HIDs, of course, is that the current gets amplified/modified by the ballast and that is why the voltage is so high at the headlight itself (and thus those yellow warning stickers all over the headlights!)
I'll be going up to Active Electronics in the next few days to find the necessary supplies.
Congrats with the purchase!
You'll find all you need at a "the source" store. Install will take less than 15 minutes.
I removed my jumpers after inspection.
Good luck!
I just did Yoseif's DRL hack, and hot damn, it works exactly as advertised! I have a 2003 C4S with bi-xenons. It is "true" DRL, in that only the main headlights come on, nothing else (i.e. no tail or fog lights, and the gauges don't light up or anything like that either).
Does anyone know if there is a negative long-term effect from using the "hack"? If I leave it on too long, will it fry anything important? Or is it basically harmless? If someone could let me know, that would be great. Otherwise, I will follow the comments of one of the other posters here and just remove it once I get my Canadian "papers".
Thanks!
I did the hack as well, but just for the inspection and then I took it out.... I'm pretty sure it won't fry anything!
I like your Avatar! Have you seen the episode when they went to Romania!! Pretty nice! They found the "best road ever" there...
Thanks for the feedback! Seems like most people just leave it in for the inspection, and then pull it. I looked at the electrical chart / fuse map, and it seems that the jumped fuse (heated seats) is of similar amperage as the headlights.
Yes, I did see that episode of Top Gear, where they drove that road through the mountains that goes nowhere, very cool!
As an aside here is a dirt cheap way of doing the DRL hack with stuff you probably have at home already.

My heated seat fuse was 25A and the one jumped to was 15A
