Suggestion

Question is if you have the Track Drain on your UAOS which is an important upgrade if you want to run extra oil in your engine, which is always a very good idea if you do plan on AutoX and HPDE.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First - The car - 1999 C2, Manual, Coupe - 134k Miles. UAOS, LN IMS, etc. I recently stumbled across a pretty sweet deal on an X51 baffle for my oil pan, and was curious if I should upgrade to the M97 Oil Return Tube while I have the sump dropped: 997-107-016-00. I have heard on a few videos that it works better than the M96 oil pickup tube and is an upgrade. Note - I'm not adding the .5 spacer to my sump - this X51 baffle is not that deeper style. I don't really plan on tracking the car. I do plan on maybe some AutoX, and potentially an HPDE day. I mostly am a weekend canyon carver. Let me know if this is worthwhile while I'm in there, or if I should just not mess with the factory M96 OEM oil return tube. Thanks,

POST 2Original post

The X51 baffle will help some with oil movement. The 997 tube is cheap. Skip did research and couldn’t find a statistical difference in deaeration 996 to 997 tube. His conclusion was Porsche wouldn’t spend a € on R&D if there wasn’t an improvement to be had. My take is the 997 tubes are more efficient in increasing flow. I also suspect the newer design working for multiple models enticed Porsche. New oil formulations over the last 25 years significantly reduce aeration and probably made any benefit of the old swirl pots moot.

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 20652977

On FaceBook Lee Jenkins (Hartech UK) keeps the 996 swirl pots but alters them by cutting something on them. However I didn't quite understand what or why. I installed the FVD x.51 and changed the returns to the 997 ones.

POST 4Original post

I upgraded to the 997 oil return tubes and speaking as an engineer, I think the new returns are much better. I tried to upgrade to the new X51 baffle but for some reason, the holes didn't line up so I returned it. Speaking again as an engineer, I don't think the new baffle makes any difference unless you are running low on oil, which may be the point.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 20653469

They are cut above the side exit, through the cilindrical main body of it. Combined with their own sump, the cut is just above the horizontal baffle plate, so the returned oil is dumped on top of it and returns to the sump itself through cut-outs that are shut using the OEM rubber flaps, attached from below.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 20652951

Looks like you already made 2 most important upgrades w/ the UAOS and LN IMSB. Question is if you have the Track Drain on your UAOS which is an important upgrade if you want to run extra oil in your engine, which is always a very good idea if you do plan on AutoX and HPDE. Its also a very good idea to test your blowby (see Skips Blow By thread). If your blowby is good, you can run up to an extra 1-2 quarts of oil over full using the UAOS w/track drain. That's 8.5 qts + 2 qts = 10.5 quarts. This extra oil helps to solve for oil pressure instability and starvation. Regarding your sump, if you are running the factory sump, I would strongly suggest the X51 baffle and while you are in there, upgrade to the 997 oil return tube. if you get hooked on AutoX and HPDE, you can eventually upgrade the sump to a 2qt deep sump or the industrial strength UIDS to further improve the oiling system and mitigate starvation under high G. Including the UAOST, you will be able to run 11.5 - 12.5 qts of oil in total, which the M96 loves on the track. Don't forget to refresh your water pump if you havent already.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20654886

Yes - I did get the track-drain option on my UAOS. And yes, I did just recently replace my water pump. Thanks for the info. I think given all of this, and the price of the part - I might as well while I'm in there.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 20654729

So, are you saying the baffle/swirl port is basically cut off the tube, and it just dumps directly into the sump..? Sounds interesting and right. Any pics of the modified tubes..?

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 20652977

Skip wrote to me and said the 997 Oil Return Tubes are about the same flow as the 996 ones. The big difference is the 996 Oil Return tubes are made in such a way that debris from chain guilds, little plastic parts or whatever, can get stuck inside and clog them up. Not ideal for oil flow, yes? So yes, get the 997 tubes, they are only about $28-$30 ea. If you get the UAOS with Grack Drain, you can also run a little bit more oil - Skip said 10.3 qts. I'd probably just leave it at 10 qts and call it good. YMMV

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 20655093

No pics but I've drawn the cut lines on the pic below. Hartech would have either had to cut the swirl pots or cut a hole in their horizontal baffle plate to make them work together. Obviously they chose to cut the pots, as it speeds up draining. I won't edit my post further above but the side exit is NOT cut off and as such wrote it incorrectly.
