Suggestion

I think if you can heat these things in the oven to 200 degrees and replace/repair leaky lenses that you might be able to heat it up, pluck it apart, and try a fix before shelling out $500.

Suggestion

I'd sort of like to replace the passenger side headlight but not at nearly $1000 cost to me to do so, and the Boxster just has plain old headlights, not litronics or bi-xenon.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My headlamps are burned yellow. If you seen this you know what I am talking about. I have been searching ebay for a reasonal priced set for months. But they all seem to have the same issue when you look really close. Are they all like this? They are driving me nuts with how yellow burned mine are.

POST 2Original post

No. That is usually someone who has put the wrong bulbs in them (too high a wattage) and partially melted the plastic. I have two sets. Both are from 1999s, neither are burned. One has 12K miles on them and the other 80K miles.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

what wattage are to be in them? I just bought new bulbs and they were some new "brighter" bulb... are they going to make them worse?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you. I will make sure I get max 55 watters.

POST 6Original post

In re. "burned yellow" description, I'm not sure what this really means. If, and I say "if", they are hazing due to UV exposure (very common with cars that spend a lot of time in the sun and/or near the ocean), this is a repairable problem. But "if" they have become discolored on the inside (!), that's a new one on me...have never seen that problem before. relinuca

POST 7Original post

It's a more common problem in Canada, where the headlights do duty as daytime running lights. Looks like hell. When I bought my car, I immediately swapped in the Litronic retrofit. I have a vague recollection that someone, somewhere out there on the internets actually restored a set of halogens that were burned-in like that...

POST 8Original post

When halogen bulbs are used as DRL with reduced voltage the glass encapsulation will quickly degrade, even melt, yes, MELT, GLASS. But I suspect you do not mean teh bulb encapsulation. ddd

POST 9Original post

It's the glass cover in front of the bulb but behind the plastic outer cover that's becoming yellowed. Mine has the same issue, but it's relatively subtle. I also tend to run with my lights on during the day. Too many drivers out there don't seem to see the car unless I have the lights on.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 7976011

My 02 Boxster's passenger side headlight is yellow and the light is not as bright from that side as it is from the driver's side headlight, which is not yellow. The driver's side was replaced a year ago last Feb. after my car was stopped at a light and hit from behind. The impact (among other things) caused the driver's side headlight to pop out and cracked the plastic. Expensive to replace with new and my body shop contacts tell me that good salvage units hard to come by. The shop tried to buy a salvage headlight in "good" condition but the seller wanted the money up front before he'd ship the headlight. The body shop owner told me he doesn't buy parts that way and a new one was ordered from the dealer. (Other driver's insurance paid for the headlight.) I'd sort of like to replace the passenger side headlight but not at nearly $1000 cost to me to do so, and the Boxster just has plain old headlights, not litronics or bi-xenon. Even though the passenger side light is yellowed and the light dimmer the lighting is still quite good, though not as good as it was and not nearly as good as my Turbo with its bi-xenon lights. I've decided to live with the condition. Lastly, I've never run anything but stock/factory light bulbs in the car. The car does see alot of use (235K miles worth), night time as well as daytime, and it does sit outside alot in direct sun. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 11Original post

Miner are burnt as well. The outer lense is burnt as well. I was told I'd have the change the entire casing to make it better. I don't like the look but the cost to change is big enough to make me think twice.

I see a set, New on ebay for a g-wiz.. But I am still squirming at that. Yes yes yes.. I am always knocking the cheap bastards.. But I only need these to see at night.

POST 14Original post

Where did the leaves go on the tree? Is it dead? Oh and I don't have those burn marks....interesting.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Macster.. So its not aftermkt bulbs then. Its just the headlights suck

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah for once an american car co did somethign better than the German.... On my Old Fiero and corvette the light assemblies came apart and you could replace any part of it.. This sucker is sealed up tight.

POST 18Original post

Kyle, From that pic it looks like a "standard" 7" or 5" American bulb in the housing?? Mine has the litronics and looks different. With replacements costing $$$$. I think if you can heat these things in the oven to 200 degrees and replace/repair leaky lenses that you might be able to heat it up, pluck it apart, and try a fix before shelling out $500.
