Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone! I'm on the verge of buffing out my C4S. If the paint thickness is around 100 um, how much of it do I take off? OR, does someone know how thick the clearcoat is and how thick the paint is on a 2004 C4S? I.e. - I definitely don't want to be buffing out all the clear coat. That would really be NOT GOOD.

POST 2Original post

If you are doing this yourself, it's a bit scarey that you are asking here. I would not use a C4S to practice or experiment on. If this is your first attempt, try it on a beater first. It's real easy to go thru the clear coat, even the color coat around and near the edges. Best left to a pro detailer, a very pro detailer.

Hard questions to answer without knowing what buffer, which pads and what polish you plan on using. It would be impossible to know how much clear is left on YOUR car without actually measuring the paint thickness. Also, are you trying to get any deep scratches out or just do a good paint cleaning?...I'd be careful about going to aggressively after deep scratches...that could lead to going thru the clear...

It IS my beater... The buffer, pad and polish have nothing to do with my question. And I did measure the paint thickness. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post... I meant to say that if I measured the paint thickness to be 100 um (um = micrometers with a paint meter) already, how much do I take off? Do I take off 10 um to bring it down to 90 um? Or more? Obviously, it depends how deep the scratches are. But somewhere before and I can't find it, someone posted that x um was the base coat and y um was the clear coat. I.e. - if x was 50 um then I still have 5 um of clear coat that I can buff out. Thanks in advance for any help!

Focus on the results you want. Are there deep scratches or simply minor marring of the surface? Most professionals will tell you that they use the least aggressive methods possible that will achieve the results they want. I don't know of any detailers (professional or otherwise) who can tell you definitively how much paint they are taking off in any given process.
