Even if the car passes your inspection and your wife's inspection you still should have the car PPI'd with overrev counts read out and run some background check on it (CarFax) to see if anything scary comes up.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys I came across a '01 TT in Rennslist Classified dated 5/8/10 for $32K w/65K miles. Its being sold by Fred at Valley European an independent Porsche shop in Van Nuys Calif. Is this guy reputable? He says it runs and drives excellent. Is this worth looking at? Or does it smell like a dog needing a bath?
Fred, thanks I will run a CarFax for prior owners and history. Seems to good to be true, but with due diligence maybe I will find a good buy or good riddance.
Never knew a car salesman to say anything but the car runs and drives excellent.
If you're in the market for a Turbo go look, if the car's convenient, you have the time, etc.
Give the car a good going over. The pics suck and one can't tell anything.
Never hurts to gain more experience evaluating a used car.
Suspect the car has a story. Find it. I challenge you. If not a bad collision repair, car may be a flood car, theft recovery, or has engine/drivetrain issues. Have salesman give you a 15 minute (at least) test ride in mixed driving, then repeat loop as test driver to give engine time to act up.
If you're worried about you're lack of self-control leave the checkbook at home.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Bringing my wife (she thinks I'm crazy) to jump on this. She doesn't know motors but knows upholstery and paint condition and overall shape/care of the car. Me, all I think about is 415 hp and all wheel drive with a hydraulic tail at 75mph. Plus all of your comments have settled me down to think this over before we talk $$$.
There were lots of deals like that last summer, at the bottom of the economic cycle, it you were watching
If we double dip this summer there will be more, many more
If you are set on the turbo...just be sure it passes the sniff test. A thorough PPI, your visit in person, a n extended test drive...and some lady luck. Big bucks when things go wrong. GL
+1 on big bucks... every job cost 2-3x due to the amount of items blocking access that need to be removed.
not to say a Turbo isnt a great car, just have to have the means to keep it going and make sure to start with a well maintained example
Easy there. 415hp and all wheel drive (it is on demand awd not full time and besides under anything but the most marginal traction conditions it won't kick in) and hydraulic tail (which can cost $2600 or thereabouts if it doesn't work right to make it work right (worst case)) are nice but you want a good platform.
(I don't think I've ever caused the awd to kick on. Given how expensive the tires are -- especially the rear ones -- I'm not about to spin them just to experience awd for a few short moments.)
The engine can run upwards of $25K to replace and a sick Tip can run nearly $10K.
Even if the car passes your inspection and your wife's inspection you still should have the car PPI'd with overrev counts read out and run some background check on it (CarFax) to see if anything scary comes up. Even if the CarFax comes back "clean" doesn't mean the car's completely 100% clean only that CarFax could find no record of anything negative. Not every bad thing a car undergoes is reported to a database searched by CarFax.
Once you have a CarFax report and know where the car spent some time call dealers in the area and with the VIN see if they'll share what services/work they did on the car. Stick to the car, don't try to ask any questions about who owned the car. My experience is this spooks dealerships. Remember you're buying the car not the previous owners.
If your research turns up something negative, a deal killer negative, don't be afraid to walk away. There's always another car.
Sincerely,
Macster.
NO WAY !
I am sure I would burn the tires off the car... not beating it, but driving it. I woould not "smoke them" in the litteral term, but I would smoke them in the overall term.....I like heavy breaking and hard accelleration w/o a bunch of spinning smoke and squeeling BS - still the tires would be loose once in a while so I knew where those points were
Note to self: dont get a turbo !
Guys, I saw the TT today. No bad on the outside (body straight, paint in good condition, no obvious damage). I got the car up on a hoist (no sweating, oil leaks except RT Turbo housing was sweating and no structual damage). But the interior was not kept up. Just worn and dirty. I couldn't understand how someone could show a car in that condition. This bothered me as I wondered what else is wrong with the car. Problems noted: Airbag and seatbelt light on; Rt door window regulator issue as window would not close tight; slight 'clunking' when manual shifting hard (possible Tip Trans mount); also Rt/Ft tire worn but Lt/Ft in with ok wear (possible alignment issue): finally CarFax with clean title with verification of low miles but with 2 accidents. But the engine purred and pulled strong! The price is enticing but I don't want a 30K project car. So I passed. Thanks everyone for your help. Kenny
Oh, you can get a Turbo, but if you drive it like that you should own a tire store.
Even if one does not smoke the tires all the time, but just drives the car rather agressively that kind of driving will have the rear tires bald in no time, maybe within 5K miles.
I'm shooting for 20K miles but the way they look if I do the tires will be on their wear bars.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Just because someone bought the car for $30K (if that's what was paid -- are you sure the car sold for this amount?) doesn't make the price he paid reasonable.
You have to trust/have faith in your research and your numbers.
There are plenty of cars. You'll find the right one for you.
Sincerely,
Macster.
