My dash guage ran 'cooler' than ever before, needle never touched the 0 but stayed pointed at the right side of 8.What a great suggestion that Chao and Ed had on using the digital readout on the HVAC unit.

I used a torx 20 on the air ducts and condensor fasteners, everything else was done using a phillips head screw driver, other than the 4 plastic turn buttons for the plastic trim piece under the hood.

i used a wide paintbrush that was cut down to try and brush out the dirt.

I would also check the coolant reservoir and make sure it is filled close to max.

I tried to run from 78-82 mph(indicated speed/4-5mph high) on the highways, and the temps outside had a low of 56F to 71F, and my coolant temp readings had a low(this am) of 72C=161.6F to a high of 92C=197.6.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I finally decided to remove the front bumper cover, to see how much debris had been accumulating between my condensors and radiators, and to check out the condition of the units, especially after 11 years of use. Who knows if this had ever been done prior to my ownership for the last 3 1/2 years? After removing the plastic air ducts I was shocked by the accumulation of leaves, butts, and lots of sandy, gravel...I measured 3 qts worth primarily leaves. Not much between the condensors and radiators. I vacuumed the surfaces of both and then started reassembly.
The only pain in the a$$ was loosening the fender liner and holding it back to access the single screw located below each pumkin. Other than that it should be easy to do again. I used a torx 20 on the air ducts and condensor fasteners, everything else was done using a phillips head screw driver, other than the 4 plastic turn buttons for the plastic trim piece under the hood. I raised the front end by driving up some wooded ramps(wedged shape) to gain some room. Anxious to see if my engine runs any cooler tomorrow...going to Conn., down and back.
It will make a big difference. I would also check the coolant reservoir and make sure it is filled close to max. I find that I get cooler temps with even an extra half pint of distilled water...
you can also get a digital readout on your coolant temp by press and holding the recirculate and the top (arrow up) button on the right side of the climate control panel for a few seconds. The left screen will change. Use the + key below that screen until the display reads 6c. then press the center vent button once for your coolant temperature. Go back to normal; press AUTO.
Damn Steve, you have been here long enough to know that you need to post pics! No pics means it never happened.
Wait another 11 years and clean them out again, but next time......
post the @#$%^&* pics!
Just drove my Porsche again to try your suggestion above. It read 77c which converts to 170.6 f. Will know beeter after tomorrows trip. Thanks for the info.
I did this last week. I got pics though! I apologize for the poor quality iPhone shots.
I didn't find quite the 3 qts. Barn996 did but it was plenty nasty in there including some glass, bugs, fairly large stones and cigarette butts. The last pic shows how much crud was in between the condenser and the radiator on the driver's side.
While I had it up in the air I did the transmission oil and the front differential too. I was amazed at how clean the fluid looked after 67K miles.
These are both easy maintenance items for anyone considering them.
actually it takes about 10 minutes to remove the bumper! Here's a nice video.

BTW- You don't have to pull the headlights. I had a couple bulbs to replace so I took mine out.
This is a must a do. I noticed the car running alot cooler from 8 to 0 now more at 8 and seems that it cools faster than before on the highways.

Well......gotta say you all inspired me to do the clean job today. Removing the bumper was cake except those pesky screws behind the wheel liner. Like others I found a bunch of crap. 5 butts and the remnant of what used to be a bird. While I had the bumper off I figured this was great time to reattach my splitter. Seems I'm scraping stuff more now since the X74 went on. And yes I cleaned up the tar and bug juice off the bumper before it went back on. All back together and feeling good about it!
I just did slightly over 400 mi. today, from southern Maine to Essex, Conn., left home with my wife at 7:40 am, one P stop, service, return home to Maine by 4 pm. My dash guage ran 'cooler' than ever before, needle never touched the 0 but stayed pointed at the right side of 8.What a great suggestion that Chao and Ed had on using the digital readout on the HVAC unit. Temps seemed to vary slightly based on actual outside temp, driving speed and traffic mix. I tried to run from 78-82 mph(indicated speed/4-5mph high) on the highways, and the temps outside had a low of 56F to 71F, and my coolant temp readings had a low(this am) of 72C=161.6F to a high of 92C=197.6. Anyway, I loved spending several hours driving my 11 yr old 996-911, with its sensitive steering feedback, its very controlled handling and superb brakes...and I finally have OVER 50k miles now, 50,345mi.
WTG Steve - (and Pete)
the list of things you can access from the HVAC is located on that sticky "things to know" thread up top... there were a couple others I liked as well, but normally was on temp...OH, oil temp too I liked that one IIRC redridge posted all of them
Nice job Pete. I oly took me 3 1/2 yrs. to pop the front bumper and clean the accumulate junk. I like your headlight lens covers in yellow. Have you been pulled over yet ?
Thanks Ed and Steve! It was a easy DIY.
Here in Indiana as long as you don't use red or blue film on your headlights its legal. Even the Camaro cop didn't care...might be different when I go to WI in July for a DE at Road America ...as long as I don't drive at night!
In Indiana they look great. Next weekend I have a DE here...than a police escort with the P Club to a restaurant across the street from the Indy 500 track. The place is gonna be hoppin' for race weekend. The headlights will be on.
Wow, I think this could be the cause of a slight engine temp. rise in mine..Before mid of 80 deg. now north of it...
I will do that this week-end. Good job and thanks for sharing...
I think a slight reduction may result, but not a huge difference. It also helps reduce the chance of rusting/rotting the areas covered with leaves, butts, etc. that have been sitting there for years.
You can also use a pressure washer from the rear if you peel back the fender liner and blast all the heavy deposits off the radiators. If you have bent fins from rock, etc., you can take a small finish nail and straighten them out. Lots of work, but worth it if your summers are hot....
All these posts convinced me to undertake this job this past weekend.
Damn! Same results, lots of leaves, gravel, and everything else you can think of!
I've got a tiptronic so needed to clean out the third radiator also. Same thing but not quite as bad. More gravel in there than anything.
I'm kinda surprised that Porsche doesn't use some kind of screen to keep out the bigger pieces of rubbish. I'm assuming there was some logic to that thinking.
One of the benefits of removing the front bumper cover is that I could take off the small black plastic pieces and paint them using black bumper paint. Can't remember what the exact name is but you can get it at NAPA. Really makes the faded black plastic pieces look new.
It's infectious, but I really think it needs to become a routine preventative measure. Nice bike in your Avatar. Did you have any palm tree leaves or coconuts in your air ducts?
read this thread this morning, removed the bumper etc and cleaned everything when i got home tonight, took approx 2 hours total including cleaning all the plastic parts
very satisfying
Hi Gaspaser19.
Thanks for the pictures. I noticed you put your car on 4 jack stands. How did you do that? Did you jack at the engine block for the rear stands or at the cross-beam?
Would you mind to share with us your procedure of putting the car on 4 jack stands?
Thanks.
