Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

+1 to having replaced all 6 plugs without needing to remove anything more than the wheels and heat shields

I replaced the coil heat sheilds recently on my 996 and I kept the passenger bracket in place but unbolted the muffler from that bracket.

My guess is that the mechanic cut it, so he could get the bracket out of the way to replace the #4 spark plug.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I have been chasing a knock at the rear end. After going through the suspension, I started looking at other parts, and noticed one of my mufflers is "wiggly", and probably enough so that it could be knocking.
This is what I found:
I am pretty sure the part number is 996-111-127-62, and the parts catalogs show it having a bolt at the top. But as you can see, there is no top here. It is like it has been cut off. The other side is the same, but at least is solid.
Am I wrong? Is this correct?
PS the POs mechanic did some funny things (the rear sway bar was in upside down when I bought it). I have had this car for 10 years, and this is the first time this has become apparent.
Well, there is a reason why they cut it off. Wrong bracket? Broken bolts?
Can i get at the top bolts if i remove the bumper, mufflers, heat shields? Or do i have to drop the engine?
Is that the right side?
My guess is that the mechanic cut it, so he could get the bracket out of the way to replace the #4 spark plug.
I had to remove my right side muffler and drop the engine about 4" to get to my #4 plug (but I left the bracket intact).
I think it was going to be difficult to remove the bracket...
(even after I had removed all the stuff you mentioned)
Paul
Wow, I'm a newbie to the 996 and have only owned my C4S for less than a year. Prior to that, I owned an air cooled Carrera.
Paul - Is it true that the one must remove the right side muffler and drop the engine 4" to get to the #4 plug?! I know these cars are funky, but that seems extreme for plug replacement. Or was it for ease of access to the plug?
"I hear" it can be done...
as
@strathconaman
and
@cboxell
have said.
I couldn't.
I could get the lower coil bolt out, but not the upper, the coil or the plug, as there was only 2" between the top of the coil and the inside of the body.
There was NO WAY a 3" spark plug socket and a 6" extension was going in there...
Lowering the engine a few inches and removing the muffler, allowed me access above the muffler bracket.
Here is a video.

I Have those brackets for a 2002-2004 if ever you need. I know they come out to about 1000$ each from the dealer.
As others said, passenger bracket doesn't need to come out for plugs. I replaced the coil heat sheilds recently on my 996 and I kept the passenger bracket in place but unbolted the muffler from that bracket. It's tricky to get out and may require dropping engine a few inches.
