It has blue backlighting so I think changing all the lights to blue would look good.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On Ebay, they have a kit that coverts both the instrument cluster and the climate control lighting to either white or blue LED's. I am more interested in the blue lighting. Has anyone done this convertion and/or have any pictures? My only concern is that I have the stock radio and there is no way to convert it from the orange to blue lighting.

POST 2Original post

Darren (mitty) did it and hated it. Couldn't get the lighting levels even. I believe he undid it. Haven't seen him post for a while though.

Something just not right with blue LED in a P-Car.

I like the blue led lights in the new VW's. I don't have an aftermarket radio; stock Becker 220. But, I installed the new Sirius tuner (Streamer GTR) in my dash between the radio and the storage bin. It has blue backlighting so I think changing all the lights to blue would look good. My concerns with kit are: are the blue LED's that come in the kit bright enough and how hard is it to solder the LED's into the climate control unit? Fortunately, the instrument cluster doesn't require any soldering! I will post pics of my Sirius radio upgrade. It looks and works fantastic.

POST 10Original post

The lights are bright enough easy......and for like $20 just try it....it'll take you like 20-30 minutes and $20....

POST 11Original post

I also have done it and love it. I have an alpine unit which has 4 color illumination (one being blue) and looks great. I have the ones for the temp control unit but have not installed yet (due to the soldering involved), I will be sending it in soon ( the company/party selling them will do the work for about $80.00, hopefully they still do, since haven't checked with them for a few months). And as Newport said, only $20. and can return to oem within 30 min., just keep your originals.

POST 13Original post

wow...for the money, that doesn't seem like you'd have much to lose, esp if you can back off on the inst cluster lights so easily if it doesn't seem to work. I did a custom audio install about 2 months ago with an alpine head unit. I decided that I wanted features and flexibility over cosmetics, and since the latest models are now non-switchable colors (instead I have the bio-lite 3 line display on a single din) I'm stuck with a blue deck. Extremely happy with the system, but sometimes wish the colors were uniform. Can anyone tell me what search terms I can use to find it on Ebay? TIA

POST 15Original post

I like the stock color but I think it looks good if you have a matching head unit. To each his own.

POST 16Original post

There must be a way to hack the radio... it sure looks like it uses the same type of display...

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I talked with Becker Audio (the manufacturer of the factory radios) to get a price quote for them changing out the five small round buttons across the top of the faceplate since mine have begun to delaminate and they said they do it often for less then $100. I am sure that they could probably change out the LED backlighting while they are in there. Someone might want to call them if they are interested.

POST 18Original post

I know this is an old thread but I thought I should update it with some photos of the LEDs in white. Two bulbs in my instrument cluster (alternator and oil pressure gauges) were burnt out so I figured what the heck, might as well try swapping them out with LEDs while I have the cluster out. I must say they look pretty good but not as good as the ones on my Lexus RX330. Still, for $30 I think it is worth it. We'll see how long they last. White LEDs.jpg P.S. In case you're interested, the eBay seller's name is porscheleds.

POST 19Original post

it looks like you brightened the image. would like to know what it looks like naturally... can you take pics without post processing?

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 7098816

Sorry, I took the picture with my iPhone so the quality isn't that great. I didn't brighten it -- it just came out that way. Let me see if I can darken it in Photoshop and post another pic. Anyway, the rev meter needle is the brightest since it is right in between two of the big LED bulbs. The other needles are not as bright in comparison. The gauge faces are all pretty bright but again there are definitely "hot spots" by the 2 and 6 in the rev meter since that is where the two bigger LED bulbs are. I wish the lighting from the LEDs were more even like the standard bulbs but I guess that is a limitation of the LED design.

POST 21Original post

Alright, here you go. I darkened the image a bit to make it look more "natural." White LEDs 2.jpg
