Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently got a quote from a local locksmith for a key and chip for $140. Is it a good deal? I have no idea how the key will look like and if it will fit circuit board, but figured its a good price to have just in case key.

POST 2Original post

It's a great deal if the car is reprogrammed to accept the new chip. The dealer wants lots more.

Thats a great price if you mean a NEW key AND chip. Thats what I paid just to program my new key/chip that was $350 at the time. I had three different locksmiths try to code it before I gave up and went to the dealer. Fortunately none of them charged me since they couldnt program it. Ironically, the dealer told me they couldnt get it programmed and they wanted my car for a day to diagnose. I wasnt interested and left. Two days later, the one working key (which I used to leave the dealership with) stopped working and the new key has been working for over a year now. cant decide if Im going to try and have original programmed again or just buy another new key. best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Similar experience - auto locksmiths say they can program and replace but no joy - I know of one in SF who was able to do so for a colleague but they needed to remove car components to do it and it ended up being about the same price as at the dealer. So just be sure the key works before you hand over your hard earned cash in the transaction. I ended up at the dealer.

Thanks, I am curious, how does key stop working? the pill stops working with immobilizer or blade breaks? Or you meant the circuit board stopped working?

POST 6Original post

Since the OP is in FL, just send it to ECU Doctors to be sure. It will be more than $140 though.

POST 7Original post

$140 for a new laser cut key blade and a $2 pill/chip plus labor is just average cost......It will NOT come with a new Remote.... You can actually get the laser cut key for about $25 and the Pill/Chip is about $2, the rest is labor....

POST 8Original post

Good price. I use to make car keys and for a Porsche we would charge more, however the keys we made were cheap knock off keys that I would not have trusted long term.

POST 9Original post

Great price if it works. I had several key companies tell me that they could not program Porsche keys. So $715 later I had the dealer do it

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great news! It worked! So $145 was for key and chip. I also bought one key with shell of amazon and asked if he could do that too. To do his key and chip with my amazon key with chip would be $260, so I just asked him to cut my blade. So for his key and chip and for him to cut my blade, total was just $160. I confirmed everything is working. He also told me that if I did not have any keys, it would cost $800. I was surprised because I always thought that you'll need brand new module under the seat etc. He said that the module would have to removed and something would have to be send overseas or something, but it is doable. So if all keys are missing, $800 is not bad at all. The locksmith is out of downtown Orlando. Not sure if he'll give you same quote obviously, but their website is www.advanceautolocksmith.com
