I have most records, there were 2 PO's, the clutch (and RMS) was changed the day before I picked up the car.
Leading evidence: 'Replace day' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'issue right now' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check recall updates' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The car has been through 8 owners in close to 10 years - thats my only suspect issue right now.

Most of these title changes (other then first owner) appear to be dealers or auction houses.

It might have been leases but has me puzzled about why this car has changed hands so many times.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First post! Long time Porsche fan and hopefully soon to be owner.
Here's where I am at the moment.
I'm looking at a 1999 C2, Tiptronic. Miles = 74K. Looks in good shape on outside with minor wear on hand brake handle and drivers door sill. Also has a one minor curb rash (1/2' long by 1/4" wide) on left rear rim. Paint looks fine over all. Everything appears to be working. Tires look 50% on back and 75% on front.
It has nav sys, leather heated and powered seats (both), air, heated & powered mirrors, 4 air bags, sunroof, ABS, sheer silver ext/cardinal red int, cruise, 17" alloys, fog lights, tint (was a Florida car), rain sensor wipers, tilt, anti theft, keyless, traction control, power locks/windows and sport package.
From non-dealer - dealer and a two year powertrain warranty (How good it is may be suspect in todays chapter 11 era)
They want 25K (Canadian) but are willing to 'talk about the price'.
I have a PPI appointment on Thurs of this week at the local Porsche dealer that is costing me $260 for a two hour inspection. I'm bringing the carfax printout to the dealer for them to look at as well. The car has been through 8 owners in close to 10 years - thats my only suspect issue right now. Most of these title changes (other then first owner) appear to be dealers or auction houses. It passed through a dealer (The Collection) in Coral Gables TWICE, (which I don't get) and title changes in Florida and Las Vegas a few times each. It might have been leases but has me puzzled about why this car has changed hands so many times.
It appears to have been serviced regularly under warranty and carfax reports no accidents or any damage. Nothing reported such as engine or tranny changes. A company called 'Service Plan' appears to have been involved (after market warranty I guess) that lists a 'claim' for cooling system serviced (67k miles) and suspension serviced (69K Miles)
Car imported at 71875 Miles into Ontario and registered legally with a Porsche Canada check for recall updates that came back clean. Has good title here. Now has 73943 Miles on it. Downside is that car comes without maintenance records. I will ask dealer who is doing the PPI if they can see anything through their systems that stands out of the ordinary. I also want to see if all numbers match.
Would it be out of the ordinary if I asked them to take it for a little test drive or is that out of the norm? I've driven my brother-in-laws 911 targa but not this type of car.
How dependable is the "Tip"? I'm going to ask about what the cost of a 'ten year' service (anyone know?) and what it covers just to use as extra leverage with the selling dealer. They seem motivated to sell as they have had the car since Sept 08 and have a s**t load of other cars in their indoor showrrom - like a hundred of all higher end makes.
What is the opinion here on this car and is there anything else I have missed?
I'd like to say this is a great site and have learned a lot reading here and even if I don't buy this car - it will come in handy when I do buy one.
Do drive the car. A huge red flag are the 8 former owners for a 10 year old car.(I'm the 3rd owner on my 99' 996). I can't comment on the tip regarding durability, but I have really enjoyed my 2 1/2 year ownership of my 6 spd coupe. Be ready to offer less than asking price even if your PPI is good and you like this particular car. There are lots of 996s outhere to choose from. GL
Hello,
As a reference point, I bought this car:
http://www.crestautogroup.net/SoldVe...1-Carrera.aspx
For $22,500.
I have most records, there were 2 PO's, the clutch (and RMS) was changed the day before I picked up the car.
I drove it home from Kansas City (about 1300 miles) and the car was great. The battery died the next week, and the windshield washer does not work. I hope the car is reliable.
Barry
Torontoworker,
I live in the GTA and just bought a 2001 C2. I can tell you I paid much more than 25k$. THat is a good price, but of course you need to make sure you are not buying a bag of problems. Mine has worked great so far, except for the fact that I'm currently locked out of the car.
I know a guy who has one for sale for somewhere between 35k$ and 40k$, but with VERY low mileage (25,000 km I think). It's a 1999 C2, silver. Contact me if you are interested.
Thanks Granger, but's it's a bit over my budget to go above $30K as I have to buy TWO vehicles this year. The 996 is for the summer and because we're giving back the CTS in mid June after the lease is up, I have to buy my wife a car for the winter when the 996 goes in the garage to hide from the snow.
The Caddie has been ok, but it's NOT a Porsche. (Grin) Great highway car but with the sport option - around town the weight makes it slam and bang over manhole covers etc. She sat in the 996 on the weekend and I could *see* her mind picturing herself driving the Porsche... My master plan working!
The CTS sucks in snow even with traction control and X-Ice's so as a result we're going for a Yaris as I've had good luck with Yoda's over the years. We'll end up with four vehicles (two Yoda's, a 996 and a mx3) by the fall that I have to pay insurance on, (I pay for my daughters mazda) so State Farm should give me a fleet discount is what I figure!
I'm changing job locations in a few months so if I could get rid of my Toyota and take train then the budget could get up to 40K or so - but I want the car now before the good weather. I also want to do a few PCA DE events at Mosport this year. I've flagged so many UCR-PCA events at Mosport that it would be quite a change to be out there instead of watching and calling in passing without a point or four wheels off!
former owners don't mean much, if the car was leased and given back, sold to a dealer etc....these are all registrations as owners...sometimes only for a month or so...or so I have been told.
yea, I dont get that either... whats wrong with "multiple owners"?
the two ways to look at it... one guys owns it forever and tires of it so he gets lazy on upkeep and stuff, then sells it as a "one owner car" Or the owner is really **** and does it right, its time to move on and you get his "pride and joy"
The other side is every "new owner" falls madly in love with the car and does everything to protect their dream car including take it to the dealer for everything (including a little green circle light on the dash) and then they find out these cars are "expensive to operate" so they sell it... But each new owner frets and worries over every detail too - then again, maybe people think that a new driver drives the car hard and wears it out? (I thought that was one of the ways to keep thease cars FROM wearing out... if not driven TOO HARD and the computer should show any over revs right?)
The seal is
DEAD
! Pick it up Monday night. The PPI went great with just a few minor items that wouldn't be covered under the 'safety' which they have agreed to do. New battery and replace missing engine fan. (Don't ask why it was missing because I don't know).
Enjoy your 996! I bought my 2000 C4 Cab w/25K on it did the PPI (very good idea) have put 10K miles on it ..Just did a clutch (1st owner let his girlfriend drive it!) love it every day!
Yes and no. It came down to the price was right and two females in the house want to drive it, so I'm thinking how long a clutch would last under those conditions and well... (Grin) Plus the chances of any RMS failures is slightly reduced with a tip as I understand it. Although now that I've said that... (s**t!)
After driving it in manual mode it really was surprising how different it felt from how I *thought* it would feel. It really is a car that seemed to have a Jekyll and Hyde feeling between the Manual and the Auto mode. I like Mr. Jekyll...
It shifts really fast in M mode and you warp into license removal speed and your just getting into 3rd gear! I drove it without the dealer with me, (I guess I have a trusting face!) and a ricer in Supra (Big wing = big ***** mode - you know the type) starts up with me at a set of lights, so... come on, I had to see what it could do and everything, right? No contest.
I've had lot's of manual's in my life, (still have two in the driveway) and this car came nicely equipped and just looks good so... no regrets, (so far!).
again
awe boy...
really.... did I mention I have a GT2 wing for sale ....
OK back on track... welcome and glad things are working out... be safe out there, the "see what it can do"mode might be followed by the see how little you can control it mode.....

Thanks Ivangene - I've had higher HP cars then this one with less traction. Whats the last thing you hear a red neck say before he dies? 'Watch this...'
And don't take the 'wing' thing comment to heart, I think you've seen the guys I'm talking about.
LOL
the wing is an inside joke on one of my "issues"
to fill you in, I bought a HUGE GT2 wing that is WAY off ballance for my little C2. it was before I figured out how to "ask BEFORE buying" So I have been trying to sell thing for almost a year and everytime I can I toss out my "I have the perfect wing for you" comment (to which everyone knows what I am talking about) I do...
The future of the wing might be a bench somewhere, but until then I just keep laughing and taking crap about it (all in good fun of coarse)
Ed
Ed,
I got this wing straight from Germany. It is called "Die Grosse Mutter" (The Big Mother) and makes your GT2 wing look like a splinter. Just add wide rear fender wells and install "dualie" wheels on the rear and the wing will look just fine.
I agree, but the squirrel tail was a custom "one off" project developed exclusively for Phil.
However, "Die Grosse Mutter" has the potential to make a big splash in the 996 world. I foresee a bunch of narrow body 996's running around with this huge wing attached to the *** end of those cars.
