But most Techs if just testing two or three wires will just use a DVOM and back-probe them instead of dragging out the Break-out Box

In my quest to clear up Crank Position Sensor and DME issues, the service manual pointed me towards using Special Tool 9637, which (I believe) connects inline between the DME and the harness.

In my quest to clear up Crank Position Sensor and DME issues, the service manual pointed me towards using Special Tool 9637, which (I believe) connects inline between the DME and the harness. Does anyone have this tool used or has anyone built this tool themselves? I understand that I can back pin the DME connector wires, but anything that makes maintenance/troubleshooting going forward easier, would be great. Attached is the 2015 Special Tools and Equipment Catalog. The tool in question is on page 19 (PDF page 70).

Its my understanding it was a diagnostic tool for the dealer. Paying dealer labor rate is probably the only wat u will get to this tool.

Test Adaptor 9637 ( also known as a Break-out Box ) is an essential tool that is required by Porsche to be purchased by every Authorized Dealer... The cost is now about $7k usd if you can find one.. Part # 000 721 963 70 if you want to order one .. It does make testing wiring a lot easier if you are testing a lot of wires or if you want to tap into "live signals.." ... I wonder if one could be made using a sacrificial wire harness and the connectors off a bad DME?

I dont think wiring harness is the tool. I think the tool plugs inbetween and determines the signals in and out if the dme. I could be wrong as u have not seen the tool. i am sure with enough time and effort u could wire up a dme plug and dismantle an internal dme plug and make the harness. Not sure why u would not just back pin your harness with a spoon.
