Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

+1 Just had mine for 1 year on Saturday. I love it more and more every day.

POST 3Original post

me 3..... i have owned mine close to a year and i am obsessed....

POST 4Original post

I put 600+ miles on it this weekend going down to Washington DC and back. Its a workhorse that keeps on giving miles of smiles.

POST 6Original post

Yup! Me too! That's why all this "997 > 996" talk goes right over my head. These cars are serious sports cars that I feel lucky to be able to own. Period!

POST 8Original post

Depends on your definition of "real". I love my 996!

POST 9Original post

They're ALL great! Now get AWAY from that computer and go drive!

POST 10Original post

I got to check out the mk2 997 and clearly saw the improvements on the fit/finish of the interior, but couldn't help to notice that the overall design and shapes weren't improved, but in fact took a step back (call it retro-ized) to the much more squarish and angled look of the 993 interior. I'm not a fan of the 997's simplisitic VW bug eye headlights, either. It's too conservative and the 911 is starting to look rather staid when set against some of the more dynamic, fresh designs as you can clearly see in the celebrated R8. With all that said, I'm glad to have the aggressive 996 headlights on my MK2 996 and really do feel that the 997 is a generation I skip. I hope the next gen 911 takes a bold, controversial step forward along the aesthetic front while taking up a new diet regimen to bring the avg weight of the Carrera series closer to a real world 3 triple 0. I'd even argue that cars like the R8 exposes the 911's rear-engine limitations and would even welcome a move to a mid-engine platform, though I'm not sure it's something Porsche is ready to do for its flagship model. I'm not sure the conservative 911 buying audience is ready. I am. As for people who are going to say Porsche already has a fine mid-engine car, the Cayman brand and look is just not there yet. Maybe in 50 years. I'm really curious how Porsche sells/markets the next 911. It just can't keep going with the rear engine platform because everyone else is just getting better and better. Heck, it's the first time I've ever said "I want an Audi" let alone an Audi over a Porsche 911!

Agree 100%. I love the interior of the 996. The modern cars are way too retro, with plastic that is supposed to look like aluminum all over the place. I'll take the subdued, dark, rich look of the later 944 over a 997! So there!

POST 13Original post

Cool. I will say though that the 996 interior needs to be dressed up quite a bit to be palatable. I'm talking nearly $10K on the original options boxes checked; otherwise, the typical standard interior is absolutely embarrassing for an $80K+ MSRP ride. The mk1 plastics warrants a What were they thinking? inquiry. My $.99

My car has full leather, so I never had an issue with the plastics.

POST 15Original post

Just turned over 108K miles on my daily driver. Drive it, love it, never look back. I have owned a 914-6, 930, 993 and Boxster S before my 996 Cab and wouldn't trade it for the world. One of the best sports cars I have ever owned. B

POST 16Original post

Love mine, if there's one thing I could change.... sometimes I wish I had gotten a 6speed. (Just "sometimes" ...)

POST 17Original post

Quotes source posts: 6414753, 6414894

+1. I really LOVE the 996 interior in full leather. I wouldn't change it, but IF Porsche was offering free PDK upgrades...

POST 18Original post

I love mine as well. It's getting long in the tooth now, 7 years but damn, I wouldn't pick many newer cars over it! Style, power, comfort, and panache!

POST 20Original post

Finally, someone on a car forum who knows how to spell "panache!"

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 6416037

sounds like panocho in Costa Rican Spanish..

POST 23Original post

Any way you look at it.....we are all damn lucky to own one of these!

POST 25Original post

No worries: Panache: Current use Panache is now used to describe someone who has a dashing confidence of style, or shows a certain flamboyance and courage, and is a familiar word now in English. Its meaning has also been extended to include anything capable of displaying such attributes And yes, I consider myself damn lucky to have one!!

POST 26Original post

And absence does make the heart grow fonder... coming up on two months with the car in the body shop... hopefully this weekend! (fingers crossed...) I understand that there's a lot of work to do on fiberglass pieces (I've seen the corrections they've had to make so that all the gaps are even)... I'm hoping all of my patience will be worthwhile... (in my heart of hearts I think it will be...) Anyway, lots to love about these cars... and the reason I bought mine is the shape and reputation are timeless... to the less sophisticated this car looks just like the MY09s... and for me, "There is no substitute" for a Carrera Cab... Rudy

POST 27Original post

Rudy what kind of parts... are you putting on?.... pics?

POST 28Original post

nothin but love here as well. Honestly, I would not change a thing... but then again, who could not use a few extra bhp?

POST 29Original post

Sneaky Pete, I can see why you're banging your head over the 1973 BMW 2002 that was transformed to a wedding ring! I would love to have one of those, my bro-in-law used to have one, I was just a little kid then.

POST 30Original post

Rudy, is this body work from a post a long time ago with a small hole in the bumper cover from a parking lot hit and dash??? I am forgetful, but man 2 months w/o the car....and knowing martial arts.....I would be working my a@@ off trying to get it done for you !!! - -- - - we are still good right hahaha

+1000 My 2000 C2 has been hibernating most of this winter due to the ever present salt on the roads here, however I took her out this past Saturday for a good drive and fell in love all over again. I've owned the car for over three years now and every drive is as exciting as the first. I have owned and/or driven many great cars and my 996 still ranks up there at the top of my list. BTW, where is all of that global warming. I sure wish it would come visit us here in the North Eastern United States.

POST 32Original post

I couldn't agree more. 10 year old car (even though I haven't had it for that long) it's still fantastic. Love the simplicity of my car, feedback, looks and comfort. I do like the 997 MKI and the 964 (especially the RS America) and 993 but I'm not tempted to move from what I have. I had a chance to drive her on Sunday and was reminded just how much fun this car is. Then I cleaned the radiators and while there where some frustrating parts (loosing my trim removal tool), there is a sense of satisfaction doing these kinds of projects. Being that my car is so simple, I look forward to trying new DIY's and projects that I would be a bit more wary on a newer car.

POST 33Original post

Cosmos, the BMW2002 was the last year with the round tail lights and was Agave Green. That was my first taste of fun car to throw around the corners. That was in the mid 90's. Even did a DE at Road America in it. There was so much room in the engine bay that you could fit a couch in there and take a nap! That car took me all the way to today's 996. Quite the trip and luv'n it all the way! The 996 is by far the best yet.

POST 34Original post

i recently traded into a 2002 C4S. I am off to a track event in May. So far, all I can say is: If you like the regular one, try the big butt variant.

POST 35Original post

I got mine home last Friday, washed, cleaned and waxed it up over the weekend, and then left town. It has been sitting in my garage, clean and ready since Sunday. I'm dying to get back home and drive it!
