Suggestion
I have learned here on RL how to perform general maintenance like replacing the battery, fluid changes (engine and transmission), brake pads and rotors, changing the entire suspension to the X74, replacing my seats with GT3's and a ton of other stuff.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thought I'd share the last 5 years of Porsche 996 ownership. On 9/6/06 I bought a 6 speed black coupe with 35,450 miles on the odometer. I now have a bit over 56k miles, and can say that I haven't owed a more reliable car that has given me loads of fun and virtually no major trouble. I have purchased 4 snows and 2 rear summer performance tires to date. Replaced 1 front wheel bearing, 1 leaking coolant tank, 1 new Interstate battery,4 brake pads, and fixed a broken center console hinge. Did the DFister exhaust mod, purchased the M030 suspension including anti- roll bars, bought a 3 piece steering wheel and performed numerous oil and filter changes, new air filter and cabin filter, and a new MAF. Rennlist has given me invaluable information and a large group of internet friends who all share a common interest...PORSCHE. Looking forward to another few years, and at some point I'll be looking for my next Porsche when the time is right. Maybe a 997
who knows, but it will be a 6 speed, rear wheel drive and probably another coupe.
+1 Similar story bought a 2001 C4 10K miles Jan 2005 now at 43K miles.
Replaced MAF, some rear tires and fronts also. A new battery.Oil Changes
All with the help of my Rennlist friends!!
Driven every winter in all kinds of slush and snow.
Just a GREAT Car so happy I finally did it.
Would like to trade up for a 997 as I "love those headlights"
Congrats! These cars are awesome, reliable and built to be driven. So, when will you give her a try at the track?....that is what they were designed for!
Good for you Steve! I bought mine 4 yrs ago. I have learned here on RL how to perform general maintenance like replacing the battery, fluid changes (engine and transmission), brake pads and rotors, changing the entire suspension to the X74, replacing my seats with GT3's and a ton of other stuff. I have had to replace the water pump and the coolant tank and a RMS seal. I have accumulated tools and tires I never owned before this car. I bought it with 52K miles and am now 450 shy of 100K. This car has been my daily driver, weekend toy and track car (for 22 days) since I have had it. I drive wind, rain, sun, sleet and snow. I love my car!
Time does fly when you are having fun. Reading your 5 year post reminded me we picked up our C4 in July of last year - WoW we are into our second year and added just over 7000 miles in that time. Yes we have had some expenses - but most items were typical 10 year old car stuff. Most bucks on tires and swapping to the PSS9 suspension - and both of those made for even more enjoyment.
And Steve ... I so much appreciate your comment - "Rennlist has given me invaluable information". I fixed three items Cheaply on my own thanks to You Rennlisters - THANKS for the community.
That's awesome. Five years is a long time to keep a car by today's standards, even a new car!
I'm planning to have my C4S for 5 years, but who knows... I may be shopping for a 997 or 991 before I know it. For now though, I just got this one the way I want it! I can't imagine selling it!
Here's to five more years of Porsche an rennlist enjoyment!
Similar report here. Just turning 5 years of ownership.
2003 C2 Cab just turned 10k when I bought it in 9/06 -- now 43.5k -- pretty good use for someone who works from home most of the time.
Main expenses have been:
- optional: added built-in radar/laser, PSE & a set of winter wheels/tires from Ed (Ivangene)
- preventative maintenance: (LNE-IMS/RMS/clutch) & water pump
- scheduled maintenance
- replaced: 1 set of tires, 1 battery & headlight switch (when headlights started to be slow to illuminate).
Never failed to start. Continues to drive well. Good power/mpg. Very pleasant to own.
One unlikely good addition was a set of musician's ear plugs so that I can hear well, but insulated from traffic noise. Has encouraged me to do a lot more top-down driving than I would have otherwise. Have enjoyed the hard-top during off-season.
