Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just out of curiosity, are there many Paint To Sample 996 cars out there? I just don't think I've seen many at all in the 996 generation of 911. It seems that there are a lot more in the 997 group.
There's a very light yellow Boxster (with matching hardtop) around Birmingham. Was just talking about it with the service folks at the dealership and we all agreed it's a completely unbearable color. It was a custom color.
Some people.
No 996s around that are paint to sample though.
i was going to do paint to sample on my c4s (riviera blue or the lamborghini yellow) but then Porsche extended the time it was going to take so I just went the not as awesome Speed Yellow.
It just seems like an option that:
1 Is really expensive
2 Ends badly
3 potentially dimishes value
4 and adds no value (unless you find your style twin)
I saw a 996 at the dealer in Boulder that was a paint to sample car for someone who was cut before he made the team (Miami Dolphins). The exterior was orange and the interior was that nasty green of that 996 Turbo that appears for sale from time to time. I watched the price drop as it sat on the lot, but just couldn't do it.
I just happened to see what I think had to be a paint per sample 996 in town a few days ago. It was a 996 coupe in a pastel yellow. I am a big fan of the retro colors like Gulf Blue, Mexico Blue, and of course Turquoise (Edgy01). I really liked this light yellow too.
This thread is essentially reinforcing what I have been observing. Very few PTS 996 cars. After a slow start, the 997s are starting to come out in a lot of PTS colors. Perhaps it was the economy and the demand to be a conformist during the 1999 to 2004 days! Any color, so long as it's silver (and with black interior!)
I dont think the owner cares because this cost a lot to paint.. Everything was removed.. Apparently there is one out there that was a paint to order. Check it out (and the sale price).

(ps) sorry to highjack this tread..
I'm sure the owner doesn't care, otherwise they wouldn't have done it, but I do wonder about the panels that didn't get painted.
I know if I were looking at a car and discovered it it had been repainted like that I'd walk away - especially if you're telling me that the entire surface was stripped prior to the repaint, as that would have removed the cathodic corrosion inhibitor and make it prone to rust.
To do a repaint correctly, the car literally needs to be dissembled, and the panels stripped and completely redone. My brother is in the process of having his '71 MB 280SL repainted in this manner - very expensive if done right (somewhere between $20-30K).
Correct. Also almost all the body is composite panels and every body part/panel was removed and painted separately and individually (and there were a lot of body parts). It was interesting to get a good look at the GT minis the body. Most of the frame, interior, etc., is carbon fiber. And you are very right on the pricing.. It was an interesting project to see.
It was pretty amazing. I will PM you next week and tell you all about my car paint problems and the on the outcome (if you remember could not match the Glacier White).
Very long story and interesting.. Should have the final results next week. But I will say the guy that did the Orange GT is doing mine. I will let you know.
Was car hunting tonight and found these (one GT2, one Turbo, One C2 but all are 996's):

The GT2 @ RPM is one of Seinfeld's cars.
I see the price on it has been lowered by $50,000 !
I always gag when I see RPM pricing. I know some here swear by RPM. I wouldn't bother making a phone call there.
Phil
I think that third one is a scam...it's that green TT that has been mentioned in the thread a few times. The ad says "private seller", it doesn't mention that it's a turbo, and they're asking $26k for it.
Yes, That one has been around, the last price I saw was like 46k..must be a scam. With that being said, think it will sell at this "new" price (if not a scam)?
Personally, I like the GT2 at RPM.
Here is boxster that claims to be a paint to sample, but it looks like cobalt blue.

I love the GT2 @ RPM. Just doubt you could get it at reasonable price.
That Boxster looks pretty hot. I like it too.
Couple years ago I saw a PTS Boxster for sale in Blue Turquoise like Dan's 997. It looked awesome. I was lusting after it big time.

I thought about putting it in my garage next to my 997, it's for sale less than 10 miles away. But it's got a lot of milage and no Litronic's which makes the front look sad.
I spoke with the seller, it does have a new top and 18" wheels both pluses. Now if it was a pre 200 it could be used for spec racing.
I'll bet you can get for less than $10k. I know it's had a few owners it was actually for sale at Leith Porsche about 2 years back, maybe less. Slap a new engine in, at some point, maybe even a 3.4 and dang you'll have a cool garage Phil. Or buy it for Sunday drives, you'll put so little mileage on it the 102 000 miles won't matter.
PS He's selling it as "Carolina Blue" that's a first
Geeez to have a boxster twin just 10 miles away in such a smokin hot color.
Go to the bank ask them for 5 or 6K in 20's. Then go buy a briefcase and put all the 20's in it.
Walk in say here's 5K cash. Pop it open and they will $hit. You'd be suprised at how well this works. If the motor dies in a couple of years do an engine upgrade and all is good. My 2 cents.
Damn boxsters are getting soooo cheap it is almost hard not to buy one. There are two orig. owner cars less than 5 miles from me. Both have dropped their prices to 13K and both have 60K miles.
Keep in mind that Blue Turquoise was a standard 911, turbo, and 986 (Boxster) color in years 1996 and 1997. Few, however, were ever delivered in that color. In those years, it wasn't popular.
Note that with the 996's they offered belts in Maritime Blue, this Maritime Blue C4S has 'em!
I wonder if I could swop mine out? But just like yellow belts they sure as hell show dirt.
Pictures sent to me by the sales guy in the UK.

Looks like arena red, orient red or ruby red, but it isn't. This came from the Porsche website used car list.
Note the natural brown interior with the deviating carpet in black too.
Here's one I saw this afternoon in town at an indy shop. Pretty different.
Can't say for sure that it's PTS. Could be a repaint, but I don't think so.
I'd say it looks like the 996 PTS cars are out there. They just don't appear to be represented here by RL owners.
Really not that many 997 PTS owners on RL either. Are there?

I think this was a 964 RS color.
Someone should save all these and upload them to this thread before all the links are no longer good.
And you guys laughed at ME!! Asking $69K for this car is a joke, especially in that color. It's worth $45-47K, period. I guess someone will pay a premium for essentially a new car. Hey, HUGH, you got a great deal on my car!!! (But, I really didn't have to tell you that)!
Lime Pearl Metalic posted on ebay.
If this was a factory color, it should have been a paint to sample.

That looks like Natural Brown on a PtS Turquoise Blue 996.2. Anyone know anything here?
Picture looks like it's out West, within a days drive of LA even?
Great thread, before I bought my 996.
I prefer the harder to find colors over silver, black, gray or white.
I wonder when there is an order for PTS, does porsche then assign a paint code to the color, what would the sticker under the frunk have on it?
Road Scholars had this one for sale while I was in the process of buying my 40AE in January. It lasted about an hour I think, and was well-priced. That said, I'm not sure I get why someone would shell out the money for PTS and then get gray. To each their own, but if I'm going PTS, it's going to be an historical Porsche hue.

I have the same situation with my PTS Glacier White 2001 996TT. Glacier white was only available on 99 996, or 993. 2001 is supposed to be Biarritz white...2002-2005 Carrara white.
heres my glacier white on Boxster red
I know this was an old thread but worth resurrection I sold by PTS Orange coupe a few years ago but try now to pry out of my dead hands my 1999 PTS Ferrari Yellow six speed coupe with painted hard back sport seats😀

In fact we love the colorful cars over the years from Porsche and other manufacturers please plan to join us and display your Car of Color at our inaugural Wheels Of Color Automotive Gathering in Sebring this November. 👍

My 996 is a paint to sample. Its very difficult to get a thats what it looks like picture of it - it varies between baby blue to aqua to silver depending on the light conditions. I have only ever seen show cars have the same level of dynamic range, (for lack of a better term).

what color does the fender tag name your paint color? What is paint code on white option sticker under front hood list? Love to hear about and see examples of PTS. Cars especially 996s.
posting pictures is always nice.

No affiliation, 1999 Carrera manual, in NATO drab olive, space grey interior, sport seats with painted backs, 1 owner, X51, new engine (begs the question if still X51-equipped) and paint in original colour in 2017. Aero kit was probably added at that time.
Came with sport design wheels originally.

At the bottom on the post I explain the details I have around C99 from the VIN search I did. The name of the paint remains a bit of a mystery. Mercedes has a color with the same name as the factory used for mine, but it is completely different. 3D7 9 4 WBL didn't match up with anything I could find from Porsche.
None of these pictures show the glowing baby blue side of this paint.
Chalcedony blue metallic
HISTORY, NAME, LOCALITIES: Blue chalcedony has been known since antiquity. Chalcedony, pronounced kal-SED-oh-nee, is the microcrystalline form of quartz [silicon dioxide, SiO2]. The name “blue chalcedony” refers to its color. Blue chalcedony is collected in Malawi, Namibia, Turkey, and the United States (Washington, Oregon).
MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: The physical properties of blue chalcedony are the same as those of quartz], with the exception of its diagnostic, pale-blue color. Blue chalcedony has a Mohs hardness of nearly 7.0, a conchoidal fracture, waxy luster, and a specific gravity of 2.65. Its color, a soft, delicate blue with hints of purple, is due to the interference of light caused by reflection from the interfaces of interlocked microcrystals. Blue chalcedony occurs primarily as nodules and lenses in sedimentary formations when colloidal silica suspensions lose water and solidify into masses of microcrystalline quartz.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: According to metaphysical beliefs, blue chalcedony is a stone of gentle energy that adjusts the balance between the body, mind, and spirit; reduces hostility, anger, and irritation; and promotes mental and emotional stability and honesty. Blue chalcedony is gaining popularity as a gemstone and is fashioned into beads and cabochons.
COLLECTORS’ INFORMATION: Blue chalcedony is collected because of its soft, glowing translucency and blue hues that are unusual in chalcedony.
Ice Green Metallic was a standard color in 1974 and a few years after that. I always lusted for it or Chiffon White. Both colors were "off" the usual Easter egg" colors for the 70's, but had a subtle look of class and originality. Or something, I just know I liked them a lot, but even rare in that time era.
There was another Ice Green Metallic C4S sold sometime around Feb-24 (Pcarmarket), went for about $66k IIRC. Maybe this is the same one? Don't know.
YMMV
