Suggestion
This particular paint job looks good from far, but far from good up close, it has been resprayed, very average quality workin fact, I hope to change the color to one of two others I have in mind, either Porsche Forest Metallic Green, or a beautiful pale sky blue metallic that I have in my minds eye, based on a color from a Gas Monkey Garage build.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Viola Metallic, special order for only 2000 and 2001 as I understood. I have ye to see another one in person, another Rennlister in this area mentioned in the Canadian forum he also has one of the same color, however he rarely posts and has not come out to any of the local P-car gatherings, his is also a Cab too.
Great color ... really a stunning car, and one that is sure to stand out in a crowd.
I'm on the other end of the continuum with the color that absolutely melts into the background -- Paladio Pearl Metallic, aka Mirage. Like Viola, this was a special order color for two model years, 1999 and 2000. I've seen ads for several other 996's for sale in this color, but have never actually seen another one.
Many shades of blue in here, but I have't seen Ocean Blue yet. Not exactly rare, but I like the blue/purple/black hues you can get on this car, depending on the lighting.
Ocean Blue Metallic
I have an Ocean Blue Metallic, but my pictures suck. I, too, love the way it changes color. It reminds me of the ocean in Hawaii when I lived there. When you are on a boat a half mile or so from shore, the light in the water plays the same tricks.
+1 Ocean Blue, in the right light it looks a bit like the "color change" paint, dark blue, not as dark as Midnight Blue, with pale blue/silver highlights when the sun hits it just right.
What settings did you use on your camera to get the car to "pop" like that?
I can do that on mine with human subjects but haven't had any luck getting it to work for my car.
My car is Palladio Metallic, AKA high-performance beige. I wasn't totally excited about the color when I first bought the car, but the fact it was a bit of an oddball color attracted me to it, and now I like it a lot. Also, it always looks clean, which is nice living in Seattle where it rains a lot.
That's exactly how I felt about it also. Local shop had the car ... I saw the ad and said "beige?" Who the #%^*€@! paints a Porsche beige?" Then I went to look at the car and bought it.
One thing that's on the drawing board for later this year (warmer weather) is painting the bumperettes in body color. IMO, black trim pieces don't look so great with this color.
And I agree about the car looking clean ... with all the crap on the roads this winter, dirt hiding capability was a definite plus.
Ha! That was basically my exact thought and purchase process for my car as well. Also, I detailed the car and waxed it last weekend to celebrate a few days of sun we're having right now and I must say that this color really pops in the sun. It does a cool flip from gold to silver depending on the lighting.
To add to your observation. It's funny how some cars and colours don't work at all in mid and nothern Europe (I live in Belgium), but are almost appealing under the sun of southern US states! It probably is the case with your Palladio 996s!
Fabrice
GT, when I bought it at the salvage yard, I thought I was buying a grey car....it was dirty and covered with soot from an engine fire. I was surprised when I washed it. Depending on the light, it can change from grey to purple. At night it is almost black. It looks like an eggplant. It was featured on the cover of the first edition of Total 911 Magazine....
http://www.total911.com/total-911-issue-one-for-sale/
It's funny you mentioned "eggplant", that's exactly what a graphics artist friend used to describe my car the day after I picked up my car, at the time I thought my car was Vesuvio, but later on I found the color was Viola Metallic from the color data plate in the trunk under the driver side liner.
If your car is in fact Vesuvio, then it's the only Vesuvio 996 I have ever read about!
Aviography, we enjoyed the Vesuvio car. My wife loved the tiptronic transmission. It was fun owning two 996s for a while. I think that your car is a nicer color. One of the many things that I love about 911s are all of the unique colors....you don't see too many purple Ferraris.
I looked at a ton of 996s when shopping for mine. I just felt dirty in anything but black, it was always my dream and regardless of "good deals" I couldn't pull the trigger on anything but black.
I love seeing the red, yellow, and blue ones running around town. But for me black (which gets no love) really screams sports car.
not taking away from other colors, to each their own...
Here is my 2003 C4S in "Seal Gray". I have owned many different colors on 911s from guards red, silver, diamond blue, white, and black. The condition of my latest C4S had extremely low miles and was in a "like new" condition. That said, it still needed a full detailing. I compete and was a judge in PCA top side concours over the years and tend to be picky with paint conditioning. Every color has their strength and weakness. Seal Gray is a interesting color and I can see why Porsche has used it a lot in advertising and new model debut. It has the depth like black but also hides dust and finger prints like light silver and accentuates the curves on a 911. The color hue changes in different light and has a deep wet shine almost like a glazed donut. It's going to be a very rewarding color to wash but easy to live with while driving and being used.

Very nice. I usually don't like Guards Red and usually don't like cars that are "over" decal'd out but yours is done up very nice. You found a very good balance and design combination IMO. Well done.

I wonder when you cross the line between: "Resale on a car that color will be horrible" and "What a cool, unusual color! I'd pay extra for that!". It must happen at a certain age. I think the 996 cars have crossed that line, and the 997 cars are getting close. Anyone driving a 991 in an unusual color (like me) is still reminded frequently that they will never be able to sell it. My day will come....

Most people think this is the Lapis blue but it's actually a color match done by
the original owner. All factory Porsche painted. All I found was a Dupont color code used in the glove box. Close to Lapis Blue but a bit lighter/brighter.

I just picked up this 1999 painted in a factory color called "Vesuvio Gray Metallic" . I had not seen one like this before, and it can seem to change hues in different light.
Rain Forest Green. Picked it up mid-Sept. Only 300 miles on it since I grabbed it due to ongoing coolant issues and winter. Can't wait till the spring time.
@uscarrera
is my hero haha so youre the owner of the single Ocean Jade 996 on Rennbowcheers! I love Pastel Yellow a lot
@Goofy1
despite the usual criticism of a sea of silver and black 996s, black is very modern relevant color. I have a black 996 cabriolet that I daily and most people think it is a new car
@rino924
I was on a hunt for Rainforest Green and couldnt find a good onethey are rarer than people think!

My "new to me" 2002 C2 black on black. Absolutely loving this car! I really love the black sinister look, but am considering breaking up the black/dark colors with some colored calipers? What do you guys suggest? I'd really like to do something different than red or yellow. I was thinking of orange or maybe blue...thoughts?
I know that I've posted before...but I could not find it!
Vesuvio Gray Metallic. Black satin wheels presently, but I wonder if there is another color that would look good. Gold, Bronze, Gun Metal Gray, etc. Any constructive opinions appreciated as always.

I saw a L999 - Atlantic Blue with Magnolia leather on UK autotrader a while back. Notice the (unique?) two-tone interior. I saw it for $55k and it is not on sale anymore so..... it must have been worth it or close.... Simply stunning I think.

Great idea, I wonder how many there really are. I’ve never seen another one in the wild ever. A true unicorn color if there ever was one. Yours is a beauty!
bdronsick: Thanks. I know of another one up around Mankato, MN. I met that owner on Facebook....which I no longer use. Pretty rare color according to the PCA color tables.
Interesting deck lid on the new arrival. Good wheels, too.
Vesuvio Metallic was created to accompany Stahlgrau (Steel Grey) on the 1997-98 Vesuvius Edition 993. Stahlgrau wheels are perfect with Vesuvio! As are the additional Stahlgrau accents on mirrors, door handles, and rear wing grille.
Serendipitously Vesuvio Metallic paint was also offered as special order on the early MY1999 996’s that were sequenced among the final 993’s on the same assembly line in late 1997 / early 1998. I have a very early 1998 996 sales brochure that actually includes a Vesuvio swatch; although it doesn’t appear in subsequent printings.
Vesuvio is a very, very deep iridescent purple; the paint application and/or curing processes was surely both labor and cost intensive, probably exceeding the value for Porsche of painting 996’s alone in this color, without the benefit of the added special 993 ”Vesuvius Edition” premium. Likely that once the final 993 Vesuvius Editions were completed, Vesuvio Metallic was quickly retired.
Vesuvio is a mysterious color indeed.
http://www.renescollectables.com/911...rera-s-vesuvio
https://www.nineexcellence.com/porsc...-for-sale.html
Only 100 Vesuvius Edition 993’s were delivered worldwide. And I’ve heard anecdotally only 60 early 996’s were graced with Vesuvio Metallic during the brief period it was available on both generations. I do know Vesuvio Metallic 911’s of either generation are incredibly rare. For instance, Germancarsforsale blog describes Vesuvio Metallic as the “rarest Porsche 911 color ever offered that was not paint to sample”.
Another interesting fact about Vesuvio is it was exclusive to the 911; and never allowed on any other model, not even in PTS. There are only a handful of Porsche colors ever with that singular reservation.
As shown in my avatar, given its astronomical rarity, “Total 911” magazine chose a Vesuvio Metallic 1999 to represent the mythic 3.4 liter 996 generation on the cover of their inaugural edition.
And given that Vesuvio Metallic 993’s are already trading over six figures, future market values for any Vesuvio Metallic 911 are promising, to say the least! 🤑
Great information. Another Vesuvio anecdote came from one of my local PCA cohorts: he knew someone in the engineering firm he worked at that had a 993 in Vesuvio Gray Metallic. When he sold it, he asked $10k more than the going rate for 993's at that time - about five years ago - and got it. So, maybe I'll hang on to my '99 for a while -- maybe my grandson will make a killing on the sale way down the road.
From what I’m seeing in mostly Euro sales (where most were sold), Vesuvius Edition 993’s are worth up to twice the standard market price 993. I bet that guy got that “$10K more” before the pics had even finished uploading on whatever server it was listed.
Yep, it's Vesuvio over full leather in Space Grey.
https://vinanalytics.com/car/WP0AA299XXS627057/
The interior is somewhat intact, but the leather dashboard has been painted black on top and is cracking. Seats have been reupholstered in a quilted vinyl. I might try to pick up a set of stock ones, or I might go GT3 seats.
It came wearing a black Aerokit front bumper, and side skirts, along with the modified Getty Design rear wing in black. I also managed to get the original front bumper and rear decklid in the deal with the help of the former owner who is a Rennlist member. He sold it to a dismantler to be parted out, but I convinced him to sell it whole. Now it will hopefully live to drive another day.
Sadly the hood is black from another car. The previous owner was in between deciding to paint it all black or Vesuvio and traded the hood to the dismantler who either sold, scrapped, or lost it.
I'll be creating a thread to document the progress with the car once the weather allows for some driving and giving it a good bath.
paint it all black?? Just wow ignorance.
What a worthy project returning a MY1999 Vesuvio to its 1997 993 assembly line glory. Cant wait to start following the thread! Godspeed!,
thnk you,for posting this information. I have a 99 Cab in Vesuvio and its a fantastic color. Mine has lots of natural patina. Stone chips and unfortunately a few hits to both bumpers. It will need paint. I wonder how hard it will be to have the paint matched perfectly? Mine is one of maybe 10 in Australia, possibly less. Aus Porsche couldnt tell me as they dont have access to the database anymore.
heres a few more shots showing the color. Not great pics. But anyhoo...
Based on frequency worldwide I theorize less than 10 Vesuvio examples in Aus.
And a good body shop will be able to match Vesuvio; its unique but not impossible. It took doing (and twice as long), but Eric at Bumlerplugs dot com was able to create perfect plugs and rear bumperettes for mine. And I mean a perfect match! No added charge (Eric is the best!).
Not a special color, but a classic nonetheless.
Present state:
And, the two color samples:
Metallic Forest Green
Metallic Light Blue
Its been great to see all these pics of 996s!
Couple more Vesuvio, like a deep “grape” purple. One of the scant few (if not the only) colors reserved exclusively for the 911. Available 993/996 1997-2001, and Paint To Sample on GT 911 variants thereafter; interesting there was a PTS Vesuvio 991 GT2RS on the showroom floor next to this 1999 at Isringhausen Porsche where I found it..
There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, like a purple 911. Any year, any generation. Purple just somehow surpasses them all. This is my opinion of course!
There are a few colors that I don't think you see often enough but I understand they just don't sell as well. Purple, yellow, green, and brown, especially in metallic.
Nobody wants to drive a brand new yellow or purple 911 to work; hence their absence from showroom floors.
But everybody wants an old yellow or purple 911 next to them on the lawn at Pebble Beach.
Unicorn 911's age into their inestimable value.
20-years (2019) was only the dawn of Type 996 on the collector market. We really haven't even seen anything yet.
By 2029 Type 996 will be literally on fire.
Asked somebody to Photoshop my car with color matched Forest Green wheel centers to see how it would look. Going for a throwback period look Special Wishes car. I think it looks really cool.

Interesting all the vesuvio metallic in this thread; Id say that is the purple in violet chromaflair. The green is the differentiator and how is there not a millennium in this thread?!

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...1-carrera-199/
Could be the only Early 1999 in Vesuvio ever offered for sale online.
Just picked this up. Mirage. Very nice color and not many of them around. 32K miles and one family owned. The Speedline wheels are a nice touch 😎
Kinda digging the color 😎
I got a Paladio as well, and it is very subtle and changes a lot based on the light. I love it. There were quite a few made in this color, but it is pretty rare, 4 out of 5 on the rennbow scale. Ive only found 2 or 3 others in aerokit form in online searches.
Easy: if the build date on the door jamb sticker is within 11/97 - 08/98 then amber lenses were fitted originally. If build date is 09/98 or later it came with clear lenses. That is definitive.
Picked up this Carrera 4s on Thursday. It's my first H2O P-car, after owing a 912, five "regular" air-cooled 911s and a 930. It's been only a couple of days and maybe 100 miles, but this thing has impressed the **** out of me so far. Hoping to get some decent photos soon, but this one I snapped in my driveway will have to do for now.
Oh, and anyone who thinks the 996 headlights are ugly really oughta think again - these are
exactly
what they should've been when these cars were designed.
Your car is supe nice! I alway loved the millenium edition. I saw one recently at Ryan Freedman motorcars. It had vey low miles. The color looked amazing. They had recently polished it and under the neon lights it looked like a jewel with the chrome wheels. Really eye catching.
Australian Car dealers...Mine was sold to me online from Western Australia online as Seal Grey with a Grey interior. Reading the build sticker it's Vesuvio with a Black interior. I like it it so much I've switched from mod mode to reliability preservation. Still replacing/upgrading 20 year old suspension. Still doing LN 3.4 to 3.8 Nickies, for durability. Keeping most of the rest standard now. Worst of all I gave myself the wrong Avatar namr for Rennlist
From one of one of the most common 996 colors to one of the rarest

My 4th 911, black turbo, blue targa and lapis bl C4S cab. Always loved white with blue top and blue interior. Finally got one last year, a 01 with 11k miles.
white doesn't seem to be to common and it has grown on me.
Only one Zenith car on this thread...ans even 3 Vesuvios have been confirmed! I'll add my own Zenith here as well:

This is mine Lapis Blue exterior with Savannah Beige/ black interior.
I know a lot of people aren't keen on the Savannah, but I find the lighter Savannah which is almost a cream, broken up with the black and dark carpet is great look. I definitely couldn't do 100% beige.
Crap. Looks like I already posted once. Oh well, heres some more 😎
Palidio Pearl Metallic (Mirage Metallic) with Speedline 3 Part Wheels. Not many around, but 2000 seemed to be the year for this color.
23 option codes including code 09991 (Exclusive Program), 3 spoke steering wheel, carbon touches, painted center console, etc.
TechArt whale tail
Only 32K when I bought. Silver faced gauges from TechArt
TechArt Lowering Springs
The look of the whale tail matches the car's lines. And, yes, the GT3 tramp stamp has been replaced by a Carrera badge.
Here is my Forest Green 2000 C4 . Savannah interior with sports sears , matching center console and sport designs. Forest Green according to The Essential Companion was a special order color and came with $3-4k price tag.
Thanks very much, I must admit I've had a hard time working out the interior colour conclusively, but based it on others listed with the same colour as Savannah Beige. What is PTS?
Finally got around to looking at the paperwork and interior is a code 99 which is indeed LTS (leather to sample). So it looks like my car is a little more unique than I first realised!
I have always wanted this color - Ice Green Metallic. I have never seen it on another Carrera 4S, 4, or 2. Not my photos. (Over my budget...)
