It's affordable, he's a total Porsche enthusiast and it is one of the cheapest things you can do to your car with probably the biggest smile factor.
Leading evidence: 'biggest smile factor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'biggest smile factor' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run around' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

However, because its my DD, I'd like to avoid running muffler bypass pipes for however long it takes to ship my exhaust back and forth from Indy to Cali (to avoid giving up my lightly used exhaust and to avoid moving around my tips).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I finally decided I want the FisterD stage II muffler hack. My exhaust is way too quiet, even though its my daily driver. However, because its my DD, I'd like to avoid running muffler bypass pipes for however long it takes to ship my exhaust back and forth from Indy to Cali (to avoid giving up my lightly used exhaust and to avoid moving around my tips). My neighbors and most importantly wife would not be happy with the muffler bypass pipes for a few weeks.
The recs from Fister's posts (thanks Fister!) seem to be, 1.75" pipe from inlet to outlet, stainless steel welding, don't intrude into the inlet outlet pipes. Any other recs from people who got it done at their local shop? Thanks!
I did it at my local shop, they had no previosu experience and they manage to do it easily with a picture of the final results.
the thing is you need to buy the pie with the bend. as very few shop can either bend or cut stainless steel. also make sure they can weld stainless steel, most of my local shop said they could not do it.
I had bought a separate set of exhaust to drive while it was done, and also in case they mess it up too badly.
I might be able to find the exact piece of pipe I bought and where, if you need it. I go the info on the forum anyways.
best mod ever, good luck with it.
did you do stage I or stage II? i can't imagine much of a bend is needed for the stage II hack. if it is needed, i'd appreciate the link for the mandrel bent pipe you used.
Balefire- I work at a shop that can weld stainless. I'm thinking of having them do the hack. Send the link on the bent pipe when you get it. I could stop by after it is done so you can hear.
Granted the cost is cheap but its cheaper to DIY......can't guarantee the quality though. But you can also reply when someone asks you what did you to make sound so good you can say that you did it yourself. And if it was a woman who asked the question.......your gettin' lucky.
wait.... what?
I was supposed to get lucky from that line if questioning she was going down
damn, me and my big mouth dont know when to shud up!! she never did call so I could "do the hack" on her"
(probably figured "GEEZ, Shud up already !!)
here is the post I used

Classic Tube [phone removed]
http://classictube.com/
Item #65-180-125-20
Part: 16 Gage - .065" Wall
Description: 180 "U" Bend 2" Radius Legs 6" x 6"
Make/Type: 304 Stainless Steel
Model/Size: 1-1/4"
this post show the Hack 'stage 2' (intake pipe connected to the outlet pipe), I decided to stay closer to stock and make the 'stage 1' (muffler body connected to the outlet pipe).
thanks for the link.
it looks like waynesworld was one of the first to do the stage II mod on a 3.4L with a 1.25" tube, 6" radius.
psperl also did a stage II mod on 3.4L with a 1.75" tube, 2" radius
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...pe-1-75-a.html
can i assume that the 6 in radius tubing worked for your 3.6L exhaust too? the increased radius is probably freer flowing if it fit.
i think fister uses 1.75" instead of 1.25". i will probably go with the 1.75" size, but i just wanted to make sure on the radius. thanks.
here are some links for the 1.75" version of the above with a 6" radius.

if you get the hack done, i would love to stop by and hear it, not to mention meet a local RL guy.
Your material links are for steel. Needs to be this.

I don't know if my guys have a plasma cutter though for making the holes. I will find and send you a PM.
Would be good to meet a fellow RL as well. Maybe you can show me where you AutoX.
304 stainless tubing is overkill, since the muffler is made from 400 series find a top notch exhaust shop and they'll be able to bend a stainless bypass pipe.
It is a cheap DIY if you have the welding experience... Unless you are skilled at tig welding, material selection and weld prep... Have the pros do it.
this is one of those deal like moving a giant piece of equipment into your building....you can think and theorize and plot out every move and what things will be needed, how to get here, then there and over here....until you are blue in the face
then the crew from the tranfer company shows up - look like a bunch of idiots, all they have is scraps of wood and duct tape.... and before you know it the machine is in place while you stand there thinking DAMN ! that was slick, I would have never thought of that
the guys that fabricate metal and pipe will knock this out so quick you wont have time to do much but hand them an extra $20 and say you'll send your friends over
I have the inlet to outlet aka stg2 mod with 1.5 connecting pipe done at local shop....still wasn't loud enough...called Fister and got his which is 1.75 SS....it sounds just right
Pay the two dollars. (Translation from an old vaudeville routine: Have Darin Fister do it). It will be done correctly and save you a lot of running around. My two cents.
If I had to redo it all over, I think I'll send the muffler to Fister, nothing beats a job well done by someone who knows what he is doing.
You can probably do it locally but why going through the probability of a dirty job.
I know it sucks to ship those heavy mufflers if you are not local
+1 on Darin. It's affordable, he's a total Porsche enthusiast and it is one of the cheapest things you can do to your car with probably the biggest smile factor.
Update: finally got it done. my local shop was able to bend a 1.75" 14G stainless steel tube and weld it on. they did MIG welding as opposed to TIG welding, but it looks fine. they also took the mufflers off and reversed the two bolts for me. happy with their service.
as for the sound, i'm a little disappointed. its about 10% louder than stock. at least the wife will be happy. i'll be more happy when spring comes and i can put my bypass pipes on for autox.
10%?
have someone else drive your car - or find a tunnel
for me the hack was significantly louder outside but not so much inside...in fact I often couldnt tell much differance just cruising about - then would hit some enclosed area and go - HOLY CRAP, those sound nice!
both me and my new muffler guy agree that it sounded louder outside than in.
i probably am just having a difficult time adjusting to sound without straight pipes which I had on my DD RX-8 for 3 yrs.
