While I'm waiting for the tires to come in, gives me time to replace the passenger door lock mechanism which has a bad microswitch, and replace my oil pressure sensor which occasionaly gives off the heart-stopping 'failure indicator' warning.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The rear end noise is driving me crazy. I'm 90% sure that it's tires...but I want to be sure. I want to put a hydraulic jack under the back of the car and lift the rear end in the air and spin the wheels. I want to look for wheel play and any sort of resistance. I don't want to put the jack in a place that will harm the engine or trans. Where do I put it? Any pix would be appreciated. The weather is finally above freezing here today so I want to check it out today. Thanks a lot.

POST 2Original post

is this car 4 wheel drive??? You cant do that. If you are planning on putting one jack under the center , you cant do that. It wont work. if its 2 wheel drive you need to jack both sides and put jack stands under both rear sides.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's why I'm asking thank you. It's a 2 wheel drive car. I can jack up each side seperately and use jack stands. Where do I put the jack? Where do I put the jack stands? I don't want to damage anything?

POST 4Original post

You really don't need to lift it up. If its the tires as you suspect can't you feel the amount of tread you have? Are you down to the wear bars? My rears get really noisy at the end of the Summer. Go through a set of rears each Summer (March to November)..

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 8276980

Do you see a solid block of metal behind the oil pan? Use that as a jack point to get the wheels off the ground. The car has 2 jack points on each side of the car (driver / passenger). Feel under the sills and you can feel a round hole. One behind the front tire and one in front of the rear tire. Use the stands at the rear location.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This may sound like a stupid question, but what are wear bars?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do you have a picture of the solid block of metal behind the oil pan? I don't want to make a mistake.

POST 8Original post

There are a few threads about this subject with pics. Do a search "jack up" and you will find a few. There is a solid cross member (you cannot miss it) behind the oil pan you will use to lift the entire rear of the car to place the jack stands. Sorry I don't know how to do the link feature for another thread. GL

POST 9Original post

This is one of many "how too" posts. It will show you where the 4 jack points are located (2 per side). You can use the front jack point lift the entire side of the car then slide a jack stand under the rear jack point. Repeat on the other side. how to jack up a p-car "Wear bars" are the rubber strips between the treads, running across the tire (side to side). When the tire tread wears down to near the "wear bars" it is time to replace the tires.

POST 11Original post

Get a piece of 2x12 about 12" long and put it on top of the jack. Then you can put the jack under the oil pan and it will spread the weight out to the edges when you jack the car up. I have done this more times than I can count on my car without any damage. Jacking from the engine does put pressure on the engines mounts which some say can lead to the mounts failing.

POST 12Original post

I have to admit Doug, I'm a little surprised personally I always jacked by the cross member - in order to reach it I would back onto some staggered wood planks or side jack at rear jack point high enough to get my other jack into the cross member... several reasons I dont like jacking by the motor, but many people have done it many times......

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here are the wear bars, I would suffice it to say, I need new rear tires. Is this the cross member you're referring to? I think I'm too fraidy scared to jack up the car by the rear. I think after looking at these wear bars, my noise is 100% tires.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah and they are noisey ***** f'ers. They are BF Goodrich g-force. The tire rack survey says that they tend to be loud anyway. Hers's a gustion. The fronts are in great shape. Do I just get two rears (which tend to be noisey) or should I get 4 Sumi's or Hankooks? Cash is very tight...

POST 16Original post

Porsche tires wear 2:1 (rears:front) dont know prices but you can figure if your fronts are 50% they will last another set of rears - so do you want to go that route or swap out all 4 and then buy new rears when the fronts are 50% again you have to figure the costs accociated with each choice

POST 17Original post

Go for the cheaper Sumis......better value. If you get rears to match your fronts than the next will be the fronts you replace. Its a nasty cycle thing. Make a clean break.....from one who is also on a budget.

POST 18Original post

for ~ $650 and be done... the Sumis are what I went with too... just feels good to have all new rubber - that circle of questioning the rubber isnt good 0- but depending on your budget... you might have to choose the way the works for you

POST 19Original post

Also look at the DOT code on the front tires to see how old they are. If 5yrs old or more another reason to get all 4 replaced http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=11

POST 20Original post

POST 22Original post

my moto is to use the cheapest tires simply because they all wear out so fast. If you were racing for elapsed time, you may shave off some seconds with better softer compound tires But for driving the car to work, you need mileage. So buy cheap ones and you can afford to buy another set in a couple years. try tire-easy.com

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 8277560

What tires do you run?

POST 24Original post

You can also use the front jack point to raise the car high enough to put a jack stand on the rear jack point. Repeat this procedure on the other side. I looked at tire-easy.com There wasn't a single tire there that I couldn't find cheaper somewhere else!

POST 25Original post

Ive never found any where cheaper than tire easy, if you know better ones list them out for us. I have Falken now but Ive used nexen and hankook. they have all been very good

POST 27Original post

Tirerack.com is cheaper than tire-easy.com on todays prices.

POST 28Original post

I drove into the garage last Wednesdy night and found my driver-side rear tire flat. The inside had worn a lot more than the outside, which I guess is normal for these cars, and blown out. Not sure how far I drove on the flat tire maybe as much as a mile. Amazing how well the car handles with a flat at low speed. Hopefully my wheel is undamaged. So I went online and was going to order Bridgestones from tire-rack but before I did I located the nearest shop to do the install. The local shop had the same tires for the same price with free shipping and reduced cost to mount and balance than what was quoted from Tire Rack. I went ahead and ordered them through the local shop which makes me feel bad for Tire Rack because they seem to be such a great outfit to work with, sorry. I decided to order all four tires because my fronts are getting pretty worn, and now I will have all 4 tires be of the same brand and type which will allow me to go to the track now. While I'm waiting for the tires to come in, gives me time to replace the passenger door lock mechanism which has a bad microswitch, and replace my oil pressure sensor which occasionaly gives off the heart-stopping 'failure indicator' warning. I'm eager to see how the car handles with new rubber.

POST 29Original post

Here's the best method to fully jack up a 996/7 without a proper hoist. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...-securely.html

POST 30Original post

Once you replace the tires, you won't believe the ride difference! I thought I needed major suspension work and couldn't hear my radio any more. New set of tires fixed that. I got the Sumis also. However, if only changing the rear, don't mix brands. It's tacky and won't ride well.

POST 31Original post

I cannot raise the rear wheels off the ground by using the front jack points. I can raise the fronts off the ground by using the rear jack points but not vice-versa.. I used the crossmember in the rear to put it up on stands..

Yeah, I'm going for the Sumi's. Thanks for everyones input, much appreciated!
