To get rid of floating front at speed I installed PSS-9 on 996 and added wheel spacers for vanity (18 inch wheels).

I am another owner of a 996 which I bought used like most of you.

And I don't think my dislike for a car makes me poor or new money or in any way correlates to me being an ignorant cocky new Porsche owner, although I see how the words I chose to use may make me seem that way, but that's how I talk with my friends when we are talking about cars and crap....so sorry for thinking of you guys as my friends.

Why does everyone compare the Porsche and the miata?? I don't think they are comparable at all!! The miata is a slow *** fugally looking piece of crap. What's the deal??.
These car's aren't in the same class. It's like comparing Dom Perignon to Sprite and asking why people think they taste similar. I doubt anyone would choose to drive a Miata over a 911, but not everyone has the financial means to drive the Porsche. Miata = cheap.
i think what people are trying to say, is a car for much cheaper can still give a good amount of thrills as a weekend car and a track car as a porche can...and some of these miatas modded out and tuned properly are really fast...i also hear that that the gear shifter is amazing!! test drove one for fun about 3 years ago...it was fun alright, good enough to make you smile
I was reading a Motor Trend article comparing 10 "true" sports cars eg. R8, GT500, Aston, Porsche, and the ever popular Miata. The 15 or so points the article was comparing was mostly about track performance, steering, and acceleration. The Mazda was below the fleets average significantly for 14 out of the 15 points, yet it scored 2nd place. Porsche was first
. I would have to turn in my man card if I owned a Miata.

For all-out performance, no contest. But if you're thinking about fun/buck or performance/buck (including purchase price, maintenance, insurance, depreciation) -- then it's a different conversation.
I don't agree that faster is more fun. You can have a lower powered car on narrow tires and have a great time. In a tight autocross, a (real) Mini Cooper S can wipe a 911 off the pavement.
one guy comes to the P-car autocross with a gen one stripped down to the bone... that little sucker is fast as all get out!
still - I think the OP was talking about people in line at the gas station or local hamberger stand... like others said...never heard it, and if I did,... big deal - some poeple just like to talk and have no clue, whatever...
like when giving a new person a ride and they are shocked its not quieter and more comfortable for "that much money"
Never driven a Miata with no intentions of doing so. They look like fun at autoX events. Is the spec turbo the 200HP version? To me Porsche is the only way to go and there is no need to compare.
Miata = Outrun by a dog. Nuff said.
On another note, It appears one of my close-by neighbors has purchased a brand new 2010 Carerra in black, and man that thing is SEXY!
Part of it comes down to why you own the car....because of the way it drives? Because of how you think others think of you?
I always like to try to impress people with a 7 year old small car based on a VW bug that I bought used. Ah-h-h-h, the high life.
I've never been able to understand the differences in prices of things anyway. How can a small rock (diamond) cost a lot more than a car or house that involved a lot more of people's lives to create. And don't tell me that the diamond is rare. I can walk out to my yard, pick up any rock, and it's the only one just like it in the world. We buy into these stupid fantasies. Ugh.
Nevery mind. Going back to cave.
I own both. Miata is my daily driver to work or the beach less than 5 miles.
When people ask "what do you drive in the winter"? I say my Porsche C4.
Porsche is a Miata on steroids. IMHO
I don't ever see anyone compare the 996 to the Miata. The Boxster and the Miata, maybe.
I do indeed often choose to drive my Miata over my Porsche on a regular basis. I do not own a Miata because I cannot afford a Porsche.
The stock Miata shifter does indeed make the stock 996 shifter feel like you're shifting a pickup truck.
I'd have to turn my man card in if I refused to drive one of the purest production sports cars still made because of machismo.
Wow, that's actually the saddest argument I've seen yet.
It's apples and oranges but the Miata has nothing to be ashamed about. It's remarkable how much more lively a car can feel when it weighs a thousand pounds less the alternative in question.
It's way more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the people making the comments have never driven a Miata. My 996 is the family truckster--more of a GT car than a sports car. My Miata is an honest-to-god sports car.
Maybe I've been coming across a bunch of porsche mists posts from tooloud10?? I'd rather have a mini Cooper than a miata any day But hell I'd rather drive my road bike than a miata.
I like the go cartish size of the miata. Last time I saw one at a light I thought it sure was nice and small. The miata would have to have a better suspension and power to be good for the road. Not sure if they still use wankel engines but those engines could wind and bang gears all day on an old friends car. Just can't see the standard version on the track the way the video racing a dog showed it dipping on a dirt track.
All in all the jibberish about miata's you get is probably a distorted childish way to extort a test drive of your car.
One of the scariest yet exciting rides I've ever been a part of was in a spec Miata. The car cornered literally like a go kart and had more than enough power to get anyone's pulse going.
It may not have the reputation or the mystique associated with a Porsche but on the track they are a force to be reckoned with. Granted most never see the track and that might be why they have a soft reputation, but then again most Porsches don't see the track either.
I think in the right environment comparing a Porsche and a Miata is a valid argument.
K6 GSX-R1000 here
I'm selling the harley 1200 pro street screaming eagle sportster since its all noise and no go.
They are right about it being a screaming eagle.
Great for going in circles making noise screaming.
Has anyone noticed the correlation between:
Price of porsches decreasing
&
Ignorance, as well as cockiness of first time owners increasing
... Hmm, something to think about. The more you brag, the less you probably have. Plus, I bet you've never even tracked you car. When you do, then you can talk.
____________________________________
+996! It's okay to love your car. I love my 996 for all the engineering put into it, the way it drives, what it stands for, etc. but I do not consider it an exotic nor something to brag about. There is just way too many dumbasses getting into Porsche ownership lately who act like they're Bill Gates when in reality the only reason they are now owners is because of the huuuge dip in prices nowadays.
You can not just go into your backyard & pick up a rock that contains diamonds in it though. It costs millions of dollars to even BEGIN to mine diamonds, look it up. Plus the fact that the conditions under which diamonds were formed are no longer active in the earth's crust means that the day we get the last diamond, it's over, no more. Also, the properties of it make it special, because it refracts light with more intensity than any other material in the world... Now, saying all this, I will however agree that they are over-appreciated due to the monopoly-like way in which the diamond mining industry works & they have the power to price them however they choose, but even if it was a more open business with more competition, the prices would still be very high, just less so than they are now.
Totally agree. Thanks for making a statement that actually makes sense in this thread rather than another post saying "'cause PorscheZ is coolers 'cause like look at the badge" like most everyone else.
Hahahahaha, couldn't have said it better myself.
Because if you track your car, you then have the right to dislike a Miata? Sounds like you're bragging about having track experience.
What does Porsche prices decreasing have to do with anything? Did that open the door so ignorant poor people could drive Porsches?
Ignorant First Time Owner
Edit: Nothing like a good heathy discussion
If you can't get fun putting any model miata through it's paces then you aren't a very capable driver and should turn in your Porsche, especially if the only reason you bought it is "style."
Because if you track your car, then you'll truly appreciate it's pros/cons. You can't put down another sports car when you don't even know what your OWN car is capable of & are judging solely by the badge & magical ***** extension powers you think it gives you.
As for your second question, well quite frankly, yes. Not that there's anything wrong with being poor, but someone who was never before able to afford something such as a Porsche, & all of a sudden can is normally going to be more arrogant than someone who has always had real money, because it's normal to them. It's like give a poor person 100 million dollars & they're probably going to show off & make very stupid decisions with that money, where as someone who already has money is most likely going to know what to do with it & act normal about it. But don't take my comment the wrong way, I am not putting down "ignorant poor people" as you called them, especially since I in no way consider myself wealthy. I am another owner of a 996 which I bought used like most of you. I just know how to see things the way they are regardless of my circumstances. I am also not saying that all new owners are like this, but the main poster of this thread & a few of the ones that agreed with him & made stupid comments are clear examples of this, such as this stupid post:
However a clear example of the contrary is the poster of another new thread in the 996 section who is introducing himself & his new to him C4S. Look at the way he talks about himself & his car in a humble, educated manner & then compare it to some of the opinions posted on this thread. These are all new owners, but obviously do not carry themselves in the same manner.
It's interesting how almost everyone that's encountered a Miata at the track, or has driven one extensively or otherwise actually experienced the car, is perfectly willing to credit the Miata as a capable, genuine sports car...the ones that don't have any experience with them dismiss them as a secretary's car.
I am a long time lurker (well over a year) but now I cannot resist this topic and here is my first post.
I owned over 20 cars so far, all European except four and got my first P car in Jan '09; it is 2002 C2 and I really like it a lot but I would not be able to decide if this is the most fun car to drive I ever owned or my 1991 Miata would be the winner.
To get rid of floating front at speed I installed PSS-9 on 996 and added wheel spacers for vanity (18 inch wheels). Otherwise it is totally stock. Great car.
Miata suspension needed modifications too; GAB adjustable shocks and better springs, Centerforce clutch, smaller Momo steering wheel (no airbags there yet and no power steering of course), proper wheels and tires, even the best shifter on the planet was still improved with Japanese short shift kit, no CAT, ignition timing and air intake slightly modified, shocks brace, spare tire removed and together with some cosmetic improvements it was a really fantastic car to drive.
In many aspects it was better then 996, in others not. It handled and shifted better for sure, straight road speed and awe factor not so good obviously.
But the value for money impossible to beat and it is surely the most missed car I ever had.
In the context of the track: Miatas are cheap and fun to drive. It takes a different skill set to really wring out a Miata (as compared to a rear engine Porsche).
But, regardless of what platform you chose, getting 100% out of the car (or close to it) is equally rewarding. Although ultimate lap times may be slower in a Miata, it is just as exciting getting there.

I put an engine in my neighbors 1994 Miata. I'd heard how fun to drive they are for years so was anxious to drive it a bit after the swap. It is an auto so I can't speak to the shifting. It is a fun little car that reminds me alot of my old 914 in the go kart handling, ride, power mix. My major issue with it was that at 6'2" I can't sit straight up in the thing with the top up. I can imagine in capable hands at an autocross that it would be spectacular.
Cheers,
Geoff
Well, since you put it that way....I will now succumb to the knowledge of the wealthier, "real money", new car buyers who track their car on a regular basis.
They know their cars so well that they can like and dislike what they want. I have seen the light. Dont fret, Im going to my room. Hell, I dont even own a 996, what am I doin in here anyway? Arent them thangs expensive? Emdog, good luck with your car, I hope you can hang on to it, with your poor money managemnt skills and all.
MIATAS SUCK!!
Miatas are great cars. In fact, I have yet to see a Porsche beat one in an autocross.
In fact, I am considering buying a Miata or 1995 M3 as my track car.
I've seen plenty of really great handling Miatas out there on canyon roads, including one driven by this young guy who tagged along with about 100 of us in our Porsches. He wiped just about all of us off the map with the amazing speed he carried through the corners. It looked like awesome fun. Granted, he had some suspension mods and R-compound tires on it, but I was blown away by how tossable his car was.
I am impressed by these little cars.
And Bob, I have seen plenty of well sorted old and new Porsches easily beat Miatas at the autocrosses we have here every month. I'm guessing it's because we have a fairly fast course and the Miatas, while great in the corners, lose out in the fairly long straights we have between those corners.
Oops. Sorry for the way I worded my post. I don't like miatas but that wasn't the point of my post. I was just wondering how the two are even compared, because I hear it from people all the time. I was curious if they think the miata looks like a porsche, has similar capabilities, or??? Because I don't ever see anyone thinking about getting a Porsche and saying hmmm I think I'll get a miata instead, unless maybe they r choosing between a new miata and a old Porsche. I like my 6 series BMW, my rover, my 63 nova but I don't think these are comparable to a Porsche either...and I'm sure no one here would compare these to a Porsche either so it just makes me curious as to why a miata is comparable.
Ps sorry for the horrible grammar and spelling but I am drunk and typing this on my apple iPad because I am better than all you Microsoft pc owners...why do people compare apple and Microsoft anyways?? JK!
The fact that you actually own an iPad speaks volumes.
As an American I don't care for Japanese automobiles for many reasons, but I still drive one for day to day reliability because I think American car's are garbage.
Miata's are gay.
Thank You
I'm actually an Apple computer junkie, but considering the information I have on where I iPad is headed, I choose to wait.
On a side note, every dime I make is with an Apple computer. (<- not entirely true) I use Microsoft PC's for accounting and billing.
Incidentallly, I'm drinking Stella right now and loving the bubbly gas effect. *hiccup*
Does having a baby mean I have to sell my Porsche? *hopes not*, if so I'm ready to check out. I disclosed this bit of information to my baby's future mother and she actually "get's it". I'm a lucky man, but it ain't all luck! hehe..
I dream of building the perfect car... No idea why, but it's a Porsche. I think the movies "Weird Science", and "Risky Business" play a major factor in this fantasy. One of my favorite memories as a teen was when a friend "borrowed" (aka stole) his girlfriend's fathers late 80's brand new model 944 Turbo and took us on the wildest ride of our lives.
I knew right then that I had to have a Porsche. (25 years ago) I plan on leaving my unborn son a badass collection of street machines, just because.
P.S. - The Lamborgini Gallardo is my dream car. (If you haven't gone to a Lambo dealership and BS'ed your way into a test drive of this car you owe it to yourself to do so. Drive your 911 to the dealership and they will practically throw the keys at you). Sorry Stuggart but that car is incredible. I WILL own one before I depart this earth. Dare to dream.
Granted,I think it would be fairer to compare a Boxster and Miata, since they are both girl cars.
But seriously, I've seen the damage a well driven Miata can do. They are very fast and nimble cars. I get my *** handed to me at our local autocross events by those little bastards. Granted, our lot is smallish and I don't get a chance to get my C4 up to it's purported top speed of 177 which surely would leave the Miata far, far behind.
Moreover, driving a Miata is a lot of fun. But, so is riding a moped and having sex with a fat girl. You just don't want your friends to see you doing it.
Slow waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down. Sex with a fat girl??????? I know you guys in Louisville have a great time on a Saturday night but that is just crazy talk. Moped, fast mower, miata, 356, 914, 928, 944, any 911, boxster, cayman, anything with wheels and I am there. My first choice is still a Porsche though.
You seem hung up on thinking that the badge on the front of the car determines how good it is. The cars are apples and oranges, but some of us are just as likely to consider a Miata purchase as a Porsche or anything else. In fact, I'm shopping for a new car right now and I can't decide if I want to trade in my Miata on another one, my 996 C4 for a 996TT or 997S, or keep both of them and get a Lotus. I'm leaning towards the Lotus but haven't dismissed the Miata because of any juvenile attitude that others might have about the car.
I've found that the people that make jokes about my driving a Miata aren't my friends at all.
That said, it is rich to hear Miata jokes coming from a 996 Cab driver--look around, those cars have reputations as being girls cars, too.
Well, as much as I like to ruffle feathers, I think we all can agree that agree that just about any car can be a blast to drive at its limit. Hell, even a smart car can beat a ferrari with a few parts.

Wow, a comparison I can finally contribute to, having owned both... but you're right - I bought the Miata for my wife as her first convertible ever... it was a choice between that and the brand new (at the time) Honda S2000. While gathering the resources to buy my first Pcar I had the Mazda Tribute (I think they make the best value cars of all the Japanese marques...) She loved the thing and I don't think she ever put the top up; beautiful looking car too in Forest Green and what Porsche would call Savannah interior. Well she did manage to drive it in a SoCal rain and the traffic scared the crap out of her - never drove it again and we ended up switching cars... So I had the Miata for about a year... It did feel like girl's car, didn't quite fit my frame and with the top up I practically had to fold myself in (not unlike my first experience riding in a Lotus Elise...) And, if you read the owner's manual, payload shouldn't exceed 450 lbs... which is probably why it sucked so much when my brother and I would joyride in it (both of us push 240...)
Not to knock the Miata, because it was fun (when you're alone)... but I bought my Cab for specific reasons - I've always dreamed of having a Porsche and a Miata, no matter how tightly you close you eyes, will be a Miata whether you open your eyes or not... (just like in the 80s when I had my red Fiat Spyder - when I opened my eyes, it wasn't the Ferrari that Tubbs and Crockett ran around in...)
Would I drive a Miata again? Sure, but my wife would be the one owning it...
My $0.015
Rudy
I'm sure miata would be fun, similar to my MG miget years ago. I did note that miata was very good when I started auto-X. Better gearing. On the track p-car much more fun and faster. I saw a quote recently ( roughly) "it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow". Pick your poison.
That video of the Smart car is so freakin hilarious I almosted spit beer at my computer. Somewhere in cyberworld on some Ferrari board there is some poor shmuck getting beatin down by his Ferrari buds!
Anybody thinking of trading their 996 for a miata
It's a car. It's not a porsche. I imagine plenty of miata owners would love to have a porsche instead. Well maybe not if costs and reading ims threads grabs their fancy of thinking.
If I didn't already own one? I sure might--driving my Miata is much more of a raw sports car experience, kind of like what the 993 and earlier guys are always talking about. I probably wouldn't own a 996 C4 if I didn't also have a "real" sports car in the garage.
Porsches are just cars, too. 996s and Miatas both have their pros and cons and since the Miata seems like the car on trial here, I'll go so far as to point out that there are some things that Porsche could learn from Mazda on sports car production.
Compared it what way? More sold? Cost? Performance? Looks? Color? Options? etc. etc. I also think there were plenty of answers.
In any event, this thread is already a collosal mess of information, and then you have to go trolling for more BS! lol.

I've seen the recommended oil being in the 30's and look at it as a way for manufacturers to get your car in the shop sooner.
Porsche owners for sure don't do much for out of standard modifying. You can turbo a 1300cc hybusa to 700hp. I'd get a kick out of somebody mating two hybusa engines together and installng them in a 911. 1400hp with 14000rpms? Say your prayers before turning the key because you aren't going to have a chance after opening it up pretty much like my gsx-r1000 running 170hp on a 400 lb bike. Life sucks not being able to outrun anything on the street. I'm sure there are some that could catch me.
Situation is being handled ever time driven.
Wait till Ivangene gets back from his self imposed rest.
