Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

From the pic of you car it appears to be a 7.5" wheel by the amount the tire sticks out and hence I suspect those wheels were swapped on the car at some time.
Leading evidence: 'Replace on the car at some time' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'those wheels were swapped' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill front arches more' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Rim change from 7.5 to 8 was as much aesthetic as anything else to fill the front arches more.

Suggestion
Strongly recommend 285/30x18 on the rear, if your geo is good you'll easily notice the difference

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought the pictured wheels for my 2002 about a year ago.
They came with conti sport contact 2s of which the rears are due to be replaced. The size is currently 265/35R18 but Im told the correct size for an 02 is 285/30R18 - any input on this? which size should I go with? or does it make little difference?
I dont track (hope to possibly do an HPDE or autox this summer).
Also, the fronts are more then fine - would be a shame to toss them, Im thinking of getting hankook v12 for the rears (or possibly Summi HTRZ3's). What are your thoughts on mixing brands front to back?
thanks
I was in the same exact situation last week. My rear conti's were toast, and the fronts were fine (typical for our cars). Because the conti's are a bit pricey, my decision was to get 4 new Hancooks. For the week that I have had them, I am very happy. They have been very good in the rain and are extremely quiet (especially when compared to old worn out conti's).
My advice is NOT to mix tire brands (and ages). If you don't want to buy 2 rear conti's, get 4 new ones.

First, starting in 2002 for 18" Carreras 285/30-18 is the correct size. Porsche increased the rear tire size to a 285 on the same 10" wheel due to different suspension tuning. They also increase the front wheel width from 7.5" to 10".
The real question is if those are the original wheels for that car? Those look like the older Sport Design wheels from the early 996's. What is your front wheel width? From the pic of you car it appears to be a 7.5" wheel by the amount the tire sticks out and hence I suspect those wheels were swapped on the car at some time.
For a tire buying decision, since you are not trying to get the car certified and aren't looking at N spec tires, I don't think it matters for which size you go with. Unless yout know the driving characteristis of the tires you are looking at very well, I would not recommend mixing manufacturers or tire models front to rear. This is a safety issue if you drive the car hard. In the rain, if the front and rear tires have different skid characteristics then it could cause an unsafe extreme understeer or oversteer condition.
the front tires are 225/40-18. These wheels came form a 2001 996 cab.
I guess I'll get set of 4 and put the 2 fronts on the FS section..
A bit confused here: The front tire size didnt change from 01 to 02 but the wheel grew .5". On the other hand, the rear wheels didnt change but the tires got wider?
thanks
Yep, the numbers around the valve stem should be 8-52 on the front and 10-65 (width-offset) on the rear.
Rim change from 7.5 to 8 was as much aesthetic as anything else to fill the front arches more.
Strongly recommend 285/30x18 on the rear, if your geo is good you'll easily notice the difference
I have the same stock rims on my 2002 996 with 285/30R18 Summi HTRZ3's. The 285s are too small to protect the rims, I will be puting on 295s to give the rims some more tire.
285/30R18 Summi HTRZ3's
Chris, what did you have before the sumis? how do you like them vs the prev tires?
I read that the hankooks are better in the wet then the sumis - what was your wet condition impression with the sumis? thanks
2000 996 had BFGoodrich...did not like.
2000 996 had Michelin Rib...loved them but priced high.
2002 996 only Summi HTRZ3's ... great tires felt ok in ran. Driven mostly on dry days.
Gota, that was the plan before I realized that my beloved 996 is basically worthless (based on some threads on this forum and the ridiculous offers I have been getting)
