Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use b&m' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace shifter mechanism' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. The shifter feels like a rifle bolt by comparison to the original, and with the **** I use the total stack height is significantly lower, and to my eyes more sporty.

Suggestion
There are 2 basic types of SSK: 1) console/in car - replaces the shifter mechanism under the center console.

Suggestion
Also, keep in mind that the shifter **** is also a lever, so if you switch to a **** with a set screw which allows you to effectively lengthen or shorten the lever shaft it will also effect the shifting.

Suggestion
I have the B+M that fits under the car, when you install it, you may have to grind (notch) out part of the plate (had to do it to mine) the shifter might hit part of the plate (into the 2nd and 4th gear), but other than that I love it, you get to use your existing shifter with a choice of 2 different throw rates, depending on where you set it underneath.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I use the B&M, which is identical to the OEM kit. Can't comment on other designs, but I've been really, really happy with this mod. One of the best I've made. The shifter feels like a rifle bolt by comparison to the original, and with the **** I use the total stack height is significantly lower, and to my eyes more sporty.
The B&M is sold by a Rennlist sponsor at an excellent price, and I'm told it's an easy DIY.
I love my B&M, it is the one that fits in the shift module in the dash (model 45135). They also make an under the car kit. However some people have been favoring the OEM 997 shifter or the GT3 shifter which is said to be smoother and less notchy.
I love my B&M too. It was a touch "notchy" at first, but now is totally smooth. An absolute must (along with an exhaust) for every 996.
A very good friend let me borrow his 997 for the weekend, and while the shifts were better than the 996 linkage - they were still WAY to long and ambiguous for my liking.
SSK is a subjective touchy feely kind of thing. It's a change in mechanical leverage and the trade off is shorter shift throws with slightly more effort, stiffness (especially when cold) and notchiness. Only you can decide if it's right for you.
Also, keep in mind that the shifter **** is also a lever, so if you switch to a **** with a set screw which allows you to effectively lengthen or shorten the lever shaft it will also effect the shifting.
There are 2 basic types of SSK: 1) console/in car - replaces the shifter mechanism under the center console. e.g. B&M, Porsche (might be manufactured by B&M for Porsche). Not adjustable.
2) transmission mounted/undercar - is a plate which attaches to the transmission under the car e.g. B&M, 9FF, Ruf. Has 3 different shift reduction settings.
My $0.02 is to ask and see if there is somebody in your area who will let your drive their SSK equipped car for comparison.
Was thinking the same thing!
Ferd, lately we seem to be thinking alike. If it is me thinking like you.... that's OK. However, if it is you thinking like me.... be afraid.... be very afraid!
Anyone use a SSK in cold climates? I keep seeing disclaimers that shifting is difficult in cold weather.
[And none of this "ooh, it's 50F" and it's cold stuff. I am thinking Minnesota type of cold.

B+M "console" style in my '99 C4 in Colorado. On cold days, it is a little stiff until it warms up, but not a problem in any way. I like it much better than stock in summer and winter diving. It was my first "mod."
