Watched Test Drive last week with Tommy Kendal when he had the panamera on.

We decided to test drive the new Panamera S while we were there.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I went to pick up my car the other day at the dealership. I had a friend take me over in his Audi S8 (yes, the one with the Lambo V10).
We decided to test drive the new Panamera S while we were there.
Holy ****, this car is the real deal.
Three things really stood out for me;
First, the handling. It really does feel like a sports car. The S8 is no slouch to drive, but it feels like a heavy pig compared to the Panamera S. The Panamera is a riot to drive, it even feels like it would be a blast to take to the track.
Second, the sound. Close your eyes and think ALMS GT2 Corvette and that's what it sounds like. A fantastic V8 roar with great volume (it's about as loud inside as my 996 with PSE).
Third, the interior. It's simply stunning. Pictures don't do it justice, I was very impressed. The center console that looks busy in pictures is actually fairly well laid out and easy to use.
The rest;
The looks. It looks much better in person than photo's and the car has a definate presence in when you are around it. It's not an absolute stunner, but it's not bad.
The power. No question it's fast. Probably not as fast in a straight line as my 996 C2 or the V10 S8 but it's not far off.
The room. 4 seats only. Plenty of room for tall peeps in back, but total space is way down from a Big Benz S Class or even the SWB Audi S8.
The trunk. Bigger than I expected, it has a lot of very useful space in back.
The tranny. The PDK is pretty amazing. It it by far the fastest shifting auto that I have ever driven, and the perfect rev matched downshifts are very cool. That being said I'd still prefer to row my of gears (too bad they are not bringing the manual to the US).
Bottom line. Do yourself a favor and go for a test drive before you pass final judgement on this car.
I'll post some pics later....
(Cool your jets Tim)
+1 Saw one in person and the pictures just dont do it - I was WAY more impressed with it that I thought I would be
(till I saw it cost as much as an 09' GT3 plus a nice second car for getting the groceries
)
I had the chance to see it in person at the local "launch party" - I too, was pretty blown away by its presence. The interior is really incredible... and the a$$... well it looks better in person.
Now coming up with the 180K for the Turbo...

ENGINE
The Panamera is powered by a 4.8-liter direct injection V-8 that develops 400 hp in naturally aspirated for, and 500 hp with the help of a pair of turbochargers. An evolution of the engine that powers the Cayenne SUV, it features an aluminum block with closed deck construction and a dry sump. The dry sump oil reservoir is located within the engine to save space and weight. The aluminum heads have dual overhead camshafts actuating four valves per cylinder. The intake cam features Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at pressures of up to 1740psi, and the cooling effect of the fuel on the combustion allows a compression ratio of 12.5:1 in the naturally aspirated version, and 10.5:1 in the turbocharged variant. The Turbo engine's twin turbochargers are fed via a common air cleaner and two intercoolers, one for each cylinder bank, and deliver up to 12 psi of boost at 2500 rpm at sea level. The naturally aspirated engine develops 400 hp at 6500 rpm, and 369 lb-ft of torque between 3500 rpm and 5000 rpm. The Turbo engine develops 500 hp at 6000 rpm, and 516 lb-ft of torque between 2250 rpm and 4000 rpm. Porsche claims 0-60 mph times of 5.2 sec for the Panamera S, 4.8 sec for the 4S, and 4.0 sec for the Turbo.
Ray, nice review, I haven't had the chance to drive this car. I will be honest, I am a detractor, I don't like the rear quarter; however, as having stated I felt the same way about the Cayenne. I guess the handling of the car and it's power-plant will probably change my mind.
This is the questionable part..... Porsche sez that the 996 is an integrated dry sump... its more like an oil pan that is baffled. Usually, dry sumps have the oil reservoir located outside of the engine. Sounds like its a wet sump system to me...
Russo, I've driven multiple Cayenne's. While it's a nice SUV and it handles much better than most SUV's, it's not a "game changer" in my opinion. I'm not knocking it, but it just doesn't blow me away.
This car is (a game changer). It is so far beyond the typical sedan it's not even close. The term "4 door sports car" is totally over played by multiple manufacturers, but is the first "sedan" I've ever driven that can live up to that claim.
Take one for a spin and let me know what you think.
nice to hear a first hand account. Watched Test Drive last week with Tommy Kendal when he had the panamera on. Had me believing but was skeptical, seemed kinda over hyped, but what a car it seemed.
yeah i thought i put my snarky "sounds like what they said about the m96" comment into my post, but hey how many sustained g's are you pulling in a panamera I guess.
OT but did you go to an accusump when you did the S/C?
I had the chance to sit in one a couple week ago. Besides a couple lines at the rear of the car that I don't care for it is really nice.
The thing that amazed me is the longitudinal room on the inside. I'm 6'5". I had a 6'4" friend sit in the driver's seat, adjust it to his driving position, and I sat directly behind him. I still had knee room and my head wasn't hitting the headliner. Pretty amazing.
no, no accusump here.... I was just trying to get a feel if porsche went all out and and put a motorsport derived engine in there.... I dont think oil starvations are an issues with these engines... just curious.
I drove one last Saturday, I have to admit.. it's a blast. Feels much lighter and more nimble than it looks, it's a big car for sure.
Needs a 6 sp. manual option in the US...
Haven't seen one in person yet. I'm hopeful you guys are right about the rear looking better in person, because I haven't seen a picture yet where it looks good.
I'm all for it. I don't think I would buy one for quite a while considering how well developed the alternatives are (and I just bought an '09 5 series 9 months ago), but I hope they sell a ton of them. The more Porsches the merrier, since. After all, the best thing about the Cayenne is that they are everywhere and they always let me cut in line in the bumper to bumper traffic out here.
Ha, good one, but it's true I think.
I went to the Newport Beach dealer launch last Saturday, very nice, and I dig the Burmester sound system too, nice little $4k option from Berlin.
I'm also going with a buddy to a Driving Experience event at Fontana on Sat, Nov 7, at 9am, but who's counting?
I got dibs on the Turbo!
Wait until you pull up beside someone in the turbo and hit the manual setting for lowering the car and popping out the rear spoiler and then look over at the faces! The guy from Porsche Canada - Laurence says it gets a lot of heads turning when he does it. I love the way the spoiler moves as it pops up and then lengthens. I see a mod for the base and 4S guys wanting the spoiler as well.
