I've seen where people have used Petrosin CHF 11S or CHG 202 as a substitute to the Porsche branded fluid.
Leading evidence: 'Use petrosin chf 11s or chg 202 as a substitute' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'manufacturer's number' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fluid level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The part that's broken appears to be part of a larger assembly so there was no Porsche part number on it, just something that was probably the manufacturer's number.

I'll use an endoscope to see if can check the fluid level.

Is there an easy way to check the hydraulic fluid?

But, from the PET schematics, i didn't see any other switches related to that part and the last time I replaced the cover on a friends 996.1 i don't recall any switches there..My old (very) version of PET shows it as part 996.561.465.00, but that number certainly could have been superseded.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2000 C2 Cab. A couple of months ago my top was working intermittently. Then it lost the "inter" part and was just mittent. The Durametric error code was "1. Switch position implausible". The windows would come down, the hook unlatch, the sides would go down and the clamshell would raise, but the top wouldn't move. Out of frustration I pushed up on the top and giving it a slight nudge made it open as usual. I've been able to reproduce that scenario. I'm guessing the implausible switch is underneath the latch cover. Does anyone know what I should look for?
There is a plastic cover for the latch which adds just enough length to push a micro switch when the top is closed. It cues the windows to go up as well. The cover is fragile and breaks.
The latch looks fine. The top opened slowly after giving it a nudge. I put it in service position and nothing looks out of the ordinary. There is no sign of leaked hydraulic fluid. Now it's struggling to open or close.Closing the roof, it barely moves until it gets about half way.
Under the hydraulic pump there is a plastic reservoir with min and max marks. It gets filled through the screw in the middle between the two lines that run to each ram.
Also, the fault for "Switch position implausible" could be either the microswitches for the rear section flaps, left and right or the microswitch in the top latch. This is from the Bentley Manual.
I didn't look under the pump except to check for leaks. It's not easy working in that area with all of the obstacles. I'll take a closer look tomorrow. Now I'm leaning toward fluid or a dying motor since it seems to be struggling. On another note, that little plastic flap that covers the rear hook is broken. I think it just protects the canvas top from the hook. I Googled the part number (
PTL 4010-PPT20-SW)
and the only things to be found are other people trying to find a replacement. I may have to try to design and 3D print one as a last resort, but that's a moot point if the roof doesn't work.
When you mentioned "under the latch cover" in your first post, were you referring the the latch in the front by the windshield or the latch in the top storage area? PET doesn't show any switch parts under the cover in either location.
In your 996.1 there is a plastic "cover " over the latch in the storage compartment to protect the top. With that cover missing the latch can/will snag the center of your top as it folds. But, from the PET schematics, i didn't see any other switches related to that part and the last time I replaced the cover on a friends 996.1 i don't recall any switches there..My old (very) version of PET shows it as part 996.561.465.00, but that number certainly could have been superseded.
I would check on hydraulic fluid. If it gets low the top will be slow opening and closing. That could be triggering some error code because something isn't opening properly. Gotta get down into the "guts" to see the fluid level that 996-Cab posted about. The rams can be rebuilt, don't know about the motors.
PET shows two microswitches associated with the lateral flaps, and some potentiometers with with folding top base. A microswitch 996.561.165.00 is associated with the hydraulics mechanism. That could also be at fault.

Yes, I was referring to the front latch in my original post, That part number doesn't show up as the part I'm looking for, which is as you described - the storage area latch cover, I don't think it would be the lateral flap switches as giving the top a nudge probably wouldn't help in that case. I'll use an endoscope to see if can check the fluid level.
You can see the fluid level pretty easily, as I recall. Been a few years since I poked around back there just getting acquainted with stuff, cleaning the drains. I remember checking the fluid level. So it had to be easy or I wouldn't have done it. I'll look at my shop manual.
I did fine another microswitch by the motor, part number in my previous post.
Bingo! the fluid level is below minimum. I just found a DIY on Renntech. I've seen where people have used Petrosin CHF 11S or CHG 202 as a substitute to the Porsche branded fluid. Even John Deere fluid, so I guess just about any hydraulic fluid will do
My Bentley manual only references Porsche part 000--0430204-80, so you can google alternatives or call dealer, but Renntech is a great source. The manual also has some info on bleeding the system. It's self bleeding but if you think the fluid was low enough to introduce air in the system you should bleed so the top opens properly and doesn't break or bend anything.
Also has some error code definitions. Check your PM's.

Thanks for all of your help. The roof is working now after topping up the fluid. What a PITA it is removing and replacing the filler bolt. Now I'm in the process of repairing the plastic shield that covers the back latch. It's definitely unobtainium. And another issue popped up. There are too levers on the sides, maybe for the flaps. I seem to have lost one of the tiny clips that hold it in place on one side. It probably came off while I was pulling out the fabric cover. I'll open everything up again tomorrow to see if I can find it, but it is tiny and lots of place it could have gone. Would anyone know what that clip is called or what I can use as a substitute. I just crimped a piece of wire around it as a temporary fix.
Glad the fluid was the cause, pretty simple fix, if you have double-jointed fingers . But, theres probably a small slow leak somewhere.
I was able to get a plastic cover a few years ago for a friend's .1 from the local dealer. It's not even in the dealers "classic catalogue"any more? Big bummer. Not sure about the clips, best I can suggest is to try to find it on the parts diagram, or maybe take one to local hardware or auto parts store to find something similar. Be careful with wire so it doesn't poke holes in the roof fabric.
Thanks again. I wasn't aware of that catalog. Pelican Parts has both items. The part that's broken appears to be part of a larger assembly so there was no Porsche part number on it, just something that was probably the manufacturer's number. I should have everything all set to go right before I put on the hardtop.
For anyone else looking for the same parts here are the part numbers:
Lining (Plastic flap assembly) 996 561 265 01
Safety Clip 999 166 054 01
Well, on the remaining sunny days ahead you can still put the top down and enjoy the wind in your hair. I just enjoy the wind now
Although we are mile high here with some winter show days, we still get enough top down driving days if the heater is working well. And can always drive down the Phoenix area.
Thanks, this is just the part I needed. My top would no longer go down all the way, stopped a couple inches short. And yes, the windows did not go up. I looked around and found the "lid" portion of this assembly laying on the deck and it had piece of plastic broken off. This will definitely do the trick and seems to be an easy DYI. I love this board.
