They're a great engine. Just a more mature version of what you have in the 996s. I would imagine they are nearly a form-fit-function Remove and Replace job. But, if I were to go through all that effort, I would just go with the 997S engine--3.8 litre with 355PS.

A 997 3.6L engine will fit into a 2002 to 2005 996 3.6L with a few small changes. 1. You will need to use the 996 3.6L engine harness. 2. Have to dill the left front intake manifold and mount the brake booster line coupler. 3. You need to use the crank case vent hose that comes off the right cylinder head (2003 996 on vent hose) 4. Remove secondary air pump from under left side intake. 5. Install oil dip stick from 996. If you have a 996 3.4L it has to have drive by wire throttle body. It can be done with cable throttle body but very costly to do. 1. Use 3.4L wiring harness & you will need to build a separate interface harness for the Vero Cam Plus. 2. After my engine died eralier this summer, I tried many options including a 997 engine because they were on sale - "cheap," (less than $7k). Here is a summary of my "options." https://rennlist.com/forums/6783642-post59.html Rook and GMG have done it several times. In my summary above I list the different styles for completing this type of project. IMHO Rook's concept made more sense since it would be easier to maintain.
