I installed a flux capacitor in my brain, which probably explains why I'm back in 2004.
Install flux-capacitor in it and ended up back in 2004

Phil, I think that in addition to never driving your car, you must have installed a flux-capacitor in it and ended up back in 2004 for pricing...

Looks clean, no plugs for body work, paint fresh for 2002, wheels free of rash.

Suggestion
The car also has Vosstek aluminum pedals and the inspecting dealer thinks that it has an stronger after-market clutch, given the stiffness and pedal effort required for the clutch (the clutch on the Boxster loaner that I had while they were doing the PPI work seemed almost effortless/flimsy as did the shifter though the shifter throw was markedly longer).

Suggestion
Only issues noted were slight noise from idle rollers for serpentine belt (no immediate need to fix -- estimate $440 to replace) and recommendation to flush and renew brake fluid.

Suggestion
If you hang out here more, I think next time around, you will be able to do the main maintenance items yourself like the oil change, brake fluid change or belt replacement.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Friend is looking at a 2002 C4S coupe with 46K miles. PSM, Nav, full leather, bilsteins, short shifter, 6 cd setup. Looks clean, no plugs for body work, paint fresh for 2002, wheels free of rash. Seller asking $35K. What is a good price to buy?
I would say 28K to 31K. Most C4S on Autotrader are listed in the 29K to 40K+ range, depending on mileage. Those are asking prices so actual selling price will, in most, cases be lower.
You might also want to post this same question on the 996 Forum, where you'll reach more guys that are closer to the 996 cars.
I installed a flux capacitor in my brain, which probably explains why I'm back in 2004. Funny, but since I had that done, I can tolerate flux in the stock market better than I could before.
I'm looking at some C4S's in the same year range. Many sellers are out tune with their asking prices. Mid to high 40's.
28K is not doable but mid 30's seems to be the place when they start to move. I would shoot for 34K.
From the 993 board. $39K for a 56K miles '03 turbo. I'd buy this turbo according to your price appraisals of the C4S.

Friend bought it for $32.5 from guy who works in the car biz. Funny thing is I drove it and loved the PSS9 setup-better than my setup after I engage PASM. Oh well. The PPI results were excellent with one repair for about $400 necessary. Great buy.
I thought this was good (at the time):

2002 C4S, Speed Yellow with SY by the shifter and armrest, SY on the backs of the seats.
"Window Sticker" of $53,999
Sold for $48,000
Miles: 33,000
CPO - Yes (2 years or 100K - basically I've got 2 years)
I can't look back. I just took it out today after not driving it since early December (temps in the mid 40's-mid 30's now). I'll wash it tomorrow. If I look back, I could have bought an F430 based on the devaluation of my portfolio (I keep trying to say that to myself - devaluation, it's not a loss - at least not yet!)
i just bought a 2002 C4S wiht 60k for 10K + 1996 993 (60k mi)
just for your info.
it is well worth the 30-35k. it is so far better than the 993, it is as if they are not even the same league.

I bought my 2002 C4S with 39k miles and the mods you see in my sig for $35k one month ago. It did end up needing ~$1400 in work (front diff seal, front suspension noise, passenger window regulator) of which the PO constributed $200. I think with a better PPI, I could have offered a little less. Still I am quite happy with the purchase.
I am the buyer (02 C4S with 46M miles) first p-car -- came from previous M-B background (current DD is an early AMG car). Car is Arctic Silver with black interior, and still has new leather smell.
Did a full PPI at local dealer ($520) with paint gauge, compression and leakdown. Only issues noted were slight noise from idle rollers for serpentine belt (no immediate need to fix -- estimate $440 to replace) and recommendation to flush and renew brake fluid. I had these items and an oil change done by the dealer about 10 days after I bought the car (total $790).
Compression values were 260 - 268 psi [3 at 260 psi, 2 at 265 psi and 1 at 268 psi] (vs specs of 265 psi plus or minus 10 psi); leakdown was 0 - 3% [1 of 0%, 4 of 2% and 1 of 3%] (vs specs of 0 - 8%).
Options included PCM with navigation, advanced technic package (litronic lights with washers, 6-CD changer and 12-speaker upgraded Bose stereo), supple leather, heated seats, sunroof, self-dim mirrors and rain sensor, footwell lighting and full dark wood (3-spoke steering wheel, shift ****, emergency brake, center console, instrument surround, door pulls and door pocket covers), as well as C4S items such as 4WD, wide body, on-board computer, full leather, PSM, etc.
Prior dealer service records showed regular maintenance (flushing and renewal of fluids and 4-year airbag maintenance) and dealer-installed short-throw shifter ($700), PSS9 suspension ($3,800), GT3 adjustable sway bars with AP adjustable links ($1,200) and suspension adjustment, corner balance and alignment to GT3 RS specs ($350), as well as RMS replacement and coolant hose replacement. The service records also show a tech inspection for DE event and a tech inspection for track.
The seller was asking $35.75M and I countered with $32M (based on what real cash buyers in this market were thinking offers should be at pricing which would hold up 2 - 3 months from now) we settled on $32.5M, which I think is a fair price even in this unsettled market, particular given the options and extras. All-in cost with PPI, fixing the PPI items and oil change is thus $33.8M for a completely no-issues 02 C4S.
I particularly wanted the full wood (appreciating that others may prefer carbon fiber or plain leather), supple leather and the suspension/shifter. Arctic Silver happened to be my top color choice, but would have preferred lighter gray interior to contrast with dark wood, tho black is OK. Would have preferred adaptable sports seats, but comfort seats are OK.
Had toyed with idea of getting a 996 GT2 or turbo, but figured that I would probably kill myself (esp with GT2), so C4S seemed best fit. Happy with car and handling only issue is suspension (which is on lowest setting) requires sideways crab approach to curbs, speed bumps, etc. Ride is rough in city, but fine on good roads.
Hope this is not too much detail, but thought some may find it of interest.

Great looking and "clean" car, congrat! WOW you got a good deal too. If you hang out here more, I think next time around, you will be able to do the main maintenance items yourself like the oil change, brake fluid change or belt replacement. I was not really a DIY'er until I joined this forum and learned so much from the experts. Love your unique looking Alu pedals, looks like they are optimized for "heel-toe" shifting, here you go, welcome aboard... Cheers,
Thanks -- unlikely I would try to DYI anything -- worthwhile to have the security that a real professional has done it right (plus don't have tools or garage workspace).
I just bought one.
$9k plus 96 993.
had 64k mi with a very clean PPI. \
GREAT car. once you go 4S, you wont go back!!!
$35kk is about right ASK. get a PPI and go from there.
if you like the car, what difference does a few hundred mean? a set of tires will set you back 2K
let us know what happens.

How well preserved is the 996? I recently found a 2003 C4S with 30K miles that was amazingly kept - couldn't find a nick or scratch and it still smelled new! Seemed to have never left the garage. A PPI from Brumos showed "perfect." I didn't buy it after intense, month-long negotiating and patience on my part, because seller wouldn't come below 40K. I spent many hours researching the apporpriate price for this car: about 37.5K. So, if the car your friend is considering happens to be in pristine (all but perfect) shape, it is probably worth about 36K. If it is less than perfect, but still excellent condition, you should be able to get it for 34-35K. Many of the cars on autotrader or other listings have "hidden" problems in my experience. I am cautious about using the average cost of a vehicle on autotrader and using that as a guide. If one is a very careful shopper and always gets PPIs, autotrader estimates invariably come in low.
Best of luck -
